Chapter 9: The Memory A Child Was Forced To Forget
Nobody spoke.
Not even Richard.
For the first time all night, the man who always had an answer had nothing to say.
Maya’s small voice echoed through the library.
“Uncle Richard said he was sorry.””
Charles stared at his brother.
A thousand memories rushed through his mind.
Richard holding Maya when she was a baby.
Richard laughing at family dinners.
Richard telling everyone he loved Lily like a daughter.
All those moments suddenly looked different.
Because sometimes the most dangerous people were the ones who knew exactly how to appear harmless.
Charles slowly stood.
“Come here.””
Richard didn’t move.
Charles wasn’t talking to him.
He was talking to Maya.
Maya stepped closer.
Charles knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me what you remember.””
She looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s okay.””
Charles softened his voice.
“You don’t have to be afraid.””
Maya looked at Daniel.
Then at Charles.
“I was little.””
“I know.””
“I was scared.””
Charles felt his heart break.
“I know.””
She touched the necklace.
“Mommy told me to hold this.””
Her fingers moved over the silver locket.
“She said someone might try to take it.””
Richard’s expression changed.
A tiny reaction.
But Daniel noticed.
“You knew Lily hid something inside.””
Richard looked at him.
“You’re very observant.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I was there.””
Richard looked at him.
“And you still couldn’t save her.””
The words were cruel.
But Daniel didn’t react.
Because he had carried that guilt for years.
Charles noticed.
Everyone in the room had lost something because of Richard.
But Maya had lost her childhood.
Charles looked back at her.
“What happened after Mommy gave you the necklace?””
Maya closed her eyes.
Trying to remember.
“I was in a car.””
Marcus suddenly looked up.
“A car?””
Maya nodded.
“There was rain.””
Her breathing became uneven.
Charles immediately held her hand.
“You’re safe.””
“There was someone driving.””
“Who?””
Maya frowned.
“I don’t know.””
Then her face changed.
“But Mommy was crying.””
Nobody moved.
“She told someone to protect me.””
Charles looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked destroyed.
Maya continued.
“Then Uncle Richard came.””
Richard remained silent.
“What did he say?”” Charles asked gently.
Maya looked toward him.
“He said…”
She stopped.
The memory hurt.
Charles waited.
“He said Mommy made everything complicated.””
Richard’s face became pale.
“And then?””
Maya looked down.
“He took something from Mommy.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did he take?””
Maya touched the locket.
“The other key.””
Charles froze.
The room froze.
“The other key?”” he repeated.
Maya nodded.
“Mommy had two.””
Daniel immediately looked at the table.
The key Richard had shown earlier.
“The safety deposit box.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“Mommy said one key was for Grandpa.””
Charles felt his heart stop.
“And the other?””
Maya looked at Richard.
“Uncle Richard took it.””
Richard finally spoke.
“That’s impossible.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was no longer calm.
It was defensive.
“You were six years old. You don’t remember.””
Maya stepped back.
Charles immediately moved between them.
“Don’t.””
Richard stared at him.
“She’s confused.””
Charles’s eyes hardened.
“You spent years making everyone believe that.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“You underestimated her.””
The words hit.
Because that was the truth.
Richard had believed Maya was too young.
Too small.
Too powerless.
But children remembered things adults wished they didn’t.
Daniel walked toward the computer.
“There is still one file.””
Everyone looked.
“What file?”” Charles asked.
Daniel pointed.
“The one Lily recorded after this memory.””
He opened it.
A new video appeared.
This time, Lily looked exhausted.
But determined.
“Dad.””
Charles froze.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
The room went quiet.
“I know people will try to convince you that I was unstable.””
Charles looked at Richard.
“They will tell you I was confused.””
A pause.
“They will tell you I made mistakes.””
Lily looked directly at the camera.
“But the one mistake I made was trusting the wrong person.””
Charles’s eyes filled.
Lily continued.
“Richard knows about the account.””
Richard’s face changed.
“He knows about the hidden documents.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And he knows about the company records.””
