Chapter 9: The Sister He Never Knew

For several seconds, Victoria made no sound.

She stood in the basement of the abandoned Carter building, staring at the photograph in Richard's hand as though the paper itself had become something monstrous.

Then she shook her head.

“No.””

Richard lowered the photograph.

“Victoria—”

“No!”” she shouted.

“You don't get to tell me who my mother was. You don't get to rewrite my entire life because you need something from me.””

Her voice cracked.

“My mother raised me. She held me when I was sick. She taught me to read.

She sat beside my bed when I had nightmares. Whatever secrets my father kept, she was my mother.””

Richard said nothing.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Where did you get that photograph?””

“From Michael's private records.””

“Then prove it's authentic.””

Richard reached into the folder and produced a sealed envelope.

“Birth records. Hospital correspondence. A letter from Michael himself.””

Ethan took the envelope.

The documents were old but carefully preserved. The hospital record listed two births on the same night, separated by twenty-three minutes.

The first child had been registered as Olivia Hayes.

The second had been registered as Victoria Hayes.

A handwritten note in the margin stated that the second infant had been transferred to another family following an arrangement approved by the children's father.

Ethan looked up.

“Why were they separated?””

Richard's expression tightened.

“Michael believed he could protect one child from the scandal surrounding the company. He arranged for Victoria to be raised by his wife's sister, who had recently lost a child.””

Victoria stared at him.

“So my aunt was my mother?””

“Your adoptive mother.””

“And Michael?””

“Your biological father.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Then why did he let me believe my father was someone else?””

“Because he thought the truth would destroy you.””

Victoria laughed through her tears.

“Everyone in this family seems to have the same excuse.””

Ethan understood the bitterness in her voice.

His own childhood had been shaped by secrets disguised as protection. His father had concealed financial crimes to protect the company. His mother had concealed her involvement to protect her children.

Richard had disappeared to protect himself. And now Victoria had spent eighteen months deceiving Ethan because she believed the truth would cost her everything.

Every person had chosen what they considered the lesser evil.

And every choice had left someone else to pay for it.

Daniel broke the silence.

“Richard, let's get something straight. If Victoria and Olivia are both beneficiaries, why did you need Ethan to marry her?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because the trust contains a condition. If either beneficiary enters into a marriage with a direct descendant of the Carter family before the six-month review, the trustees must conduct a full examination of the original transfer.””

Daniel frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It makes perfect sense if the original transfer was fraudulent. The marriage forces the matter into the open.””

Ethan studied the document.

“My mother wrote the clause.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew the truth would eventually be buried again unless someone had a reason to uncover it.””

Richard placed his hands on the table.

“Your mother believed that if the family ever tried to conceal the transfer again, the trust would provide a mechanism to expose it.””

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Did you know about this clause?””

“No.””

Richard answered before she could continue.

“She knew about the six-month review, but I never told her the marriage would activate the investigation. I told her it would give us time to recover the documents and establish her claim.””

Victoria turned on him.

“You told me that once I married Ethan, I would be able to recover my father's stolen money.””

“You will.””

“You told me the prenup would be irrelevant.””

“It will be, once the trust is properly activated.””

“You told me I could leave with enough money to live comfortably for the rest of my life!””

Richard's face hardened.

“I told you what you needed to hear.””

Victoria stared at him.

Then she slapped him.

The sound cracked through the basement.

“You used me.””

Richard slowly turned his face back toward her.

“Yes,” he said.

“I did.””

The admission seemed to drain the last of her anger.

She sank into a chair and covered her face.

Ethan looked at his uncle.

“You knew I loved her.””

“I knew you were vulnerable.””

“And you used that.””

“Your father used everything he could to protect his empire. I used everything I could to expose him.””

“You're no different from him.””

Richard's eyes flashed.

“Perhaps not.””

For the first time, the older man looked tired.

“I have spent twenty years trying to correct a decision I made in a single afternoon. I lost my family. I lost my home.

I lost the right to watch you grow up. And for what? So your father could keep the company.””

Ethan felt no sympathy.

“Then why didn't you come to me?””

“Because I had no evidence. And because your father made it clear that if I returned, he would ensure that every document connected to me disappeared.””

“My mother had the evidence.””

“She had part of it. Michael had the rest. When your mother died, I believed the last copy had been destroyed.””

“Yet you knew about the necklace.””

“Your mother told me the emeralds contained a key. I searched for it for years.””

Ethan held up the empty velvet box.

“You stole the necklace.””

Richard nodded.

“I did.””

“Where is it?””

“In a secure location.””

“Give it to me.””

“Not until you understand what it opens.””

Ethan took a step forward.

Richard raised a hand.

“Listen to me. The necklace contains a miniature key hidden beneath one of the emerald settings. That key opens a deposit box at a private bank. Inside are the original transfer documents and a second ledger.””

“The ledger that proves the money was stolen?””

“The ledger that proves where the money went.””

“Where did it go?””

Richard looked toward Victoria.

“To an account that still exists.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“How much money are we talking about?””

Richard's answer was quiet.

“Adjusted for interest and the subsequent investment returns, the account may now hold more than three hundred million dollars.””

Nobody spoke.

Ethan felt his stomach turn.

