Chapter 8: The Assistant’s Secret

Emily Carter had worked for Malcolm Reed for nine years.

Nine years.

Long enough to know his schedule better than he did.

Long enough to know which coffee he preferred.

Long enough to recognize when he was angry even when his voice never changed.

She was not just an assistant.

She was someone Malcolm trusted.

Someone he relied on.

Someone he defended when other executives questioned her decisions.

And now her name was sitting inside a file connected to financial sabotage.

Malcolm stared at the evidence.

Emily Carter.

The transfers.

The communication records.

The meeting schedules.

Everything pointed in one direction.

“She had access,” Daniel said quietly.

Malcolm didn’t answer.

“Mr. Reed?””

“I know.””

Daniel looked concerned.

“You’re certain?””

Malcolm looked at him.

“No.””

The honesty surprised Daniel.

“I’m certain the evidence exists.””

He paused.

“But I’m not certain about Emily.””

Claire watched her father carefully.

“You believe she’s innocent.””

“I believe people are complicated.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Sometimes.””

Malcolm looked at the records again.

“Bring her in.””

Emily entered the office twenty minutes later.

She immediately noticed the atmosphere.

Malcolm.

Daniel.

Claire.

All waiting.

Her expression changed.

“What’s going on?””

Malcolm gestured toward the chair.

“Sit down, Emily.””

She sat.

“What happened?””

Malcolm placed a document on the table.

Emily looked at it.

The moment she recognized the page, the color drained from her face.

That reaction hurt Malcolm more than anger would have.

“You know what this is.””

Emily looked up.

“Malcolm…”

“Answer the question.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Claire looked shocked.

Daniel looked disappointed.

Malcolm felt something break inside.

“Why?””

Emily looked down.

“I never wanted this.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

She took a breath.

“Adrian contacted me two years ago.””

Malcolm stared.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily’s hands trembled.

“Because he knew something.””

“What?””

She looked at Malcolm.

“He knew about my brother.””

The answer changed the room.

“What about your brother?””

Emily swallowed.

“My brother made a mistake.””

Malcolm waited.

“He got involved with the wrong people. Gambling. Debt.””

She closed her eyes.

“He owed money.””

“And Adrian helped?””

Emily nodded.

“At first.””

Malcolm understood.

A favor.

Then a debt.

Then control.

“What did he ask you to do?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“Small things.””

“Such as?””

“Scheduling changes. Meeting information. Internal reports.””

Daniel frowned.

“You leaked company information.””

“I know.””

Emily’s voice cracked.

“But I never gave him anything that could destroy the company.””

Malcolm studied her.

“Did you help him hide complaints?””

She looked away.

That was answer enough.

“Emily.””

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

Malcolm’s voice lowered.

“You helped someone manipulate my company.””

“I know.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I thought I was protecting my family.””

The words stayed in the room.

Because Malcolm understood that feeling.

Doing something wrong while believing you had no choice.

But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

“Where is your brother now?”” Malcolm asked.

Emily hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Malcolm noticed.

“You’re lying.””

She looked at him.

“I…”

“You know.””

Emily said nothing.

Claire stepped forward.

“Emily.””

Her voice was softer.

“If Adrian is threatening you, we can help.””

Emily looked at Claire.

Then back at Malcolm.

“He told me not to trust anyone.””

Malcolm frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he said once you found out, you would destroy me.””

The sentence bothered him.

Because Adrian understood fear.

He used it carefully.

“What else did he say?””

Emily looked terrified.

“He said the company was only the beginning.””

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“The beginning of what?””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The office became quiet.

Then Emily whispered:

“But I know where he is meeting someone tonight.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Someone from your family.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Emily looked at Malcolm.

“Adrian said the final piece of his plan required someone close to you.””

Malcolm stood.

“Who?””

Emily’s face went pale.

“He said you would never suspect them.””

The room felt heavier.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

“Who is it?””

May you like

Her voice barely came out.

“Your brother.””
