Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The name on the document stared back at me.
Aaron Mitchell.
My friend.
My business partner.
The man who had helped me.
The man who claimed he was protecting me.
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
Aaron didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Explain.””
He sat down slowly.
“I can explain.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
My mother looked confused.
“Daniel, I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
“Aaron’s name is on the document.””
Aaron looked at the floor.
“It’s not what it looks like.””
I laughed.
“I’m starting to hate that sentence.””
Emily stayed quiet.
She had heard it too many times.
Aaron rubbed his hands together.
“My father worked for Victor.””
The room changed.
“What?””
“My father was involved.””
“In what?””
“Helping Victor move money.””
I stared at him.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“Your whole life?””
He nodded.
“My father confessed before he died.””
I felt sick.
“So you became friends with me because of Victor?””
“No.””
The answer came fast.
“I became friends with you because of your father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Aaron looked at me.
“Your father helped my family.””
I didn’t understand.
“He did what?””
“When my father got involved with Victor, your father tried to stop him. He helped my mother leave. He protected me.””
Aaron’s eyes filled.
“Your father saved my life.””
I looked at the documents.
“Then why is your name here?””
“Because Victor forced me.””
“How?””
“He threatened my family.””
The same story again.
Fear.
Pressure.
Secrets.
Everyone connected to my family had been trapped by Victor in some way.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your father told me not to.””
I stared at him.
“My father?””
Aaron nodded.
“He said if Victor ever came back, I needed to stay close to you.””
“Why?””
“To protect you.””
The anger inside me weakened.
But only slightly.
“You still lied.””
“Yes.””
“You used my trust.””
“Yes.””
“You let me suspect everyone else.””
His voice cracked.
“I know.””
I looked away.
The truth was becoming exhausting.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had pain.
But damage was still damage.
Then my mother spoke.
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at Aaron.
“You never told him about the second file.””
Aaron froze.
My stomach tightened.
“Second file?””
Aaron looked defeated.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“After I knew he was safe.””
I stood.
“Enough.””
I grabbed the documents.
“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””
Everyone went quiet.
“I spent my entire life being the person everyone wanted to protect.””
I looked at Emily.
“And somehow, that made everyone think lying was acceptable.””
Emily lowered her eyes.
I looked at my mother.
“Mom, I love you.””
She started crying.
“But you should have trusted me.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
I looked at Aaron.
“Same.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
That night, I opened the second file.
Inside were years of records.
Payments.
Messages.
Evidence.
And one final piece.
A video.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting at his desk.
I pressed play.
His face appeared on the screen.
My breath caught.
“Daniel.””
Hearing my name from him almost broke me.
“If you are watching this, then something happened.””
He smiled sadly.
“I hope I’m wrong.””
I sat frozen.
“My son, you have always believed people are good.””
A tear escaped my eye.
“That is your greatest strength.””
He paused.
“And your greatest weakness.””
The video continued.
“Victor will not attack you directly. He will attack the people around you.””
I looked at Emily.
At my mother.
At Aaron.
“He will create doubt.””
My father leaned closer.
“He will make you question the people who love you.””
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“But Daniel, remember this.””
A pause.
“The person trying to destroy your family is not looking for money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
My father continued.
“He wants something your family owns.””
I looked at the documents.
“What?””
The screen flickered.
Then my father said:
“He wants the company.””
The video ended.
I sat there in silence.
The money.
The lies.
The manipulation.
It was never about the birthday money.
It was never about Emily’s clothes.
It was never about Rachel.
Victor had been moving pieces for years.
And now I understood.
He didn’t want revenge.
He wanted control.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man spoke.
“Daniel.””
I knew the voice.
Victor.
After all this time.
“What do you want?””
A quiet laugh.
“I think you know.””
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere you should have looked sooner.””
My jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He answered:
“It means I already have what your father hid.””
I stood.
“What?””
“And Daniel…”
His voice became colder.
“You should ask your wife why she helped me find it.””
The call ended.
I looked at Emily.
May you like
Her face had gone completely white.
Because she knew exactly what he meant.
