Chapter 8: The Child Nobody Knew About

The silence after the recording ended was different from every silence before.

The earlier ones had been filled with shock.

Anger.

Betrayal.

But this one was filled with fear.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

There was another secret.

Another life affected by what we had done.

Rodrigo stared at me.

“Isabela.””

I could barely breathe.

“Who was she talking about?””

I looked at Mateo.

Then Sebastián.

Then at the empty space where Camila’s voice had just existed.

For twenty years, I had convinced myself that the past was buried.

But the past was never buried.

It was waiting.

“I don’t know what she meant.””

The moment I said it, I knew nobody believed me.

Especially Rodrigo.

He had spent his life reading people.

And now he was looking at his wife, the woman he had trusted more than anyone, realizing there were still pieces of me he had never known.

“You’re lying.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

I looked at him.

“I’m not.””

“Then why did Camila say you knew?””

I had no answer.

Because I did know.

Not everything.

Not the entire truth.

But enough.

Enough to understand why Camila had been terrified.

Enough to understand why she never forgave me.

The room waited.

Even Octavio was silent.

That frightened me.

Because a man like him never stayed quiet unless he was afraid of what would happen next.

Daniel noticed too.

His confidence was gone.

He looked toward Octavio.

“You didn’t tell me about this.””

Octavio’s eyes narrowed.

“There are things you don’t need to know.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“After everything I did for you?””

Rodrigo looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel suddenly stepped toward Octavio.

“You told me the boy was the only problem.””

Rodrigo’s expression changed.

“The only problem?””

Daniel looked at Mateo.

Then at Sebastián.

His face became serious.

“You really don’t know.””

My heart sank.

Rodrigo turned toward me.

“Know what?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because Daniel was about to say it.

The thing I had spent years fearing.

“The night Camila left,” Daniel said, “she wasn’t only trying to protect Mateo.””

Rodrigo stepped closer.

“What else?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She was trying to protect another child.””

Sebastián went still.

I saw the confusion on his face.

Then the fear.

“No.””

My voice came out immediately.

Everyone looked at me.

I shook my head.

“No. Don’t do this.””

Rodrigo stared.

“Isabela.””

I looked at him.

“Please.””

But he didn’t look away.

Not this time.

Not after everything.

“Tell me.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Sebastián.

Our son.

The child I had protected.

The child I had loved more than anything.

And suddenly I realized something painful.

All these years, I had protected him from the truth.

But I had never asked whether the truth deserved to be hidden.

“Sebastián…”

He stepped back.

“Mom?””

My tears fell.

“I need you to listen.””

His face changed.

Because children always know when something is about to break.

“What is happening?””

I looked at Rodrigo.

Then I said the words I never imagined saying.

“When you were born…”

My voice disappeared.

Rodrigo looked shocked.

“What?””

I continued.

“When you were born, there was a mistake.””

Sebastián stared.

“What kind of mistake?””

I forced myself to continue.

“The hospital records were changed.””

Nobody moved.

Rodrigo whispered:

“Changed?””

I nodded.

“Your father’s family had influence.””

Octavio looked away.

Rodrigo saw it.

And understood.

“Did you know?””

Octavio remained silent.

Rodrigo’s voice became colder.

“Did you know?””

Finally, Octavio answered.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something.

Rodrigo looked like he had been hit.

“You knew about my son too?””

Octavio looked at Sebastián.

“He was always your son.””

“That’s not the point.””

Rodrigo’s anger rose.

“What did you change?””

I closed my eyes.

Because I had to say it.

“The records said Sebastián was born three days before he actually was.””

Rodrigo frowned.

“Why?””

I looked at him.

“Because Camila was in the same hospital.””

A terrible silence followed.

Mateo looked confused.

“My mother?””

I nodded.

“She gave birth the same week.””

Rodrigo stared.

“No.””

His voice became smaller.

“No.””

I looked at Sebastián.

“Camila believed something happened during those days.””

Daniel nodded.

“She was right.””

Rodrigo turned toward him.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at Octavio.

Then finally answered.

“Two babies.””

The words echoed.

“Two mothers.””

My hands shook.

“One family.””

Daniel continued.

“One secret.””

Sebastián’s face became pale.

“Are you saying…”

Nobody wanted to say it.

But the truth had already arrived.

Daniel finished:

“You and Mateo were connected long before tonight.””

Mateo looked at Sebastián.

The two boys stared at each other.

Not as strangers anymore.

But as people whose entire lives had been shaped by a secret they never chose.

Rodrigo looked at me.

“What did Camila think happened?””

I whispered:

“She thought someone changed something at the hospital.””

“Changed what?””

I looked down.

“The babies.””

The room became completely still.

Rodrigo’s expression was impossible to read.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

I wanted to believe that too.

But Camila had spent years searching.

And she had left evidence.

Daniel opened the notebook again.

“There are records.””

Rodrigo looked at him.

“Show me.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed him a page.

Rodrigo read it.

His face changed.

Then he handed it to me.

I looked.

And my heart broke.

Two names.

Two birth times.

Two signatures.

One signature belonged to the doctor who delivered Sebastián.

The other belonged to someone from the Valdez family.

Octavio.

Rodrigo looked at his father.

“You changed my son’s records.””

Octavio finally lost his calm.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Rodrigo’s voice was shaking.

“I understand perfectly.””

Octavio stepped forward.

“I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

Rodrigo laughed sadly.

“You keep saying that.””

He looked around the room.

“At what point did protecting me become destroying everyone?””

Octavio had no answer.

Then Sebastián spoke.

His voice was broken.

“Am I his brother?””

Everyone turned.

Mateo looked at him.

Neither boy knew what to say.

I walked toward Sebastián.

But he stepped back.

That hurt more than any accusation.

“Sebastián…”

“Was my whole life a lie?””

“No.””

I cried.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then what was true?””

The question destroyed me.

Because I knew the answer.

The love was true.

The memories were true.

The family was true.

But the foundation beneath it was cracked.

Before anyone could speak, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion disappeared into darkness.

A second later, glass shattered downstairs.

Rodrigo immediately grabbed Mateo and pushed him behind him.

“Stay here.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“They found us.””

Elena whispered:

“Who?””

Daniel’s face was serious.

“The people who wanted Camila silent.””

A flashlight appeared in the darkness.

Then another.

Footsteps moved through the mansion.

Someone was inside.

Rodrigo looked at me.

“We need to get everyone out.””

But before we could move, a voice came from the hallway.

“Rodrigo Valdez.””

Everyone froze.

A woman stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew her.

I had not seen her in twenty years.

But I knew exactly who she was.

Camila’s older sister.

And she was holding a folder.

She looked directly at Mateo.

Then at me.

And said:

“You have no idea what Camila discovered before she died.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph that made Rodrigo stop breathing.

May you like

Because standing beside Camila in that picture…

was someone who was supposed to have been dead for twenty years.
