Chapter 8: The Truth About Michael

I held the phone against my ear long after Victor stopped speaking.

The line had gone quiet.

But I didn’t hang up.

I couldn’t.

Because hearing his name had pulled me backward through time.

Thirty years.

Three decades of memories I had carefully arranged and locked away.

Victor Hale.

The man Michael warned me about.

The man I believed had disappeared from our lives forever.

Andre watched me from across the room.

“Mom?””

I finally lowered the phone.

“It was Victor.””

His expression hardened.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised even me.

Because I had spent years pretending that name meant nothing.

But it did.

It meant betrayal.

Fear.

And the last secret my husband carried to his grave.

“Tell me everything,” Andre said.

I looked at the document Danielle had left behind.

The name on the page stared back at me.

A name I had not spoken in decades.

*Samuel Reed.*

Andre noticed my reaction.

“You know him.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

I walked to the window.

The same window where someone had photographed us.

The same window where my husband once stood with a cup of coffee every Sunday morning.

“Samuel was Michael’s closest friend.””

Andre frowned.

“Then why does Danielle have his name?””

I closed my eyes.

“Because Samuel was the reason your father stopped trusting people.””

Andre waited.

He knew better than to interrupt when I was trying to remember something painful.

“When I met Michael, Samuel was already part of his life.””

I smiled faintly.

“They were different people, but they balanced each other.””

“How?””

“Michael was careful. Patient. Quiet.””

“And Samuel?””

I looked down.

“Ambitious.””

That word carried more meaning than it seemed.

“Samuel always wanted more. Bigger companies. More money. More recognition.””

“And Dad?””

“Michael wanted enough.””

Andre nodded.

“That sounds like him.””

“It was.””

I sat down.

“After Andre was born, Michael changed.””

Andre smiled slightly.

“He always said I made him softer.””

“He did.””

Then the smile disappeared.

“But Samuel didn’t understand.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought family was something that got in the way of success.””

The room became quiet.

“And then what happened?””

I looked at the document.

“Michael discovered Samuel had been doing things behind his back.””

“Like Victor’s father?””

I nodded.

“Samuel was connected to several deals.””

“And Dad exposed him?””

“Yes.””

Andre leaned forward.

“But earlier Eleanor said Victor’s father was the one who lost everything.””

“He was.””

“Then why is Samuel involved?””

Because that was the part I never understood.

The part Michael took with him.

“I don’t know.””

Andre looked frustrated.

“But you know something.””

I sighed.

“I know Michael believed Samuel was more dangerous than Victor’s father.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor’s father was angry.””

I looked at him.

“Samuel was patient.””

That sentence stayed between us.

Because everyone understood what patient meant when it came from someone dangerous.

“He waited?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

I looked at the document again.

“I think we’re finding out.””

The next morning, Victor called again.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Why are you contacting me?””

His voice was calm.

Almost polite.

“I wanted to see if Michael told you.””

“Told me what?””

“The truth.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you still don’t know it.””

“You threatened my family.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I warned you.””

“You sent someone to photograph my house.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

That was the first time Victor sounded uncertain.

“I don’t know.””

I believed he was lying.

But I also knew something else.

He was not the only person involved.

“Why did Danielle marry my son?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That told me enough.

“Victor.””

Finally, he said:

“My daughter made mistakes.””

“Your daughter?””

“Danielle.””

“You admit she’s your daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

Another pause.

“Because she wanted to.””

I almost laughed.

“She built an entire marriage on a secret.””

“She loved Andre.””

“Did she?””

Victor’s voice became softer.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

“Then why destroy his life?””

“Because she was trying to prove something.””

“What?””

“That Michael was not the man everyone believed he was.””

I looked at the old document.

“Was he?””

Victor didn’t answer.

And somehow that frightened me more.

“What did my husband do?””

The line went quiet.

Then Victor said:

“Meet me.””

“No.””

“You deserve answers.””

“I don’t trust you.””

“You shouldn’t.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I’m not asking you to trust me.””

“Then what are you asking?””

“To hear the truth from someone who was there.””

“Where?””

He gave me an address.

An old office building downtown.

A place I remembered.

Michael’s old company headquarters.

A place that had been empty for years.

Before I could respond, Victor said:

“One more thing.””

“What?””

“Don’t bring Andre.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because if he learns everything before you do, he may never forgive his father.””

The call ended.

I told Andre I was going.

He immediately said no.

“Absolutely not.””

“I’m going.””

“Mom, this man has been manipulating everyone.””

“I know.””

“Then why meet him?””

“Because he knows something.””

“And you believe him?””

“No.””

That surprised him.

“I believe he has a reason.””

Andre ran a hand through his hair.

“You’re seventy-two years old and still trying to solve everyone’s problems.””

I smiled sadly.

“That sounds like your father.””

He didn’t smile back.

“Mom.””

“I need to know.””

He looked at me.

And I saw the same fear I had seen in his eyes when he was a child.

The fear of losing someone he loved.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor specifically said not to.””

“That’s exactly why I should.””

I shook my head.

“Andre.””

He stopped.

“Your whole life, you have protected me.””

His eyes softened.

“Now let me protect you.””

I reached for his hand.

“You already have.””

After a long silence, he agreed.

But only because I promised to call him every hour.

The old building looked smaller than I remembered.

Time had a way of shrinking places that once seemed powerful.

The lobby was empty.

Dust covered the corners.

The walls held faded signs from a company that no longer existed.

Victor was waiting.

Older than I remembered.

His hair was gray now.

His face carried years of anger.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Focused.

He looked at me.

“Naomi.””

“Victor.””

He glanced at the empty hallway.

“Michael never wanted you here.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Then why am I?””

“Because he’s gone.””

“And you think that gives you permission?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“It gives me responsibility.””

That surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

Victor walked toward an old conference room.

Inside was a single box.

He opened it.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

Letters.

He removed one folder.

Then handed it to me.

I opened it.

The first page was a financial report.

The second was a legal document.

The third was a photograph.

My hands went cold.

It was Michael.

Young.

Standing beside Samuel Reed.

And beside them…

was a woman.

A woman I knew.

A woman I never expected to see.

My breath caught.

“No.””

Victor watched my face.

“You recognize her.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I did.

The woman in the photograph was not a stranger.

She was someone who had sat at my dinner table.

Someone who had held my baby.

Someone who had told me she was my friend.

Victor whispered:

“Samuel wasn’t the only person Michael was trying to expose.””

I looked at the photograph.

The woman’s face stared back at me.

And suddenly every strange moment from the past made sense.

The warnings.

The secrets.

The fear.

“Who is she?”” Victor asked.

But he already knew.

Because he was watching me remember.

I whispered her name.

“Eleanor.””

Victor nodded.

And the world seemed to tilt.

“No,” I said.

“She would never…”

Victor placed another document in front of me.

A document with a signature at the bottom.

Eleanor’s signature.

And below it was a date.

Three months before Michael died.

My hands shook as I read the title.

*Confidential Agreement Regarding the Reed Investigation.*

Victor looked at me.

“The person who has been hiding the truth from you all these years…”

He paused.

“Was the person you trusted most.””

I stared at the signature.

Unable to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Then my phone rang.

Andre.

I answered.

But before I could speak, I heard panic in his voice.

“Mom.””

“What happened?””

“Someone broke into the house.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“And they weren’t looking for money.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What were they looking for?””

Andre’s voice dropped.

“The letters.””

I looked at Victor.

At the documents.

At the secret everyone had been protecting.

May you like

Then Andre whispered:

“Mom… they found the second letter.””
