Chapter 11: The Account Nobody Knew About

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was angry.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my brain refused to accept reality.

For months, I thought I was investigating Emily.

Then I discovered Rachel.

Then Mark.

Then Thomas.

Now Aaron was telling me someone accessed my accounts.

Someone had been moving money.

Someone had been hiding things.

And somehow, everyone knew pieces of the truth except me.

At 6:00 a.m., I opened my banking app.

I expected nothing.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything except what I saw.

There was a transfer.

A large one.

Six months earlier.

The same month Emily started changing.

The same month Rachel came back.

The same month Mark entered the picture.

The description was simple.

“Emergency Family Support.””

I stared at it.

Because I didn’t remember making it.

I checked the details.

The money went to an account I didn’t recognize.

Not Emily.

Not Rachel.

Not anyone in my family.

I felt sick.

“Daniel?””

I looked up.

Emily stood in the doorway.

She looked exhausted.

“Did you find something?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Her face changed.

“I don’t know that account.””

“I believe you.””

The words surprised both of us.

Because trust was damaged.

But something had changed.

We were finally facing the same enemy.

“What do we do?””

I grabbed my jacket.

“We find out who owns it.””

The bank couldn’t give us everything immediately.

Privacy rules.

Verification.

Procedures.

But they gave us enough.

The account belonged to a company.

A small consulting company.

The owner name made my hands go cold.

Aaron.

I stared at the paperwork.

“No.””

Emily looked over.

“What?””

“Aaron.””

Her face changed.

“Your friend?””

I nodded.

The person who had helped me start a business.

The person who had been around our family.

The person who had comforted Emily when our marriage was struggling.

The person who knew everything.

That afternoon, I drove to Aaron’s office.

Emily came with me.

Neither of us spoke much.

When we arrived, Aaron was waiting outside.

That told me he knew.

“You found it.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

He looked tired.

Not surprised.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“I can explain.””

“Everyone says that.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“Why was money from my account going to your company?””

Aaron took a breath.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By stealing from me?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“I never stole anything.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“Your wife was being manipulated.””

Emily frowned.

“By who?””

Aaron hesitated.

“That’s the part I couldn’t prove.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Your father.””

The world went quiet.

My father had been dead for five years.

“What?””

Aaron shook his head.

“Not your father.””

He corrected himself.

“Your father’s old business partner.””

I felt confused.

“My father’s business partner died.””

“No.””

Aaron looked at me.

“Everyone thought he did.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

Aaron continued.

“His name is Victor.””

The name meant nothing.

Until suddenly…

It did.

An old name.

A name from childhood.

A man who used to visit our house.

A man my father trusted.

“What does he have to do with this?””

Aaron looked at me.

“He believes your father stole money from him.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because Victor has spent years trying to get revenge.””

I looked at Emily.

“What does this have to do with my wife?””

Aaron sighed.

“Victor contacted her.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

The exact timeline.

“What did he tell her?””

“That you were hiding money.””

Emily went pale.

“He told me Daniel had another account.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him?””

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

Aaron nodded.

“That’s why she hired Thomas.””

Everything connected.

The fear.

The investigation.

The money.

The secrets.

But one question remained.

“Why did Victor care about our family?””

Aaron looked at me.

“Because he believes your father left something behind.””

“Something?””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Aaron reached into his bag.

He pulled out an envelope.

“I found this hidden in the old business records.””

My name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

My father’s handwriting.

I hadn’t seen it in years.

I took it.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Aaron looked serious.

“The reason Victor has been trying to destroy your family.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my heart stop.

Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Victor found out about the money before I could explain.

I looked at Aaron.

Then Emily.

Then back at the letter.

Because suddenly I realized something.

May you like

My father had known this day might come.

And he had left me a warning.
