Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Missing Money

Victor Hale stood in the doorway as if he had been invited.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his expensive suit.

Not the calm expression on his face.

Not the way Margaret immediately looked away.

It was the confidence.

A person who knew he was welcome did not knock.

A person who knew he was powerful did not wait to be invited inside.

Victor looked around the library.

Then his eyes landed on Daniel.

"You're finally asking the right questions.""

Daniel didn't move.

"You have some nerve coming here.""

Victor smiled faintly.

"I expected anger.""

"You should expect worse.""

The old confidence was back in Daniel's voice.

But this time it wasn't arrogance.

It was pain trying to disguise itself as strength.

Victor looked at Alexander.

Then at me.

His expression changed slightly.

"So.""

A pause.

"The family reunion finally happened.""

Alexander stepped forward.

"You knew.""

Victor didn't answer.

"You knew Edward was alive.""

Silence.

Daniel looked at him.

"Answer him.""

Victor sighed.

"I knew.""

The honesty shocked everyone.

Even Daniel.

"You admit it?""

"Why would I lie now?""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Because apparently everyone in my life has been doing exactly that.""

Victor glanced at Margaret.

She didn't meet his eyes.

That told me everything.

There was a connection between them.

A partnership.

Maybe something worse.

I stepped forward.

"Why were you here?""

Victor looked at me.

"Claire Carter.""

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

Not because it was threatening.

Because it sounded familiar.

Like he had studied me.

"I know who you are.""

"Then you know I don't like surprises.""

A small smile appeared.

"I imagine you don't.""

Daniel looked between us.

"Why does he know you?""

I looked at him.

"I don't know.""

But the truth was, I had a terrible feeling that I was about to find out.

Victor walked into the library.

Nobody stopped him.

Not because they trusted him.

Because everyone was trying to understand what kind of game he was playing.

He placed a briefcase on the desk.

"Nine years ago, Edward Whitmore discovered something.""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"What?""

Victor looked at Margaret.

Then back at Daniel.

"He discovered that someone had been manipulating the company.""

Alexander's expression hardened.

"You mean stealing.""

Victor ignored him.

"Edward believed the person responsible was close to him.""

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then at Victor.

"Was it you?""

Victor smiled.

"That's the question everyone wants answered.""

The room became tense.

I hated people like him.

People who treated the truth like a negotiation.

"You were involved," I said.

Victor looked at me.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked shocked.

"You're admitting it?""

"I was involved in the financial restructuring.""

"Not what I asked.""

Victor leaned against the desk.

"Your father hired me.""

Daniel froze.

"My father?""

"Yes.""

Margaret looked up.

"That's not true.""

Victor looked at her.

"You know it is.""

Daniel turned toward his mother.

"What is happening?""

Nobody answered.

Victor opened his briefcase.

Inside were several documents.

"Edward hired me because he believed the company was vulnerable.""

Alexander stepped closer.

"Vulnerable because of you.""

Victor looked at him.

"No.""

A pause.

"Because of your mother.""

Margaret's face tightened.

"I made mistakes.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Mistakes?""

His voice was almost a whisper.

"You hid my brother.""

He looked at Victor.

"You helped cover my father's disappearance.""

Then at Margaret.

"You lied to me for nine years.""

He shook his head.

"And you call them mistakes?""

Margaret had no answer.

Victor placed a document on the desk.

"Your father asked me to investigate the company.""

Daniel picked it up.

The same handwriting.

Edward's signature.

"This is real.""

Victor nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel read further.

Then stopped.

His eyes moved toward me.

"What?""

He handed me the document.

My heart sank when I saw my name.

*Claire Carter — Executive Authority Assignment*

I looked at Victor.

"What is this?""

"Your father created it before he disappeared.""

Daniel stared.

"Why?""

Victor answered:

"Because he knew you would eventually be forced to choose between the truth and your family.""

I looked at the document.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

"This is fake.""

Victor shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why is my signature here?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Margaret.

She looked away.

Daniel noticed.

"Mother?""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I forged it.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at her.

"You forged Claire's signature?""

"I needed access.""

"Access to what?""

"The company.""

I stared at her.

She had used my identity.

My authority.

My reputation.

For nine years.

Victor continued.

"Margaret created documents showing Claire had approved certain transfers.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because if the transactions were discovered, the blame would fall on Claire.""

The air disappeared from the room.

I felt cold.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The accusations.

The board meeting.

The apology.

Margaret hadn't just wanted to humiliate me.

She wanted to erase me.

Daniel looked at me.

"She was going to frame you.""

I didn't answer.

Because hearing him say it hurt.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it was finally the first time he understood.

Margaret stood.

"I never intended for it to go that far.""

I looked at her.

"You demanded I kneel.""

Her face changed.

"I was angry.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

"You were afraid.""

The room went quiet.

Because that was the truth.

Margaret Whitmore had never been afraid of me.

Until tonight.

Until I opened the folder.

Until the documents came out.

Until the family she controlled started seeing her clearly.

Victor walked toward the window.

"Edward knew this would happen.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Where is my father?""

Victor remained silent.

"Where is he?""

"I don't know.""

Everyone stared.

Daniel's face hardened.

"You're lying.""

Victor looked at him.

"I'm not.""

"Then why are you here?""

Victor looked at me.

"Because Edward asked me to protect Claire.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why me?""

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because your father knew the person who saved Whitmore Holdings wasn't Daniel.""

Daniel looked down.

I saw the pain.

Even now.

Even after everything.

The truth still hurt.

Victor continued.

"It was you.""

I looked away.

Because I didn't need praise.

Not anymore.

I needed answers.

"What happened the night Edward disappeared?""

Victor became serious.

"Your father left because he discovered the person behind the financial manipulation.""

"Who?""

Nobody moved.

Victor looked at Margaret.

She whispered:

"No.""

Daniel turned.

"Mother?""

Victor answered.

"It wasn't Margaret.""

Everyone froze.

That was not what we expected.

Victor opened another file.

"The person moving money through the company wasn't her.""

Margaret looked stunned.

"What?""

Victor looked at her.

"You thought you were controlling the accounts.""

Her face went pale.

"But someone was using you.""

The room became silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?""

Victor slowly placed a photograph on the desk.

A man.

A younger man.

Standing beside Edward Whitmore.

I recognized him.

Because I had seen him before.

In old company photos.

At charity events.

At family gatherings.

Someone everyone trusted.

Someone nobody questioned.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

His expression changed.

"No.""

I looked at the picture.

The name beneath it made my heart stop.

*Richard Whitmore.*

Edward's younger brother.

Daniel's uncle.

Margaret whispered:

"He died twenty years ago.""

Victor shook his head.

"No.""

A pause.

"He didn't.""

Daniel stared.

"What are you saying?""

Victor looked at all of us.

"The person who has been controlling the money, manipulating the company, and hiding Edward Whitmore...""

He took a breath.

"...is someone your family buried before he ever disappeared.""

The lights flickered.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Claire.""

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at me.

Alexander stepped closer.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Because everyone knew that voice.

Edward Whitmore.

"I don't have much time.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Where are you?""

A pause.

Then he said:

"Somewhere your family has been searching for nine years.""

I swallowed.

"Where?""

His voice dropped.

"Under the Whitmore estate.""

The call ended.

And in the silence that followed, every person in the room understood the same terrifying truth.

May you like

Edward Whitmore had not been hiding from us.

He had been hidden beneath us.
