Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
The room changed the moment Richard Whitmore spoke.
For years, Charles had known exactly how his brother entered a room.
Richard never rushed.
Never panicked.
Never raised his voice.
He always moved like a man who already knew the ending.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, Richard had walked into a room full of people who finally knew his secrets.
And for the first time, he looked exposed.
Charles stared at him.
“Richard.””
His brother smiled faintly.
“Hello, Charles.””
The casual greeting made Charles’s stomach turn.
As if this was an ordinary family gathering.
As if they were discussing business.
Not the disappearance of his daughter.
Not the suffering of a child.
Charles stepped forward.
“How long have you known?””
Richard looked around the room.
“At least you finally asked the right question.””
Charles’s eyes narrowed.
“How long?””
Richard sighed.
“Long enough.””
The answer was not enough.
It was never going to be enough.
Daniel moved closer to Maya.
“Stay with your grandfather.””
Maya looked up.
“Why is everyone fighting?””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Because sometimes adults hide things they should have told the truth about.””
Charles heard those words.
And they cut deeper than he expected.
Because they were true.
Too many adults had failed Maya.
Too many people had protected themselves instead of protecting her.
Charles looked at Richard.
“You knew Lily was in danger.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew Vanessa was stealing from the family.””
Still nothing.
“You knew my granddaughter was being hurt.””
Richard’s face remained calm.
Then he said:
“I knew enough.””
The room exploded with anger.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You knew?””
Richard looked at him.
“You sound surprised.””
Marcus’s hands shook.
“My daughter was living in that house.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
Richard looked almost disappointed.
“You think this family survived because people always did the right thing?””
Charles stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard walked toward the table.
He picked up the photograph of Lily and Daniel.
“This means Lily made a mistake.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored him.
“She trusted the wrong people.””
Charles looked at the man he had grown up with.
“You’re talking about my daughter.””
“I’m talking about reality.””
“No.””
Charles’s voice became cold.
“You’re talking about yourself.””
Richard looked at him.
For a moment, something passed between the brothers.
Something old.
Something painful.
Charles remembered being young.
Before the company.
Before the money.
Before everything became about power.
Richard had always been competitive.
Always standing slightly behind Charles.
Always comparing.
Who was smarter.
Who was more successful.
Who was more respected.
Charles had spent years believing his brother simply wanted recognition.
But maybe it was something else.
Maybe it was resentment.
Daniel placed the key on the table.
“This key opens the safety deposit box Lily created before she disappeared.””
Richard’s eyes immediately moved toward it.
A small reaction.
But Charles saw it.
“You know what’s inside.””
Richard looked away.
Charles felt a chill.
“You know.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“You always were observant.””
Charles’s voice dropped.
“Why?””
Richard looked at him.
“Why what?””
“Why would you do this?””
Richard laughed quietly.
The sound carried no happiness.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Richard walked slowly around the room.
“You were always the chosen one.””
Charles frowned.
“What?””
“You were the one everyone admired.””
Richard pointed toward the mansion.
“The company. The money. The respect.””
He looked at Maya.
“Even now, everything belongs to you.””
Charles stared.
“You hurt my daughter because you were jealous?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Don’t make it sound so simple.””
“It is simple.””
“No.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You built an empire and thought you were protecting everyone.””
Charles said nothing.
Richard continued.
“But you never saw what happened underneath.””
Daniel interrupted.
“You manipulated Vanessa.””
Richard looked at him.
“You were always too loyal to Lily.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because she deserved someone who was.””
Richard ignored him.
“Vanessa was easy to influence.””
Charles’s eyes narrowed.
“So you admit it.””
Richard smiled.
“I admit nothing.””
“But you just said—”
“I said she was easy to influence.””
The distinction was deliberate.
Cold.
Calculated.
Charles understood.
Richard never admitted anything unless he controlled the meaning.
Maya suddenly spoke.
“Did you hurt my mommy?””
Everyone went silent.
Richard looked at her.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Something else.
Almost irritation.
Charles immediately stepped between them.
“Do not look at her.””
Richard raised his hands.
“I have never hurt that child.””
“But you hurt her mother.””
Richard looked at Charles.
“I gave Lily a choice.””
Daniel’s face turned angry.
“You threatened her.””
Richard shrugged.
“I warned her.””
Charles felt his blood run cold.
“What did you warn her about?””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
That small movement revealed something.
They had worked together.
Charles turned.
“You and Vanessa.””
Neither answered.
“You worked together.””
Richard smiled.
“Your wife had ambition.””
Charles looked at Marcus.
The words were meant for him.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“She wasn’t my wife.””
Richard glanced at her.
“You wanted to be more than you were.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“Don’t pretend you’re better than me.””
Richard smiled.
“Where would either of us be without each other?””
The room went silent.
Even Vanessa looked shocked.
Because he had admitted it.
Not everything.
But enough.
Charles felt something inside him break.
Two people.
Two adults.
A child caught between them.
He looked at Maya.
She was holding onto his jacket.
Trying to be brave.
Trying not to cry.
Charles knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, I need you to go with Daniel for a moment.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don’t want to leave you.””
His heart broke.
Because she had spent her whole life being left behind.
“I’m not leaving you.””
She searched his face.
“Promise?””
Charles swallowed.
“I promise.””
Daniel gently held out his hand.
After a moment, Maya took it.
When they walked away, Charles stood.
And the grandfather disappeared.
Only the man who wanted answers remained.
“Where is the evidence?””
Richard smiled.
“Still focused on proof.””
“Yes.””
“You think proof changes everything.””
Charles stepped closer.
“It changes your future.””
Richard laughed.
“Maybe.””
Then his expression became serious.
“But it won’t change the truth.””
“What truth?””
Richard looked at him.
“The truth that Lily was planning to expose this entire family.””
Charles froze.
“What?””
“She discovered something.””
Richard leaned closer.
“Something about the company.””
Daniel immediately looked at Charles.
Charles noticed.
“You know.””
Daniel hesitated.
“I know Lily was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Richard answered.
“The money you built.””
Charles stared.
“That makes no sense.””
Richard smiled.
“Doesn’t it?””
He walked toward the window.
“You always believed the company was clean.””
Charles felt a strange fear.
Not because Richard was speaking.
Because Daniel was silent.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Lily found financial records.””
Charles’s face changed.
“What records?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Records showing someone had been moving money through hidden accounts.””
Richard smiled.
“And now you understand.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
Richard turned.
“You don’t want to believe it.””
“Believe what?””
Richard looked at him.
“That the person who betrayed Lily…”
A pause.
“Was the person she trusted most.””
Charles felt his heart sink.
He looked at Marcus.
His son’s face had gone pale.
Because somehow…
Marcus already knew.
Charles’s voice was barely a whisper.
“What did Lily find?””
Nobody answered.
Then Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small folder.
And placed it on the table.
“Everything.””
Charles stared.
Richard continued.
“Your daughter discovered who was stealing from Whitmore International.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
One name was written across the top.
Charles looked down.
And his entire world stopped.
Because the name on the page was not Richard’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Not even Marcus’s.
It was his own.
*Charles Whitmore.*
Richard smiled.
“Now you can finally understand why Lily ran.””
And from the hallway, Maya’s voice suddenly screamed.
“Grandpa!””
Everyone turned.
A second later, Daniel rushed back into the room.
May you like
His face was terrified.
“Maya is gone.””
