Chapter 7: The Brother’s Secret

The room changed when Garrett read the final line.

Not because Penny was missing.

We already knew that.

Not because Victor Hale had taken her.

We already feared that.

The change came from one name.

One word.

One accusation.

*Brother.*

Garrett slowly lowered the paper.

His eyes moved toward Elias.

And for the first time since I had met him, I saw something in Garrett Thorne’s face that wasn’t anger, grief, or fear.

It was betrayal.

“Explain.””

Elias didn’t move.

The storm outside battered the windows, but the sound felt distant.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“Garrett,” Elias said quietly.

“No.””

Garrett’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Do not say my name like you still have the right.””

Elias looked away.

That was all it took.

I knew.

Whatever Victor meant, whatever secret was buried between these two men, Elias knew something.

Something he had hidden.

I stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter?””

Elias looked at me.

Pain crossed his face.

“I don’t know.””

“That is not enough.””

My voice shook.

“But I swear to you—”

“You swear?””

The anger came before I could stop it.

“You stood in this house and watched me learn that my daughter might be connected to a family I never knew existed.””

I pointed toward the door.

“And now she is gone.””

My hands trembled.

“I need more than promises.””

Elias lowered his head.

“You’re right.””

Garrett stared at him.

“Tell me what you know.””

For several seconds, Elias said nothing.

Then he walked toward the fireplace.

The same place where Penny had stood earlier.

The same place where everything had begun falling apart.

“Victor is right about one thing.””

Garrett’s face hardened.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Elias looked at him.

“Clara did not leave because she was afraid of you.””

The room went still.

Garrett didn’t blink.

“What did you say?””

Elias swallowed.

“She left because she was afraid of what would happen if you found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Elias looked at me.

Then back at Garrett.

“The truth about me.””

A cold feeling settled in my chest.

Garrett’s voice dropped.

“Elias.””

“I was there that night.””

The words struck like thunder.

Garrett took one step forward.

“What night?””

“The night Clara left.””

Nobody spoke.

“You told me she disappeared,” Garrett said.

“I lied.””

The confession hung in the room.

Garrett looked like he had been hit.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elias closed his eyes.

“Because Clara asked me to.””

That stopped him.

Even Garrett had no immediate answer.

“Clara asked you?””

Elias nodded.

“She came to me before she left.””

The fire cracked.

“She was scared.””

Garrett’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Of me?””

Elias hesitated.

“No.””

The answer hurt more.

“She was scared of what Victor would do if he discovered Penny existed.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t she tell Garrett?””

Elias looked at him.

“Because Victor was watching everyone close to Garrett.””

A memory crossed his face.

“Clara believed the safest place for Penny was somewhere nobody would look.””

Garrett’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why did she tell you?””

“Because she trusted me.””

A painful silence followed.

Garrett laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the truth hurt.

“My wife trusted my brother more than she trusted me.””

Elias looked away.

“You gave her a reason.””

The words were quiet.

But brutal.

Garrett turned.

“You knew she was leaving.””

“Yes.””

“You helped her.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe she abandoned me.””

Elias’s voice broke.

“I thought I was protecting her.””

Garrett stepped closer.

“You thought?””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

Garrett shook his head.

“You made a choice.””

“Yes.””

“You took my child away.””

Elias flinched.

“No.””

Garrett’s eyes burned.

“You knew Penny existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew where she was.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I knew Clara had placed her somewhere safe. I didn’t know the name. I didn’t know the town.””

Garrett stared at him.

“Then how did Victor find her?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question that mattered.

The question hanging over all of us.

How had Victor discovered a secret hidden for three years?

Then Elias slowly looked at Garrett.

And I saw fear return to his face.

“No.””

Garrett noticed.

“What?””

Elias stepped back.

“No.””

“What is it?””

Elias looked toward the broken wooden horse on the floor.

Then toward the door.

“He didn’t find Penny.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Elias whispered:

“He found the person who knew where she was.””

Garrett’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Elias looked at me.

And my heart stopped.

“Thomas Miller.””

I felt the room tilt.

“No.””

The word left my mouth immediately.

Impossible.

My husband was dead.

Thomas had been gone for over a year.

I had held his hand when the fever took him.

I had buried him.

I had watched the life leave his eyes.

“He’s dead,” I said.

Elias looked troubled.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

He hesitated.

Garrett’s voice turned dangerous.

“Explain.””

Elias ran a hand over his face.

“When Clara left, she needed someone she trusted. Someone who could hide Penny without anyone connecting her to Garrett.””

My breathing became shallow.

“No.””

Elias looked at me.

“Thomas knew.””

The room became silent.

Every memory I had of my husband suddenly felt different.

Thomas holding Penny.

Thomas smiling when she took her first steps.

Thomas telling everyone she was his.

No.

My mind rejected it.

“He loved her.””

“I believe he did.””

“Then why?””

Elias looked down.

“Because Thomas knew Victor would never stop searching.””

I shook my head.

“You’re saying my husband lied to me?””

Elias didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

Garrett looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something besides his own pain.

He saw mine.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

The words almost made me angry.

Sorry was too small.

Sorry couldn’t bring back years of truth.

Sorry couldn’t erase the fact that everyone around me seemed to know something about my daughter except me.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed distance.

But before I reached the door, a sound stopped me.

A horse.

Outside.

Everyone froze.

Garrett moved toward the window.

A rider was approaching through the snow.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Not hiding.

Garrett reached for his gun.

“Stay here.””

I ignored him.

Of course I did.

The rider stopped at the front gate.

Then a voice called out.

“Garrett Thorne!””

Everyone recognized it.

Victor.

Garrett stepped outside.

I followed.

The snow whipped around us.

Victor sat on his horse, completely calm.

“Where is my daughter?”” Garrett demanded.

Victor smiled.

“Interesting.””

He looked past Garrett.

At me.

“You still don’t know, do you?””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

Victor’s smile widened.

“The truth about Thomas Miller.””

Garrett’s face darkened.

“Enough games.””

Victor ignored him.

“Thomas wasn’t just hiding Clara’s child.””

He leaned forward.

“He was hiding what Clara discovered before she disappeared.””

A silence fell.

“What did she discover?”” I asked.

Victor looked directly at me.

Then he said the words that made Garrett go completely still.

“Your husband was never protecting Penny from me.””

The wind seemed to stop.

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“He was protecting her from Garrett Thorne.””

My blood ran cold.

Garrett stepped forward.

“That is a lie.””

Victor smiled.

“Is it?””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small folded document.

Then threw it into the snow.

“Ask him why Thomas made him promise never to come near Penny.””

Nobody moved.

Garrett stared at the paper.

I stared at Garrett.

And in that moment, I realized something.

There was still one secret left.

May you like

One secret Clara had died protecting.

And Garrett Thorne knew exactly what it was.
