Chapter 7: The Mother Who Came Back from the Dead
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't speak.
He stood beside Ana's stretcher, staring at her as though she had suddenly begun speaking a language he had never heard before.
“Elena is dead,” he said finally.
Ana closed her eyes.
“That's what they wanted you to believe.””
“Who is they?””
“I don't know, Mr. Oleso. I never knew everything. Elena called me six years ago, and I was too frightened to ask the right questions.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the stretcher.
“You spoke to my wife the night she supposedly died, and you never told me?””
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Ana looked up at him, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“Because Celeste told me that if I ever mentioned that phone call, she would make sure Amara disappeared forever.””
Daniel stepped back.
The hallway seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
Detective Brooks, who had been listening from the doorway, moved closer.
“Ana, I need you to tell me exactly what happened that night.””
Ana swallowed.
“I was working the late shift. Elena had gone out that evening, and Mr. Oleso was away on business.
Around eleven, the telephone rang. I answered, expecting it to be the security office.””
“What did you hear?”” Brooks asked.
“A woman crying. At first, I couldn't recognize her voice. Then she said my name.””
Ana's fingers twisted in the blanket.
“She said, 'Ana, listen to me. I'm alive, but you mustn't tell Daniel where I am.''”
Daniel pressed a hand over his mouth.
“What else?””
“She said she had been taken somewhere after the accident. She didn't know where. She said people were telling her that Daniel had abandoned her and that her daughter was better off without her.””
“Did she say who was keeping her there?”” Brooks asked.
“No. The line was breaking up. I heard a man shouting in the background.””
Ana paused, struggling to remember.
“Before the call ended, Elena said something strange. She told me to remember the song she used to sing to Amara.””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“What song?””
“The little frog song. The one about the frog who wanted to become a king.””
He remembered Amara telling him about a woman who had said her mother used to sing when she was scared.
The photograph.
The silver key.
The letter in the storage unit.
Pieces of a puzzle were beginning to fit together, but the picture they formed was more terrifying than anything he had imagined.
“Why didn't you tell me about the call afterward?”” he asked.
Ana's face crumpled.
“Because Celeste came to the kitchen the next morning. She told me the telephone company had given her the recording of the call. She said Elena was dead and that the voice had been a cruel prank.””
Daniel stared at her.
“She had a recording?””
“She played it for me. I heard Elena crying. Then I heard a man's voice saying that if anyone contacted the police, a child would suffer.””
Ana looked at Detective Brooks.
“I thought he meant Amara.””
Brooks made a note.
“Do you still have the recording?””
“No. Celeste took it.””
Daniel began pacing.
Every answer created another question.
Why had Celeste been so determined to keep Elena hidden? Why had Elena contacted Ana rather than him? And if Elena was alive, why had she waited six years to come back?
Most importantly, had she taken Amara?
Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
Detective Brooks immediately raised a hand.
“Don't answer yet.””
She signaled to an officer, who began preparing a tracing procedure.
The phone stopped vibrating.
A message appeared.
Your daughter is with the person who has loved her from the beginning. Stop searching before you destroy what's left of your family.
Daniel read it twice.
Then another message arrived.
Ask Ana what Elena said about the accident.
He turned toward the housekeeper.
Ana went pale.
“What did Elena say?”” he demanded.
Ana looked at Detective Brooks, then back at Daniel.
“She said the accident wasn't an accident.””
Silence fell over the hallway.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Explain.””
“Elena told me she had discovered something about the brakes on her car. She said she'd confronted someone about it. Before she could tell me who, the call ended.””
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Did she mention Celeste?””
“No.””
“Did she mention anyone else?””
Ana shook her head.
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
He remembered the night of Elena's funeral. Celeste had sat beside him in the front pew, holding his hand while he stared at the closed coffin.
She had whispered that he needed to be strong for Amara.
She had told him that Elena would have wanted him to move forward.
Three months later, Celeste had begun managing his household.
Six months after that, she had moved into Elena's bedroom.
A year later, she had married him.
He had mistaken her certainty for strength.
Now he wondered how much of their marriage had been built upon a death she had helped conceal.
“Detective,” he said, “I want the original accident investigated again.””
“That's already underway.””
“And I want every person connected to Elena's medical transfer questioned.””
“We're working on that.””
“Then find Dr. Voss.””
Brooks nodded to one of her officers.
“Get me his current address.””
Daniel looked down at his phone.
A third message appeared.
This one contained an address.
No explanation.
Just a location outside the city.
Beneath it were six words.
Come alone if you want her back.
Daniel showed the detective.
She studied the message.
“This could be a trap.””
“I know.””
“You are not going alone.””
“If they see police, they may move Amara.””
“And if you go alone, they could take you, too.””
Daniel looked at the photograph of his daughter on his phone.
She was smiling, missing one of her front teeth, with a smear of chocolate across her cheek.
He had taken that photograph on her seventh birthday.
He remembered promising her that he would always keep her safe.
