Chapter 9: The Last Letter
I don’t remember leaving the old office building.
I don’t remember walking past Victor.
I don’t remember the drive home.
All I remember is Andre’s voice.
*They found the second letter.*
Those words followed me like a shadow.
By the time I reached my house, police cars were already outside.
Neighbors stood on the sidewalks, whispering.
My front door was open.
The same door where friends had entered carrying birthday gifts two days earlier.
The same door where Danielle had walked out after accusing me of hating her.
Now it stood broken.
Like my family.
Andre ran toward me the moment I stepped out of the car.
“Mom.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Are you okay?””
“Yes.””
“Did they hurt you?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
His face was pale.
“They knew exactly what they were looking for.””
I looked toward the house.
“The letter.””
He nodded.
“They went straight upstairs.””
My heart sank.
“My room.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
That room had held my life.
My memories.
My marriage.
And now someone had invaded it because they believed Michael left behind something worth destroying for.
A police officer approached.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I’m Officer Miller. We’ve secured the home.””
“Did you find whoever did this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Anything missing?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Not much.””
Not much.
Those two words told me everything.
“They didn’t steal jewelry,” Andre said.
The officer nodded.
“They ignored valuables.””
“What did they take?”” I asked.
The officer looked at his notes.
“Documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“Which ones?””
“Family papers. Old letters. Anything stored in your office.””
I looked at Andre.
“They knew.””
He nodded.
“They knew exactly where to look.””
The officer continued.
“Mrs. Carter, did anyone besides your family know about these documents?””
I hesitated.
There was one person.
The person whose signature I had just seen.
The person I had trusted for decades.
But saying her name felt impossible.
“Eleanor,” I whispered.
Andre looked at me.
“You think Eleanor did this?””
“I don’t know.””
But I did know one thing.
Someone had spent years protecting this secret.
And now someone was desperate to keep it buried.
After the police left, I walked upstairs alone.
Andre followed.
The damage was limited.
But somehow that made it worse.
The room was not destroyed.
It was searched.
Carefully.
Professionally.
The drawers were open.
The boxes were moved.
The closet emptied.
Someone had not come to cause chaos.
They came with a plan.
I stood beside the empty space where I had kept Michael’s letters.
“They took everything?””
Andre looked around.
“Almost.””
I turned.
“Almost?””
He pointed.
Behind the bookshelf.
A small piece of paper was on the floor.
I picked it up.
My hands froze.
It was torn from the second letter.
Only one sentence remained.
*The person you trust may be the person who betrayed you.*
Andre read it.
His expression changed.
“That’s it?””
“That’s all they left.””
“Why?””
I looked at the paper.
“Because they wanted us to see it.””
A message.
Not a mistake.
Someone wanted me afraid.
Someone wanted me suspicious.
Someone wanted me to turn against the people around me.
Then my phone rang.
Eleanor.
I stared at the screen.
Andre saw the name.
“Answer it.””
I did.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then:
“Naomi.””
My heart tightened.
“Eleanor.””
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I looked at Andre.
“You knew someone broke in.””
Another silence.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Her voice became softer.
“Because they came for me too.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Last night.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of who?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer felt impossible.
Eleanor was the person who always had answers.
The person who always knew what was happening.
Now she sounded afraid.
“What did they want?””
“The same thing.””
“The letters?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Eleanor, I saw the photograph.””
Silence.
“The one with Michael and Samuel.””
Another pause.
Then:
“You found Victor.””
“Yes.””
I heard her exhale.
“Then it’s over.””
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?””
“The truth is finally coming out.””
“Tell me the truth yourself.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael made me promise.””
I felt anger rise.
“Michael has been dead for years, Eleanor.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you still protecting him?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I’m protecting you.””
I almost shouted.
“From what?””
A long pause.
Then she said:
“From knowing that Michael knew Danielle’s entire plan.””
I went silent.
“What?””
“Michael knew she was investigating your family.””
“Then why did he let Andre marry her?””
“Because he believed he could stop it.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
Her voice became desperate.
“I don’t know everything, Naomi.””
“Then what do you know?””
She whispered:
“I know Michael met Danielle before Andre introduced her.””
The room spun.
“When?””
“Months before.””
“Why?””
“He wanted to understand why she was asking questions.””
“And?””
“He found out about Victor.””
“And Samuel?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he found something worse.””
I held my breath.
“What?””
Eleanor was quiet.
Then:
“Michael discovered Samuel wasn’t the person behind everything.””
I looked at Andre.
He was listening.
“Who was?””
Eleanor whispered:
“Someone inside your family.””
My heart dropped.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
“Naomi—”
“No.””
I refused to hear it.
Because there were only a few people close enough.
Only a few people who knew our family.
Only a few people who could have betrayed us.
“Who?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
And somehow that was the answer.
“Eleanor.””
“I can’t say it.””
“Why?””
“Because if I’m wrong…”
She stopped.
“If I’m wrong, I destroy someone innocent.””
“And if you’re right?””
Silence.
Then:
“If I’m right, Michael died trying to stop them.””
My hands went cold.
“Michael died?””
I swallowed.
“Are you saying his death wasn’t natural?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
That night, Andre and I sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where my birthday cake had stood.
The same place where everything had begun.
“I need to tell you something,” Andre said.
I looked up.
“What?””
“Danielle called me.””
“When?””
“After the break-in.””
My chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
“She said she knows who took the letters.””
I stared.
“Who?””
“She wouldn’t tell me.””
“Why?””
“She said she would only tell me if I met her.””
I looked toward the dark windows.
“No.””
Andre frowned.
“No?””
“She wants control.””
“But what if she knows something?””
“She does.””
“How do you know?””
“Because everyone involved knows something.””
He was quiet.
Then he said:
“I’m meeting her.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Mom.””
“Absolutely not.””
“I need answers.””
“And she knows that.””
He looked frustrated.
“Then what do we do?””
I looked at the torn piece of paper.
*The person you trust may be the person who betrayed you.*
The words felt different now.
Because I finally understood.
The message wasn’t only a warning.
It was a test.
Someone wanted us to suspect everyone.
But there was one person who had been there from the beginning.
One person who had access.
One person who knew Michael.
One person who knew the letters.
And one person who had always been close enough to protect the secret.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Danielle.
Just one sentence.
*I know who killed Michael.*
Below it was a location.
And another line.
*Come alone if you want the truth.*
Andre looked at me.
“Mom.””
I stared at the message.
At the words.
At the impossible possibility.
Then I whispered:
“She knows.””
“What?””
I looked toward the window.
“The truth everyone has been hiding.””
A second message arrived.
This one with a photograph.
A photograph of Michael.
Taken the day before he died.
And standing beside him…
was Danielle.
But that wasn’t what made my hands shake.
It was the person standing behind them.
The person whose face was partially visible.
The person I trusted for forty years.
The person who had cried with me at Michael’s funeral.
May you like
The person who told me she would protect my family forever.
Eleanor.
