Chapter 7: The Truth Camila Took to Her Grave
Nobody spoke after I said those words.
Not Rodrigo.
Not Mateo.
Not Sebastián.
Not even Octavio.
The room that had held so many secrets for so many years suddenly felt too small for the truth waiting inside it.
Rodrigo stared at me.
“The letter was about me?””
I could see the questions fighting inside his eyes.
Confusion.
Fear.
Pain.
He had spent the entire night discovering that his past was not what he believed.
But this was different.
This was not about someone else.
This was about him.
I looked down at my hands.
“I didn’t understand it at first.””
Rodrigo’s voice was low.
“Then explain it now.””
I wanted to.
God, I wanted to.
But some truths are heavy because once they are spoken, they cannot be taken back.
“There were things Camila knew that I didn’t.””
I looked toward the notebook on the desk.
“Things about your family.””
Rodrigo frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Daniel watched me carefully.
Almost like he was waiting for the exact moment when I would break.
But I refused to look at him.
Because I had spent twenty years being afraid of men like him.
No more.
“Camila found financial records.””
Rodrigo looked at the notebook.
“Those?””
I nodded.
“She discovered that your father’s company had been moving money through hidden accounts.””
Octavio’s face changed.
Rodrigo turned toward him.
“Is that true?””
Octavio said nothing.
And once again, silence answered for him.
Rodrigo looked back at me.
“What does that have to do with me?””
I swallowed.
“Camila believed you knew.””
The words hit him.
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I didn’t.””
“I know.””
“But she didn’t?””
I shook my head.
“She thought you were involved.””
Rodrigo stepped back.
“That’s why she left?””
“Partly.””
“What does that mean?””
I looked at the floor.
“Camila wanted to confront you.””
Mateo’s face tightened.
“My mother wanted to talk to him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
Because I was there.
Because I stopped her.
Because I made a choice that changed all of our lives.
“I convinced her not to.””
Rodrigo looked at me.
“Why?””
I closed my eyes.
Because the answer was ugly.
Because I was afraid of losing him.
Because I loved him more than I loved doing the right thing.
“Because I believed your father.””
The room went silent.
Rodrigo’s voice was almost a whisper.
“You believed him over her.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The disappointment in his eyes hurt more than anger.
“I thought he was protecting you.””
I looked at Octavio.
“He told me Camila was trying to destroy your family.””
Octavio’s face remained cold.
“She was unstable.””
Mateo immediately turned toward him.
“Don’t talk about my mother like that.””
Octavio looked at the boy.
For a moment, he seemed ready to respond.
Then he stopped.
Maybe because even he knew there was no excuse anymore.
Rodrigo walked toward the desk.
He picked up the notebook again.
“What did Camila write about me?””
I hesitated.
“She wrote that she didn’t know if you were part of it.””
Rodrigo froze.
“But she wanted to find out.””
“Yes.””
“And you destroyed the letter because…”
I looked at him.
“Because I was afraid of what you would discover.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
I wiped my tears.
“I was afraid that if Camila was right, everything would collapse.””
“What everything?””
“Our marriage.””
He stared.
“You thought I would leave you?””
I didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Rodrigo looked away.
A painful silence passed.
Then Mateo spoke.
“My mother never wanted to hurt you.””
Rodrigo looked at him.
“She wrote that?””
Mateo nodded.
“She said she only wanted the truth.””
Rodrigo closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like twenty years of missing memories had fallen on him at once.
Then Sebastián spoke.
“I don’t understand.””
Everyone turned.
Our son looked at Rodrigo.
“If Grandma and Grandpa did all these things…”
He swallowed.
“Why did we live like nothing happened?””
That question was innocent.
And devastating.
Because children always ask the questions adults spend their lives avoiding.
Rodrigo walked toward him.
“I don’t know.””
It was the first time I had ever heard my husband admit those words.
“I don’t know, Sebastián.””
Daniel suddenly moved toward the desk.
“This is enough.””
Rodrigo immediately noticed.
“Enough for what?””
Daniel grabbed the notebook.
But before he could leave, Rodrigo caught his arm.
The movement was fast.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
“You’re not leaving with anything.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You have no idea what this information can do.””
Rodrigo’s grip tightened.
“I know exactly what it can do.””
He looked at Mateo.
“It can destroy more lives.””
Daniel smiled.
“Your father understood that.””
Rodrigo released him.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he was thinking.
“Why are you still protecting him?””
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Rodrigo stepped closer.
“My father used you.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Rodrigo continued.
“He made you do his dirty work.””
“Careful.””
“No.””
Rodrigo’s voice was calm.
“You spent years believing you were powerful because you scared people.””
Daniel stared.
“But you were just another person my father controlled.””
The words hit their target.
Daniel’s anger appeared immediately.
But before he could respond, a loud sound came from upstairs.
A crash.
Everyone turned.
“Sebastián!””
I ran toward the staircase.
The others followed.
My son was standing beside his bedroom door.
On the floor was a small wooden box.
An old box I had never seen before.
He looked at me.
“I found this under my bed.””
My heart stopped.
Under his bed?
How?
I walked closer.
The box was covered in dust.
But there was something familiar about it.
A symbol carved into the wood.
The same symbol I had seen on Camila’s documents.
Rodrigo picked it up.
“Where did this come from?””
Sebastián shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at the box.
Because I knew.
I knew immediately.
And I felt the fear return.
“Open it,” Rodrigo said.
Nobody moved.
Then Mateo stepped forward.
“My mother used to have one like that.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He nodded.
“She kept it hidden.””
Rodrigo opened the box.
Inside was not money.
Not documents.
Not jewelry.
Only one object.
A small voice recorder.
Old.
Damaged.
But still intact.
Rodrigo looked at me.
“Did you know about this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
For once, I was telling the truth.
He pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice appeared.
A voice none of us expected to hear.
Camila.
Everyone froze.
Her voice was weak.
Like she was recording this while afraid.
“If you are listening to this…”
The room became completely silent.
“…it means Mateo found Rodrigo.””
Mateo covered his mouth.
Rodrigo stepped closer.
Camila continued.
“Rodrigo, I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“I never left because I stopped loving you.””
Rodrigo closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
“I left because I discovered the truth about the night our son was born.””
Everyone froze.
Our son.
The words echoed.
Camila continued.
“And the truth is…”
The recording crackled.
Everyone leaned closer.
Then her voice became clear again.
“Mateo was not the only child whose life was changed by what happened.””
My blood ran cold.
Rodrigo looked at me.
The same fear appeared in his eyes.
Camila’s final words before the recording cut off were:
“Isabela, you know the truth about the other child.””
The recorder stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rodrigo slowly turned toward me.
“Other child?””
I couldn’t answer.
May you like
Because the secret I had buried was even older than Mateo.
And it was the reason Camila had never trusted me again.
