Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside the Investigation

Noah stared at the photograph until his hands went numb.

It was impossible.

The picture showed him sleeping in the hotel room.

The same room where he had spent the night searching through his mother’s notebook.

The same room where Sarah had been sitting only a few feet away.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had been close enough to watch him breathe.

And nobody noticed.

Sarah immediately locked the door.

Reyes called security.

The hallway outside filled with investigators within minutes.

But Noah barely heard them.

His mind was stuck on one thought.

Someone knew he was close.

Someone was afraid of what he would find.

“Who took this?”” Noah asked.

Nobody answered.

Sarah looked at the photograph again.

“The timestamp says it was taken twenty minutes ago.””

Noah looked around the room.

Twenty minutes ago.

He had been asleep.

Sarah had been awake.

Reyes had been downstairs.

The hotel security team claimed nobody entered.

Which meant one thing.

The person who took the photo was either extremely careful…

Or someone had helped them.

Noah looked at Sarah.

“You said my parents trusted you.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Do you still think someone inside the investigation is helping them?””

Her expression tightened.

“I think someone has been helping the wrong people for a very long time.””

The next morning, investigators searched the hotel.

They found no fingerprints.

No cameras had captured anyone entering the room.

No electronic records showed unusual activity.

It was as if the person had never existed.

But Noah noticed something.

A small mark carved into the wooden desk.

A symbol.

The same symbol from his pendant.

He touched it.

Sarah immediately stopped him.

“Don’t.””

Noah looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because whoever left that wanted you to see it.””

“And?””

“And people who leave messages usually want a response.””

Noah looked at the mark.

“Maybe I should respond.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Noah, you’re twelve years old.””

“And my parents disappeared because adults ignored the truth.””

The sentence silenced the room.

Sarah looked away.

Because she knew he was right.

For eight years, people had searched for answers while ignoring the people who had them.

His father.

His mother.

His grandmother.

Even Sarah.

Everyone had protected Noah.

But nobody had trusted him.

Later that day, the team returned to the airport.

They needed answers about Clara Voss.

The mysterious woman connected to Daniel Whitmore’s evidence.

The woman who supposedly did not exist.

Reyes brought new information.

“We found a partial record.””

Sarah looked up.

“From where?””

“A government archive.””

“That shouldn’t exist.””

Reyes nodded.

“Exactly.””

He placed the document on the table.

Clara Voss had worked for a private intelligence company years earlier.

Not officially.

Her name had been removed from every public database.

Noah frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah answered quietly.

“It means she was involved in things people don’t want remembered.””

Reyes continued.

“She specialized in protecting corporate executives during high-risk situations.””

Noah looked at him.

“Like my parents?””

“Possibly.””

Sarah studied the file.

“Why would Daniel need someone like her?””

The answer came from the next page.

A photograph.

Daniel Whitmore.

Laura Whitmore.

Clara Voss.

And another man.

Noah recognized him immediately.

Michael Grant.

But there was something different about the picture.

They weren’t enemies.

They were together.

Smiling.

Working.

Noah looked confused.

“My dad knew her.””

Sarah nodded.

“Apparently.””

“But why would he hide that?””

Nobody knew.

Then Noah noticed a handwritten date beneath the photo.

The date was three months before the disappearance.

And beside it was a note.

*Emergency extraction plan approved.*

Noah looked at Sarah.

“Extraction?””

Sarah’s face changed.

“That’s not a normal word.””

“What does it mean?””

“It means your parents knew they might have to run.””

That night, Sarah received another message.

This time, it wasn’t a photograph.

It was a video.

No sender.

No location.

Just one file.

Everyone gathered around the screen.

Sarah pressed play.

Static.

Then a man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But Noah knew him.

His heart stopped.

“Dad?””

Daniel Whitmore looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then something happened.””

Noah stepped closer.

The video was clearly recorded years earlier.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Not like the confident businessman from newspaper photos.

Like a man who had been running for his life.

“I don’t know who found this message,” Daniel said.

“But if it’s Noah…”

He stopped.

His expression broke.

“If it’s my son, I need you to know something.””

Noah covered his mouth.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother and I never stopped trying to come back.””

A tear fell from Noah’s eye.

“We wanted to tell you the truth. We wanted to explain everything.””

Daniel looked down.

“But we couldn’t.””

The screen flickered.

“The person hunting us wasn’t trying to steal money.””

Sarah leaned closer.

“Then what were they trying to do?””

Daniel continued.

“They were trying to erase evidence.””

The video glitched.

Noah’s heart raced.

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

“Evidence that someone inside the investigation was helping them.””

The screen froze.

Then the video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the meaning.

May you like

The enemy wasn’t just outside.

They were already inside.
