Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back
Malcolm Reed had spent years believing he understood betrayal.
He thought betrayal came from enemies.
Competitors.
People who wanted what he had.
He never expected it to come from family.
His younger brother, Nathan Reed.
The name alone brought back memories.
Nathan had always been different.
Where Malcolm was disciplined, Nathan was impulsive.
Where Malcolm planned ten steps ahead, Nathan followed whatever felt right in the moment.
Their father used to say:
“Malcolm builds the road. Nathan finds where it leads.””
At the time, Malcolm thought it was a compliment.
Later, he realized it was a warning.
Nathan had left the company fifteen years earlier.
Not because Malcolm pushed him out.
Because Nathan wanted freedom.
Or at least that was what Malcolm believed.
After Emily’s confession, Malcolm sat alone in his office for nearly an hour.
Claire eventually walked in.
“You haven’t moved.””
Malcolm looked up.
“I’m thinking.””
“About Nathan?””
He nodded.
Claire sat across from him.
“Do you believe he did it?””
Malcolm looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“That scares you.””
“Yes.””
She was surprised.
“Why?””
“Because with everyone else, I can separate the person from the action.””
He paused.
“But Nathan…”
“Is family.””
Malcolm nodded.
Before Claire could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
He picked it up.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice.
“You always were slow when it came to family.””
Malcolm closed his eyes.
“Nathan.””
A laugh.
“You sound disappointed.””
“I am.””
“That hurts.””
“Where are you?””
Nathan ignored the question.
“I heard you’ve been investigating.””
Malcolm stood.
“Did you help Adrian?””
Silence.
Then:
“Did Emily tell you that?””
“She did.””
Nathan sighed.
“Poor Emily.””
“What did you do?””
“You really want the truth?””
“Yes.””
Nathan’s voice became colder.
“Fine.””
A pause.
“I helped him.””
Malcolm felt the answer before he heard it.
“Why?””
“Because someone needed to show you the truth.””
Malcolm almost laughed.
“You sabotaged my company to teach me a lesson?””
“No.””
Nathan’s voice sharpened.
“I sabotaged your illusion.””
“What illusion?””
“That you built everything alone.””
The words hit.
Nathan continued.
“You think you’re different from everyone else. You think because you worked harder, everyone around you owes you loyalty.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
Malcolm said nothing.
“You built an empire and forgot the people underneath it.””
Malcolm gripped the phone.
“People like Elliot?””
“Yes.””
“People like Thomas?””
“Yes.””
“People like you?””
Nathan went quiet.
That silence told Malcolm everything.
“You were angry.””
Nathan laughed softly.
“I was invisible.””
The word carried years of resentment.
“I was always Richard Reed’s other son.””
Malcolm closed his eyes.
Their father had always praised Malcolm’s discipline.
Nathan’s failures.
Nathan’s mistakes.
Nathan had carried that resentment.
But Malcolm had never known how deep it went.
“You could have talked to me.””
Nathan laughed.
“You were too busy becoming a legend.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Maybe.””
A pause.
“But it’s true.””
Malcolm walked to the window.
“Where is Adrian?””
Nathan didn’t answer.
“Nathan.””
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
“Then come alone.””
Malcolm froze.
“Where?””
“Old Reed Manufacturing.””
The abandoned factory.
The place where their father built his first business.
The place where everything started.
“Why there?””
Nathan’s voice softened.
“Because that’s where you forgot who you were.””
The call ended.
Claire entered moments later.
She had seen his expression.
“What happened?””
Malcolm looked at her.
“It was Nathan.””
Her face changed.
“What did he say?””
“He wants me to meet him.””
“Alone?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
Malcolm looked at her.
“Claire.””
“No.””
She stood.
“If Adrian is involved, you don’t walk into this by yourself.””
Malcolm wanted to argue.
Then he remembered something.
Claire had seen the truth before anyone else.
She had been brave when everyone else stayed silent.
“You’re right.””
She looked surprised.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
A small smile appeared.
“But we do this carefully.””
That night, Malcolm arrived at the abandoned factory.
The old building stood in darkness.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal.
A reminder of a past he thought he had escaped.
He stepped inside.
“Nathan.””
His voice echoed.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then footsteps approached.
Nathan appeared from the shadows.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
But still his brother.
“I wondered if you’d come.””
Malcolm stared.
“You destroyed everything.””
Nathan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked around the factory.
“I showed you what was already broken.””
Before Malcolm could respond, another voice came from behind him.
“Family reunions are always emotional.””
Malcolm turned.
Adrian Cross stepped into the light.
And beside him stood someone Malcolm never expected to see.
Someone who made him realize the betrayal was much deeper than he imagined.
Because the person standing next to Adrian…
May you like
Was someone who had been protecting Malcolm all along.
Until tonight.
