Chapter 6: The Heir Who Came Back for the Truth
Daniel stared at Alexander as if looking at a ghost.
Maybe because, in a way, he was.
For nine years, Daniel had lived with the certainty that his family had a beginning and an ending.
His father.
His mother.
Him.
A perfect family story.
A clean family tree.
Now a man stood in front of him and ripped apart everything he believed about his own name.
"You expect me to believe this?""
Daniel's voice was low.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just lost.
Alexander looked at him.
"I expected you to ask questions.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Questions?""
He pointed around the room.
"You walk into my house after nine years and tell me you're my brother.""
Alexander didn't react.
"This is not your house.""
The words landed immediately.
Daniel's face tightened.
Margaret stood.
"Enough.""
Alexander looked at her.
The emotion between them was impossible to miss.
Years of resentment.
Years of betrayal.
"You still do that.""
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Do what?""
"Control the room when you know you're losing.""
For the first time that night, I saw Margaret speechless.
Daniel looked between them.
"You two know each other.""
Alexander looked at him.
"Of course we do.""
Margaret looked away.
"Daniel, don't listen to him.""
Alexander smiled sadly.
"That is exactly what she told your father.""
Daniel froze.
The mention of his father changed everything.
"Tell me what happened.""
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the table.
At the documents.
At the apology letter torn in half.
Then he looked at me.
"You opened the folder.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"And you found the agreement.""
"Yes.""
Alexander gave a small nod.
"My father was right.""
Daniel looked at him.
"What does that mean?""
"It means he knew she would eventually try to remove Claire.""
Margaret's eyes flashed.
"Do not speak about things you don't understand.""
Alexander turned toward her.
"I understand more than anyone.""
His voice became colder.
"I watched my father lose everything because he trusted you.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Stop talking around it.""
Alexander looked at him.
"Your mother didn't just hide me from you.""
He paused.
"She hid what she did to your father.""
The room became silent again.
I noticed Daniel's hands.
They were clenched.
Waiting.
Needing answers.
"What did she do?""
Alexander looked at Margaret.
"Tell him.""
She didn't move.
"Tell your son the truth.""
Margaret's face hardened.
"You have no right.""
Alexander laughed quietly.
"No right?""
He looked around the mansion.
"The mansion I was supposed to inherit?""
He looked at Daniel.
"The family I was supposed to be part of?""
Then back at Margaret.
"The father you convinced everyone was dead?""
His voice dropped.
"I think I have every right.""
Daniel turned toward his mother.
"Mom.""
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Like he wasn't sure he was still allowed to call her that.
"Tell me.""
Margaret looked at him.
And for a moment, I saw something human.
Regret.
But then it disappeared.
"You don't understand.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That sentence means nothing anymore.""
She sat down slowly.
"Your father was going to change everything.""
Alexander nodded.
"Yes.""
Margaret looked at him.
"He was going to destroy the family.""
"No.""
Alexander's voice was firm.
"He was going to stop you.""
Daniel looked at Alexander.
"Stop her from what?""
Alexander took a breath.
"From selling pieces of the company without anyone knowing.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
I already knew some of it.
But hearing it spoken aloud made it different.
Alexander continued.
"Your mother created private accounts. She moved assets. She convinced your father that the losses were temporary.""
Margaret interrupted.
"I was protecting the business.""
Alexander looked at her.
"By stealing from it?""
Her face went cold.
"Careful.""
"No.""
Alexander stepped forward.
"Everyone spent years being careful with you.""
The room went quiet.
"Your father was careful. Daniel was careful. Claire was careful.""
He looked at me.
"But nobody was honest.""
The words hurt because they were true.
Daniel looked at me.
"I didn't know.""
I met his eyes.
"I know.""
The sadness on his face was immediate.
Because that was the problem.
He didn't know.
But he also never tried hard enough to know.
Alexander continued.
"When my father discovered what was happening, he confronted her.""
Margaret looked down.
"That night...""