Charles remembered the fake documents.
The ones with his name.
Lily continued.
“But he doesn’t know everything.””
The screen flickered.
Then Lily smiled sadly.
“Because I hid the most important evidence somewhere he would never look.””
Charles looked around.
“Where?””
Daniel stared at the locket.
Then slowly understood.
“The necklace.””
Lily continued.
“Maya has carried the truth with her since the day she was born.””
Charles touched the locket.
Lily’s voice became softer.
“Maya, if you’re watching this…”
Maya moved closer.
“I want you to know something.””
A tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.
“You were never alone.””
Maya covered her mouth.
“I was always with you.””
The room became emotional.
Even Marcus looked away.
Lily continued.
“Your father made mistakes.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“But he loved you.””
Marcus looked up.
“She knew.””
Charles looked at him.
Lily continued.
“He was afraid. He made the wrong choices. But he did try to protect you.””
Marcus covered his face.
For years, he had believed he didn’t deserve forgiveness.
Maybe he still didn’t.
But Lily had seen something nobody else had.
A broken man.
Not a heartless one.
Then Lily’s expression changed.
“But there is one thing everyone needs to know.””
The room became tense.
“The person who controlled everything…”
She paused.
“Was not Richard alone.””
Charles frowned.
“What?””
Daniel leaned closer.
Lily continued.
“Richard had help.””
Everyone looked around.
Richard immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Lily’s voice continued.
“He could not access the company systems without assistance.””
Charles felt a chill.
Because there was only one other person with that authority.
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa looked back.
And something passed between them.
A silent conversation.
Charles saw it.
“You two.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re blaming me now?””
Charles turned.
“I’m asking questions.””
Richard suddenly laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
“Still trying to understand.””
Charles looked at him.
“Then explain.””
Richard shook his head.
“You never saw what Lily discovered.””
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“She found out the company was already damaged.””
Charles frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard stepped closer.
“Your empire wasn’t as perfect as you thought.””
Daniel interrupted.
“That doesn’t excuse murder.””
Richard looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“But it explains desperation.””
Charles stared.
“What did Lily find?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“The original company records.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“She found the missing files.””
Richard nodded.
“And she planned to expose everyone.””
Charles looked confused.
“Everyone?””
Richard smiled.
“Not just me.””
The room became silent.
Richard looked at Charles.
“Your perfect family was built on secrets.””
Then he turned toward Marcus.
“Your son knew.””
Marcus froze.
Charles looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked away.
Richard continued.
“He knew Lily was investigating.””
Charles’s heart sank.
“Marcus?””
Marcus’s voice was barely audible.
“I knew she found something.””
“And?””
“I was afraid.””
Charles stared.
“Afraid of what?””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Of losing my family.””
Maya’s face fell.
“But you lost me anyway.””
The words destroyed him.
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya didn’t answer.
Because some wounds didn’t close because someone finally apologized.
Richard watched the scene.
Then smiled.
Because he saw the weakness.
He always saw weakness.
“You still don’t understand.””
Charles turned.
“What now?””
Richard reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small drive.
And placed it on the table.
“This is the original file Lily found.””
Daniel stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Richard smiled.
“From the one person who helped me hide it.””
Charles looked around.
“Who?””
Richard’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Then toward Marcus.
And finally…
toward the doorway.
A new figure appeared.
Someone Charles had not seen enter.
Someone holding a gun.
Everyone froze.
The stranger looked at Charles.
Then at Maya.
“I’m sorry.””
Charles stepped in front of Maya.
“Who are you?””
The man lowered his weapon slightly.
“My name is Andrew.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No…”
Charles looked at him.
“You know him?””
Daniel whispered:
“He was Lily’s driver.””
The man looked at Maya.
And his voice shook.
“I was there the night your mother disappeared.””
A pause.
“And I know who gave the order.””
Charles felt the room spin.
“Who?””
Andrew looked directly at Marcus.
May you like
And said:
“Your father.””