His father had supposedly diverted forty-two million dollars. If that money had been invested and allowed to grow for nearly three decades, the resulting fortune could be enormous.

“Who controls the account?”” Ethan asked.

“That's what the ledger will tell us.””

“Why haven't you recovered it yourself?””

“Because the account requires authorization from the trust's beneficiaries. I could obtain the necklace, but I couldn't open the deposit box without the original documents.””

Ethan looked at the certificate representing twenty-two percent of Carter Industries.

“And the shares?””

“They belong to the trust. If the beneficiaries establish their claims, they will receive voting rights and a financial interest in the company.””

“Which means Olivia and Victoria could control nearly a quarter of Carter Industries.””

“Correct.””

“And you intended to use them to force me out.””

Richard shook his head.

“I intended to force the truth into the open.””

“You could have done that without manipulating my marriage.””

“I could have.””

“Then why didn't you?””

Richard's answer came after a long pause.

“Because I didn't trust myself to do the right thing once I had the opportunity.””

The honesty surprised Ethan.

Richard looked at the photograph of his brother.

“I told myself I was fighting for Michael. Then I told myself I was fighting for your mother. Eventually, I stopped knowing whether I wanted justice or revenge.””

Ethan studied him.

“And now?””

“Now I want the truth to come out, even if it destroys me.””

Victoria lifted her head.

“You should have thought of that before you destroyed my life.””

Richard accepted the accusation without protest.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened for a few seconds, and then turned to Ethan.

“Margaret has confirmed the trust is real. She's also found the original court order sealing the beneficiary schedule.””

“Who filed it?””

“Your mother.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why would she seal the names?””

“Because the trust included a provision for the children of Michael Hayes. She was afraid that if the identities became public, someone would try to use the children to gain control of the shares.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“Someone like Richard.””

“Or your father,” Daniel replied.

Ethan looked at the documents again.

The pieces were finally aligning.

His mother had signed the transfer authorization. She had helped conceal the truth, then spent years trying to recover the evidence. She had created a trust to protect the rightful beneficiaries. She had hidden the key in a family heirloom.

And she had left behind a final warning.

I fear that the money was never the real secret.

Ethan turned toward Richard.

“What was the real secret?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he removed another document from the folder.

It was a copy of a letter written by Michael Hayes, dated two days before the transfer.

The letter stated that the money had originally been deposited into a temporary account to fund a rescue operation for a failing subsidiary. But the final paragraph contained something Ethan had never expected.

If anything happens to me, the person who ordered the transfer was not the only one responsible. The final authorization came from someone who had access to the company's records after the transfer was supposedly completed.

Ethan read the sentence again.

“Who had that access?””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Your mother suspected someone inside the company had continued moving the money long after your father believed the account was closed.””

“Who?””

“We don't know.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Could the account still be active?””

“Possibly,” Daniel replied.

“But we'd need the original ledger to verify that.””

Richard nodded.

“And that's why we need the necklace.””

Ethan's phone vibrated.

A message from Olivia appeared.

Big brother, where are you? I've been trying to reach you since last night. Something strange happened at the house.

Ethan called her immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

“Ethan? Thank God. Where are you?””

“Boston. What's wrong?””

“Someone broke into Mom's old study.””

His heart stopped.

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. I wasn't home when it happened. Security found the door open this morning.””

“What did they take?””

“I don't know. The police are checking.””

Ethan glanced at the documents.

“Did they touch anything else?””

Olivia hesitated.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

“What?””

“Before Mom died, she gave me a small box. She told me never to open it unless someone tried to access the old study.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Where is it?””

“In my apartment.””

“Don't touch it. Don't open it. Get security to stay with you until I return.””

“Ethan, what's happening?””

He struggled to find an answer that wouldn't frighten her.

“I'm trying to understand something Mom kept from us.””

“Is it about Dad?””

He looked at Richard.

“Yes.””

Olivia's voice grew small.

“Ethan, I found a letter in the box last night. It had my name on it.””

“What did it say?””

She began to cry.

“It said that if I ever learned who my biological father was, I should remember that he didn't abandon me.””

Ethan felt the world go quiet.

“Olivia,” he whispered, “I need you to listen to me. Whatever you discover, you're still my sister.””

“I know.””

“No. I need you to understand that nothing changes that.””

She sobbed softly.

Then she said the words that made everything worse.

“Ethan, there's a photograph in the box. It shows Mom holding me as a baby.””

He waited.

“And standing beside her is a woman I've never seen before.””

“Who?””

Olivia swallowed.

“Victoria.””

Ethan looked across the basement at his wife.

Victoria had gone completely still.

Then Olivia continued.

“Ethan, the woman in the photograph looks exactly like Victoria. But the photograph was taken before Victoria was born.””

The call ended.

Ethan stared at his phone.

Victoria's face had turned white.

Richard slowly closed the leather folder.

And from somewhere above them came the sound of a door slamming.

Daniel reached for his phone.

“Who else knows we're here?””

Richard looked toward the staircase.

Then he whispered, “Someone who has been waiting twenty-eight years for that account to be opened.””

A gunshot rang out.

May you like

The basement lights shattered.

And in the darkness, Ethan heard Victoria scream his name.
