Chapter 11: The Forgotten Partner
The old photograph sat on Malcolm Reed’s desk all night.
He didn’t sleep.
He barely moved.
Because the picture changed everything.
For years, Malcolm believed the story of Reed Automotive was simple.
His father created the vision.
Jonathan helped guide it.
Malcolm transformed it into a global company.
But the photograph suggested something else.
Someone else had been there.
Someone whose name had disappeared.
Ethan Vale.
At seven in the morning, Malcolm arrived at the company archives.
Daniel was already waiting.
“We searched everything.””
“And?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“There are gaps.””
Malcolm frowned.
“What kind of gaps?””
“Documents from the early years are incomplete.””
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought so too.””
Malcolm walked toward the archive shelves.
Thousands of files.
Thousands of memories.
But somewhere inside those records was a missing piece.
“Find everything connected to Ethan Vale.””
Daniel hesitated.
“Sir.””
“What?””
“There’s something strange.””
Malcolm turned.
“What?””
“The system shows Ethan’s employment beginning eight years ago.””
“Which we know isn’t true.””
Daniel nodded.
“Correct.””
Malcolm looked at the photo.
“So someone erased his earlier connection.””
“Yes.””
The door opened.
Jonathan entered.
“You found something.””
Malcolm looked at him.
“You knew.””
Jonathan stopped.
A long silence followed.
“You knew about Ethan.””
Jonathan didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Malcolm felt disappointment rise again.
“Why?””
Jonathan looked tired.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
Malcolm laughed softly.
“There it is again.””
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like everyone decided I was too fragile to know my own history.””
“That’s not what it was.””
“Then what was it?””
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Your father trusted Ethan.””
Malcolm froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Jonathan looked at the old photograph.
“Because Ethan was there before the company existed.””
Malcolm stared.
“Explain.””
Jonathan sat down.
“Before Reed Automotive was a brand, it was just an idea.””
He paused.
“Your father had the engineering talent. I had the business knowledge.””
“And Ethan?””
Jonathan sighed.
“Ethan had the ability to see opportunities nobody else saw.””
Malcolm looked at the photo.
“So he helped build it.””
“Yes.””
“Then why erase him?””
Jonathan’s expression changed.
“Because he changed.””
Those two words carried weight.
“What happened?””
Jonathan looked away.
“Success.””
Malcolm waited.
“Ethan became convinced that emotion was the reason businesses failed.””
Jonathan continued.
“He believed people were unpredictable. That customers were irrational. That employees were inefficient.””
Malcolm understood.
The same philosophy.
The same thinking.
“The system.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Started with him.””
The room became silent.
Malcolm looked at the photograph again.
“So Richard wasn’t the architect.””
“No.””
“He wasn’t even the first person.””
“No.””
“Then why did he take the blame?””
Jonathan looked toward the window.
“Because he felt responsible.””
Malcolm frowned.
“For what?””
“For letting Ethan back into the company.””
That surprised him.
“What?””
Jonathan nodded.
“After your father died, Ethan disappeared.””
“When did he return?””
“Years later.””
“When I was CEO?””
“Yes.””
Malcolm felt something twist inside him.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Jonathan looked at him.
“Because I thought he had changed.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
Malcolm sat down.
Everyone had made mistakes.
But each mistake had allowed the next one to happen.
His father trusted Ethan.
Jonathan trusted Ethan.
Richard trusted Ethan.
And eventually, Malcolm trusted Richard.
A chain.
A chain that led to this moment.
His phone rang.
Daniel answered from across the room.
Then his face changed.
“Mr. Reed.””
“What?””
“We found Ethan.””
Malcolm stood.
“Where?””
Daniel looked at the report.
“He owns a consulting firm now.””
“Location?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He’s in the city.””
“Send the address.””
Jonathan looked concerned.
“Malcolm.””
“I need to talk to him.””
“Not alone.””
Malcolm looked at him.
“Why?””
Jonathan’s expression was serious.
“Because Ethan is dangerous in a way most people aren’t.””
“How?””
“He doesn’t force people.””
Jonathan paused.
“He convinces them.””
An hour later, Malcolm arrived at the office building.
It was modern.
Elegant.
Expensive.
The kind of place built by someone who understood appearances.
A receptionist looked up.
“Can I help you?””
“I’m here to see Ethan Vale.””
Her expression changed.
“He’s expecting you.””
Malcolm stopped.
“He is?””
She handed him a card.
“He asked me to give you this when you arrived.””
Malcolm read it.
Only one sentence.
*I wondered how long it would take you to find the truth.*
The elevator doors opened.
Malcolm stepped inside.
And for the first time in years, he felt something unfamiliar.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Curiosity.

Because whoever Ethan Vale was…
He knew Malcolm was coming.
