Chapter 8: The Choice Marcus Never Told Anyone
The name on the screen stayed there.
Marcus Whitmore.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than shouting.
Charles slowly turned his head.
His eyes found his son.
Marcus looked like all the strength had left his body.
For years, he had hidden behind silence.
Behind excuses.
Behind fear.
But now there was nowhere left to hide.
“Maya,” Charles whispered.
The little girl was still holding his hand.
She looked at the screen.
Then at her father.
“Daddy?””
Marcus flinched.
That one word carried years of pain.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Just confusion.
Because to Maya, he was still her father.
The man she had begged for help.
The man she had called when she was scared.
The man who never came.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Don’t play that video.””
Charles stared at him.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Charles stepped closer.
“Why, Marcus?””
His son swallowed.
“Because she’ll hate me.””
The words shocked everyone.
Vanessa looked at him.
Richard remained silent.
Even Daniel seemed surprised.
Charles looked toward Maya.
Then back at Marcus.
“You’re worried about her hating you?””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“I know what I did.””
“No.””
Charles’s voice was quiet.
“You know what you allowed.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The difference hurt.
Because he did know.
He knew every moment.
Every time Maya looked at him.
Every time she waited.
Every time she asked for help.
And every time he chose silence.
Daniel looked at the computer.
“The file is from Lily.””
Charles nodded.
“Play it.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The entire room froze.
Charles looked at him.
“Move.””
“Dad—”
“Move.””
Marcus stopped.
Because for the first time in his life, Charles wasn’t asking.
He was demanding.
Daniel pressed play.
The screen lit up.
Lily appeared again.
But this time, she looked different.
Not afraid.
Determined.
“Marcus.””
The moment she said his name, Marcus looked away.
“I know you’re watching this.””
A tear moved down his face.
“You always thought silence could protect people.””
Marcus swallowed.
“But silence is what destroyed us.””
Charles watched his son.
Because those words were not an accusation.
They were a truth.
Lily continued.
“I need you to remember the night Maya disappeared.””
Maya held tighter to Charles.
Charles noticed.
He placed an arm around her.
Lily looked into the camera.
“I called you because I trusted you.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I told you Vanessa was dangerous.””
The room became still.
“I told you she knew about Maya’s inheritance.””
Charles looked at Vanessa.
Her face was expressionless.
But her hands were shaking.
Lily continued.
“You told me you would come.””
Marcus whispered:
“I was going to.””
Nobody moved.
Everyone heard him.
Charles looked at him.
“You were going to?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
The video continued.
“I waited.””
Lily’s voice cracked.
“I waited for two hours.””
A painful silence.
“Then Vanessa arrived.””
Maya looked up.
“Vanessa?””
Charles felt his stomach tighten.
Lily continued.
“She told me Marcus changed his mind.””
Marcus looked horrified.
“He never said that.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Stop.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at the screen.
“Turn it off.””
Charles looked at her.
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice became desperate.
“You don’t know what happened.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“We know enough.””
“No!””
For the first time, Vanessa lost control.
“I did what I had to do.””
The room froze.
Charles stared.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa realized what she had admitted.
Her face changed.
But it was too late.
Maya looked frightened.
Charles immediately moved closer to her.
“Daniel, take Maya out.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“I want to know.””
Charles looked down.
She was six years old.
But she had spent her whole life with missing pieces.
Maybe she deserved the truth.
Daniel stayed beside her.
The video continued.
Lily’s voice returned.
“Vanessa took Maya.””
Marcus went pale.
“No.””
Lily continued.
“She said she was going to send her away.””
Charles looked at Marcus.
“You knew.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn’t know that part.””
The video played.
“I begged Marcus.””
Lily’s voice trembled.
“I begged him to choose Maya.””
A pause.
“But he chose fear.””
Marcus broke.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody looked at him.
Because sorry was too small.
Too late.
Lily continued.
“Marcus didn’t take Maya.””
Everyone listened carefully.
“He didn’t hurt her.””
Marcus looked up.
A tiny moment of relief.
