Chapter 6: The Empty Bedroom

Daniel ran.

He barely remembered leaving the storage facility. He remembered Michael shouting for the police, Evelyn following them into the car park, and Celeste screaming something he couldn't understand.

He remembered only the photograph of Amara beside the bedroom window.

And Ana's scream.

“Call the estate security team again!”” he shouted as Michael drove.

“I have. Nobody's answering.””

“Call the police.””

“They're already on their way.””

Daniel pressed Ana's number again.

It rang unanswered.

He tried Amara's room phone, then the main house line, then the mobile number he'd bought for Ana in case of emergencies.

Nothing.

He gripped the door handle so tightly his fingers ached.

“Faster.””

Michael glanced at him.

“Daniel, if we crash, we won't help anyone.””

“My daughter is in that house!””

“I know.””

“No, you don't!””

Michael's hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“I'm trying to get us there alive.””

Daniel turned toward the window.

Streetlights blurred past.

For six years, he had believed that his daughter was safe because he had hired trustworthy people, installed security cameras, and paid for the best locks money could buy.

He had believed that safety was something he could purchase.

Now he understood that a locked door meant nothing if the people inside had been betrayed by the people who were supposed to protect them.

When the estate came into view, the front gate stood open.

One security light was broken.

The guardhouse was empty.

Michael stopped the car at the entrance.

Daniel was out before the engine had fully stopped.

“Amara!””

He ran through the front door.

The hallway lights were on, but the house was silent.

A lamp lay shattered beside the stairs. The front door to the study was open. Papers had been scattered across the floor.

“Ana!””

No answer.

Daniel took the stairs two at a time.

He reached Amara's bedroom and pushed the door open.

The room was empty.

Her blanket lay on the floor.

The stuffed rabbit was beneath the bed.

The little wooden box had been overturned, its contents scattered across the carpet.

Daniel stood motionless.

For one second, he couldn't breathe.

Then he saw a small pink sock near the window.

He picked it up.

“Amara?””

His voice sounded strange.

Too small.

Too distant.

He searched the wardrobe, the bathroom, the space behind the curtains.

Nothing.

Michael appeared in the doorway.

“Daniel?””

Daniel turned toward him.

“She was here.””

“We'll find her.””

“She was here!””

Michael caught his shoulders.

“Look at me. We are going to find her. But we need to establish what happened.””

Daniel pushed past him and ran down the corridor.

He searched every room, calling his daughter's name until his throat burned.

In the nursery, he found a broken picture frame.

In the playroom, he found a chair knocked sideways.

In the kitchen, the stainless steel dog bowl still sat beside the trash.

He picked it up and hurled it into the sink.

The crash echoed through the house.

“I should have protected her,” he whispered.

Michael came up behind him.

“You're going to protect her now.””

Daniel turned.

“How? She's gone!””

“We call the police. We preserve the evidence. We find out who entered the house.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I promised her I would be there when she woke up.””

Michael said nothing.

There was nothing he could say.

A siren sounded outside.

Detective Brooks entered the house with two uniformed officers. She took one look at Daniel's face and immediately called for additional units.

“Mr. Oleso, when did you last see your daughter?””

“About forty minutes ago. She was upstairs with Ana.””

“Did you notice anything unusual before you left?””

“Celeste had disappeared. We found evidence connecting her to my first wife's accident. A doctor contacted me. We went to a storage facility to investigate.””

Brooks's expression tightened.

“You left the estate after receiving a threat involving your daughter?””

Daniel looked at her.

“We didn't know it was a direct threat until we found the photograph.””

“You should have told us immediately.””

“You're right.””

He didn't defend himself.

He didn't have the strength.

Brooks turned to the officers.

“Secure every entrance. Get the security company on the phone. I want the camera recordings from the entire property and neighboring roads. Notify the missing-child unit.””

One officer hurried away.

The detective crouched near the overturned box.

“Was anything taken?””

Daniel looked at the scattered belongings.

“A photograph. A key. A letter.””

“Anything else?””

He shook his head.

Brooks pointed toward the window.

“Was this open when you arrived?””

“Yes.””

She examined the frame.

“There's damage around the latch. Someone may have forced it.””

Daniel stared at the window.

“Why would anyone take Amara?””

The detective stood.

“We don't know yet. It could be connected to your wife's disappearance, the financial investigation, or something else. We need to follow the evidence.””

“Then follow it faster.””

Brooks met his gaze.

“I understand that you're frightened. But I need you to answer my questions accurately, even if the answers are difficult.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Ask.””

“Who knew you would be away from the house tonight?””

“Michael. The house staff. Celeste.””

“Anyone else?””

“Dr. Hart.””

“Did she know your daughter was here?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell her where you were going?””

“No. She met us at the storage facility.””

Brooks made a note.

“Did Celeste have access to the security system?””

“She helped manage the household. She had the codes.””

“Could she disable the cameras?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know Ana was with Amara?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She knew Ana was protective of her.””

The detective looked toward the staircase.

“Then we need to consider whether someone deliberately created an opportunity to remove your daughter.””

Daniel's phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A man's voice replied.

“Your daughter is safe.””

Daniel stopped moving.

“Who is this?””

“Someone who knows where Elena is.””

“Put Amara on the phone.””

“Not yet.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Please. Let me hear her voice.””

There was a pause.

Then he heard a faint sound.

A little girl crying.

“Daddy?””