“Then we make sure they never see the police,” he said.
Brooks shook her head.
“We're not risking an unplanned confrontation. We'll establish surveillance and coordinate with the local unit.””
Daniel wanted to argue, but he knew she was right.
For once, his anger couldn't be allowed to make the decisions.
While the officers organized the response, Michael came downstairs carrying a laptop.
“I found something in Elena's financial records.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
“An account connected to the old family trust. It was opened six years ago, three days before the accident.””
“By whom?””
Michael rotated the laptop.
The account was registered under the name *E. Mercer*.
Daniel frowned.
“Anna Mercer.””
“Possibly. The account received a substantial transfer from a company owned by Celeste.””
“How much?””
“Nearly two million dollars.””
Daniel stared at the figure.
“Where did it go?””
“Most of it was withdrawn through a series of transactions. But one payment was made to Ashcombe House.””
The facility Evelyn had identified.
Brooks moved closer.
“Can you get the transaction details?””
Michael nodded.
“I'm trying.””
Daniel's phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID displayed a name.
*Evelyn Hart.*
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere safe,” Evelyn whispered.
“Where is my daughter?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you calling me?””
“Because I've been trying to reach you for twenty minutes. The police have been calling me, too. I couldn't answer because someone followed me after I left the storage facility.””
Daniel glanced at Brooks.
“Who?””
“I don't know. A black car. It followed me until I reached a petrol station. When I went inside, it disappeared.””
“Were you wearing a ring?””
Silence.
“Dr. Hart?””
“Yes,” she said finally.
“A silver signet ring. It belonged to my father.””
Daniel looked at Brooks.
She gestured for him to continue.
“Was it on your left hand?””
“Yes. Why?””
“Someone wearing a similar ring entered my house and took my daughter.””
Evelyn's breath caught.
“Oh, God.””
“Tell me what you know.””
“I need you to understand something. The person who took Elena from the hospital was not acting alone. There was a financial arrangement involving a private care organization, and Dr. Voss was responsible for approving the transfer.””
“Was Celeste involved?””
“I believe she arranged the payment. But I never saw her sign the documents.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because she came to my office six months later and asked me to change Elena's records.””
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Change them to what?””
“To indicate that Elena had died.””
Brooks began writing furiously.
“Did you do it?”” Daniel asked.
“No. I refused.””
“What happened?””
“Two weeks later, I received a letter telling me my medical career would be destroyed if I spoke about the transfer. I thought it was an empty threat. Then my supervisor accused me of mishandling confidential records, and I was removed from the case.””
“Why didn't you report it?””
“I tried. The complaint disappeared.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Do you know where Elena is now?””
“No. But I know someone who might.””
“Who?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Dr. Voss.””
Michael looked up from the laptop.
“That's the same man we were trying to find.””
Evelyn continued.
“He left the hospital several years ago. I heard he was working at a private facility outside the city. I don't know if he still is.””
Brooks took the phone from Daniel.
“Dr. Hart, this is Detective Brooks. I need you to come to the station and give a formal statement.””
“I will.””
“And I need you to tell me everything you remember about the night Elena was admitted.””
“I can do that.””
The detective paused.
“One more question. Do you know a woman named Ana Reyes?””
Evelyn was silent for a moment.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know Ana?””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Because Elena told me that if she ever escaped, Ana would be the only person she could trust with her daughter.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at the detective.
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael's laptop chimed.
He had found the transfer records.
“Daniel,” he whispered.
“You need to see this.””
The screen showed a scanned document dated six years earlier.
It was an authorization to transfer Elena to Ashcombe House.
The signature at the bottom was Daniel's.
But beneath it was a second signature, written in smaller letters.
*Witness: Celeste Oleso.*
Daniel stared at the document.
Then he noticed something else.
The authorization had been signed at 8:15 p.m.
The police report stated that Elena's accident occurred at 9:42 p.m.
The transfer had been approved before the accident.
Before Elena was injured.
Before she was taken to the hospital.
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
“This wasn't a cover-up after the accident,” he said.
Brooks looked at the screen.
“No.””
Michael's voice was barely audible.
“They were expecting it.””
Daniel felt the room go cold.
Six years ago, someone had arranged for his wife to be taken to a private facility.
Someone had forged his signature.
Someone had prepared the paperwork before her car left the road.
And tonight, someone had taken his daughter.
The same people might have been involved all along.
Daniel picked up his coat.
“Find Dr. Voss.””
Brooks nodded.
“We will.””
“And if Elena is alive, I want to know where she is before sunrise.””
He turned toward the stairs, where his daughter's laughter still seemed to linger in the empty hallway.
Then his phone vibrated one final time.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
Amara was sitting on a wooden chair in a dimly lit room.
Beside her stood a woman whose face was hidden by shadow.
But one hand rested gently on the child's shoulder.
Daniel recognized the small silver ring on the woman's finger.
May you like
He also recognized the handwriting beneath the photograph.
Tell Daniel his wife is waiting.