Daniel whispered.
"What happened that night?""
Alexander's expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
"He planned to leave.""
Daniel frowned.
"Leave?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he was afraid.""
I looked at Alexander.
"Of your mother?""
He nodded.
"Not because he thought she would hurt him.""
A pause.
"Because he thought she would hurt Daniel.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Me?""
Alexander nodded.
"My father believed she had spent years shaping you to depend on her.""
The words cut deeper than any accusation.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
She didn't deny it.
"I was protecting you.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"There it is again.""
"What?""
"That excuse.""
His voice became stronger.
"You always say you protected me.""
Margaret stood.
"Because I did.""
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You protected your control over me.""
Nobody spoke.
I watched Margaret absorb the words.
Because they came from the person she thought she owned.
Her son.
The man she had spent years influencing.
Alexander walked toward the table and picked up the photograph.
"The night your father left, he wasn't alone.""
Daniel looked up.
"Who was he with?""
Alexander looked at me.
Then Daniel.
"Me.""
The answer shocked everyone.
Even Daniel.
"You were there?""
Alexander nodded.
"I met him three months before that night.""
Daniel stared.
"My father knew you existed?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
Alexander looked away.
"Because he wanted to.""
A pause.
"But someone stopped him.""
Daniel's eyes moved to Margaret.
She looked away.
The truth was becoming impossible to avoid.
"He planned to introduce us after he secured the company," Alexander said.
"Why wait?""
"Because he knew you would be forced to choose.""
Daniel frowned.
"Choose what?""
"Your father knew Margaret would make you choose between him and her.""
Daniel went still.
Because he knew.
Somewhere deep inside, he knew.
Alexander continued.
"That night, your father left documents with me.""
"The ownership documents.""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't he come back?""
Alexander's expression changed.
"Because he learned something.""
"What?""
Alexander looked at Margaret.
"That someone had followed him.""
Margaret's face went pale.
Daniel noticed.
"You knew.""
She didn't answer.
"You knew someone followed him.""
Still nothing.
"Mother.""
Her silence broke something inside him.
Alexander reached into his pocket.
He removed a small envelope.
"This was left for you.""
Daniel looked at it.
"From who?""
Alexander handed it to him.
"Your father.""
Daniel didn't move.
The envelope had his name written across the front.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
Daniel.
His fingers trembled as he took it.
I watched him open it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
He read silently.
Then his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"What?""
I stepped closer.
Daniel looked at me.
"My father knew.""
"Knew what?""
He handed me the letter.
The handwriting was clear.
Simple.
Direct.
And the final line made my stomach drop.
*Daniel, if you're reading this, it means your mother has already tried to take control of the company. Do not trust anyone who tells you I abandoned you.*
I looked at Daniel.
Alexander.
Margaret.
Then back at the letter.
Because there was one sentence written below that.
One sentence that explained why my father-in-law had trusted me more than his own family.
*The only person who can stop what is coming is Claire.*
Daniel read the line again.
His face changed.
"Why you?""
I looked at Alexander.
Neither of us answered.
Because we didn't know.
Not completely.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
Something written at the bottom of the page.
A date.
A recent date.
Not nine years ago.
A date from three months earlier.
His father had written this letter after disappearing.
Daniel whispered:
"He was alive.""
Alexander nodded.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked up.
"Where is he now?""
Alexander hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
Because I suddenly realized something.
The truth was not hidden because someone wanted to protect the family.
It was hidden because someone was still afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where is my father?""
Alexander looked toward the window.
Outside, beyond the gardens, a second car had stopped near the gates.
Someone was watching the house.
Alexander's face changed.
"Because now...""
He lowered his voice.
"...I think he knows we found each other.""
The lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
And in the darkness, my phone received one final message.
Not from an unknown number.
From a contact I had deleted nine years ago.
A name I thought would never appear on my screen again.
*Edward Whitmore.*
May you like
The message contained only five words.
*Get Daniel away from her.*