Daniel nearly collapsed.

“Amara! Sweetheart, I'm here. Can you tell me where you are?””

The man interrupted.

“Don't ask her questions.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“If you hurt her, I will find you.””

“You won't have to. I want something from you.””

“What?””

“The original records from Elena's trust. The documents you found tonight.””

Daniel looked at Detective Brooks.

She immediately signaled to the officers to trace the call.

“The documents are in police custody,” Daniel said.

“Then get them back.””

“I can't.””

The man's voice hardened.

“Your daughter is eight years old, Mr. Oleso. She doesn't understand what those documents mean. She only understands that she wants her father.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Please don't frighten her.””

“Then do what I tell you.””

“What do you want?””

“The original authorization for Elena's transfer, the trust statements, and every letter your mother kept. You have until sunrise.””

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Brooks took it from him.

“Did you recognize the voice?””

“No.””

“What did he ask for?””

Daniel told her.

She exchanged a look with the other officers.

“This is now a suspected kidnapping connected to a financial crime. We'll handle the communication.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He said sunrise.””

“We'll do everything possible to locate her before then.””

“What if we don't?””

Brooks held his gaze.

“Then we keep searching. But you must not make a private exchange without us knowing.””

Daniel looked toward the empty staircase.

“I'm not losing another person I love because I trusted the wrong people.””

He followed Brooks into the study, where officers were already collecting documents.

A short time later, Michael returned from the security office.

“I found something.””

He placed a tablet on the desk.

“The system was disabled at 1:42 a.m. But one of the exterior cameras kept recording because it runs on a separate circuit.””

Brooks took the tablet.

“Show me.””

The footage showed a dark vehicle entering the property through the open gate.

A figure stepped out, dressed in a hooded jacket.

The face was obscured.

The figure walked toward the rear entrance, used a key, and disappeared inside.

Five minutes later, the same figure emerged carrying a small bundle.

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

“Zoom in.””

The image enlarged.

The bundle moved.

A tiny hand emerged from the blanket.

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“That's Amara.””

Brooks paused the recording.

“Can you identify the vehicle?””

Michael shook his head.

“The registration plate is obscured.””

“Can you enhance it?””

“I'll ask the security company.””

Brooks rewound the footage.

The figure turned toward the camera for a fraction of a second.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Something about the person's posture seemed familiar.

The way the shoulders were held.

The slight tilt of the head.

He had seen that walk before.

“Go back,” he said.

Michael rewound the video.

“Stop there.””

The figure's face remained hidden, but the left hand was visible.

A silver ring caught the light.

Daniel leaned closer.

It was a broad signet ring with a small black stone.

He had seen it on someone's hand that evening.

He looked at Michael.

“Did you notice what Evelyn was wearing?””

Michael frowned.

“What?””

“Her hands. Did she wear gloves when we met her?””

“I think so.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“Call her.””

Michael dialed the number.

It rang unanswered.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Brooks immediately called for officers to locate Dr. Evelyn Hart.

Daniel stared at the frozen image.

A terrible thought began to form.

The woman who had claimed to be helping him might have led him away from his daughter.

Or she might have been trying to warn him.

He didn't know which possibility was worse.

Then another officer entered the study.

“Detective, we found the housekeeper.””

Daniel spun around.

“Where?””

“In the pantry. She's alive, but she's been struck on the head. Paramedics are treating her now.””

He ran downstairs.

Ana lay on a stretcher in the hallway, a blanket over her shoulders. Her face was pale, and a bandage had been wrapped around her forehead.

Daniel knelt beside her.

“Ana. Can you hear me?””

Her eyelids fluttered.

“Mr. Oleso?””

“I'm here. Where's Amara?””

Ana tried to sit up.

A paramedic gently held her back.

“Please stay still.””

“Where is she?”” Daniel demanded.

Ana's eyes filled with tears.

“They took her.””

“Who?””

“I don't know. I heard the back door. I went to check, and someone hit me.””

“Did you see the person?””

Ana shook her head, then winced.

“I saw a ring.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What kind of ring?””

“A silver ring. Black stone. On the left hand.””

He glanced toward the study.

The same ring had appeared in the security footage.

“Did you hear anything?””

Ana swallowed.

“The person said something before taking Amara.””

“What?””

Ana's voice trembled.

“They said, 'Tell Elena her daughter is coming home.''”

Daniel stared at her.

“Coming home from where?””

Ana began to cry.

“I don't know, sir. I swear I don't know.””

He held her hand.

“It's all right.””

“No, it isn't.”” Ana's voice cracked.

“I should have protected her. I promised Elena I would.””

Daniel went still.

“Promised Elena?””

Ana looked at him.

For the first time since he'd known her, she seemed to realize she had revealed something she could no longer take back.

“Mr. Oleso, there's something I've never told you.””

“What?””

“Six years ago, the night Elena supposedly died, I received a phone call from her.””

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

“What did she say?””

Ana squeezed his hand.

“She told me she was alive. She told me someone was trying to take Amara away from you. And she made me promise that if she ever came back, I would help her find her daughter.””

Daniel stared at the woman who had raised his child.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Celeste?””

Ana nodded.

Then she whispered the words that shattered the last piece of certainty Daniel had left.

“Mr. Oleso, I don't think Celeste took Amara tonight.””

He stared at her.

“Then who did?””

May you like

Ana looked toward the darkened windows.

“I think Elena came back for her daughter.””