Then Lily finished:
“But he helped Vanessa hide what happened.””
Marcus looked down.
And Charles understood.
The worst part was not what Marcus did.
It was what he failed to do.
Lily continued.
“After Vanessa took Maya, Marcus found me.””
Charles froze.
Marcus looked at the screen.
“You found Lily?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
The video continued.
“He told me Maya was safe.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“But he refused to tell me where.””
Charles turned.
“Marcus?””
His son was crying silently.
“I was trying to fix it.””
Charles stared.
“By doing nothing?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I was trying to protect Maya.””
The room remained silent.
Marcus looked at Charles.
“Vanessa threatened me.””
Nobody expected that.
“She said if I went against her, she would make sure I lost everything.””
Charles’s expression hardened.
“And you believed her.””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
Charles looked at Maya.
Then back at his son.
“You let her suffer because you were afraid of losing money?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Marcus’s voice became barely audible.
“Because she said she would hurt Maya.””
The room changed.
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
Charles felt anger rise.
But before he could speak, the video continued.
Lily’s voice returned.
“Marcus eventually helped me.””
Marcus looked up.
Everyone turned.
Charles frowned.
“What?””
Lily continued.
“He found a way to get Maya away from Vanessa.””
Maya looked confused.
“Daddy helped me?””
Marcus looked at her.
His face broke.
“Yes.””
His voice cracked.
“I did.””
The little girl stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus had no answer.
Because there was none.
Because he had been too afraid.
Too ashamed.
Too weak.
The video continued.
“I asked Daniel to take Maya somewhere safe.””
Daniel nodded.
“I did.””
Lily looked at the camera.
“And I asked Marcus to stay behind.””
Charles frowned.
“Why?””
The answer came seconds later.
“Because someone had to make Vanessa believe Maya was gone forever.””
The room froze.
Charles looked at Marcus.
Marcus whispered:
“That was the plan.””
A cold feeling moved through Charles.
“Then what happened?””
Nobody answered.
The video showed Lily taking a deep breath.
“Something went wrong.””
The screen flickered.
Then Lily said:
“Someone found us.””
The image became distorted.
Her voice became urgent.
“Marcus, if you are watching this, it means you failed to tell them the most important part.””
Marcus looked terrified.
Lily continued.
“The person who found us wasn’t Vanessa.””
Charles felt his heartbeat increase.
Richard slowly looked away.
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he knew what was coming.
Lily looked directly into the camera.
“It was someone inside Whitmore International.””
A pause.
“Someone who had access to every security system.””
Charles’s eyes widened.
Because only a few people had that level of access.
Then Lily spoke the name.
The room went silent.
“Richard.””
Everyone turned.
Richard’s expression finally broke.
For the first time…
he looked afraid.
Charles stared at his brother.
“You.””
Richard said nothing.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Lily knew.””
Charles’s hands shook.
All these years.
All those lies.
All those people blaming each other.
And the person who started it all had been standing in the room.
Richard slowly smiled.
But it wasn’t confidence anymore.
It was desperation.
“You still don’t understand.””
Charles looked at him.
“What don’t I understand?””
Richard looked at Maya.
Then at Charles.
“Lily wasn’t the only one who discovered the truth.””
A pause.
“Your granddaughter did too.””
Charles froze.
Maya looked confused.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“The night Lily disappeared…”
He pointed toward the necklace.
“She left something inside that locket.””
Everyone looked at Maya.
Richard continued:
“Not evidence.””
A pause.
“Instructions.””
Charles felt cold.
“What instructions?””
Richard’s smile widened.
“Ask Maya what she remembers about that night.””
The room went silent.
Because nobody had ever asked.
Not once.
Charles slowly looked at the little girl beside him.
“Maya…”
Her face changed.
A memory.
A tiny fragment.
Something buried for years.
She touched the locket.
And whispered:
“I remember someone saying…”
Her voice trembled.
“They were sorry.””
Charles knelt.
“Who said that?””
Maya looked toward Richard.
May you like
And whispered the words that made everyone freeze.
“Uncle Richard.””
