Chapter 8: The Daughter His Father Hid
By six in the morning, the private jet was climbing above the clouds.
Ethan sat across from Victoria in the cabin's forward lounge, a tablet between them displaying the photograph of Olivia's birth certificate.
Neither had slept.
Victoria wore a dark coat over her clothes, her wedding ring still on her finger. Ethan had considered asking her to remove it, but the sight of the ring no longer angered him.
It simply reminded him how little he understood about the woman sitting opposite him.
“Where did you find this?”” he asked.
“In your mother's correspondence.””
“Which correspondence?””
“The letters she exchanged with my father. Richard had copies.””
“You said you didn't know about them.””
“I didn't. Not until last night.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“Victoria, every time I ask you a question, I discover that you've been withholding something.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Then give me the entire story. No more half-truths. No more carefully chosen details.””
Victoria looked at the birth certificate.
“My father told me that Michael Hayes had a daughter before he married my mother. He said the child was taken away and raised by another family.””
“Olivia?””
“I don't know.””
Ethan's chest tightened.
His younger sister had been born when he was nine. His parents had celebrated her arrival with a small family gathering, and his father had carried her around the house for hours.
Ethan remembered the first time Olivia had called him big brother. He had been so proud that he had spent the next week correcting anyone who referred to her as his cousin.
She was the person he called when the company overwhelmed him. The person who could make him laugh when he felt like his father's ghost was standing over his shoulder.
The idea that she might not be his biological sister was almost impossible to process.
“Did my mother know?”” he asked.
Victoria hesitated.
“According to the letters, yes.””
Ethan looked away.
“Then why didn't she tell me?””
“Maybe she was protecting Olivia.””
“From what?””
“Your father.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
He remembered his father teaching him to ride a bicycle, taking him to his first football game, and standing at the back of the room when he graduated from university. The man had been demanding, sometimes cold, but Ethan had never doubted that he loved his children.
Now every memory seemed to contain a question.
Daniel appeared from the adjoining cabin.
“We're twenty minutes out,” he said.
“And I've got an update from Margaret.””
Ethan turned.
“What is it?””
“She found the trust's original registration number. The document was filed in Massachusetts, not New York. The beneficiary's identity was sealed under a court order.””
“Can she unseal it?””
“Not without a judge.””
Victoria looked up.
“Then the storage unit is our only chance.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Maybe. But there's something else. The original trust was established by three people, not two.””
Ethan frowned.
“My father and mother?””
“And Michael Hayes.””
Victoria's hand flew to her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“The trust wasn't simply a way to protect money. It was established to hold the shares until a disputed inheritance could be resolved. The documents suggest that Michael was granted a beneficiary's interest in exchange for surrendering his claim against Carter Industries.””
“Why would he agree to that?”” Ethan asked.
“According to the filing, he believed the money would be returned and his name cleared.””
Victoria looked at Ethan.
“My father trusted your mother.””
“And my father used that trust to bury the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's what it looks like.””
Ethan stared at the birth certificate.
“If Olivia is Michael's daughter, then she might be the beneficiary.””
“Or she might be one of several people with a claim,” Daniel replied.
“We won't know until we see the original documents.””
Victoria's voice was barely audible.
“Richard told me the trust belonged to him.””
Ethan turned sharply.
“What?””
“He said Michael had agreed to transfer his interest to Richard before leaving the country.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because he showed me a signed letter.””
“Where is it?””
“Richard has it.””
Ethan looked at her for a long moment.
“Or he forged it.””
Victoria's face tightened.
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds like you married me based on information supplied by a man who has been manipulating you for years.””
She lowered her head.
“I think you're right.””
The admission settled between them.
For the first time, Ethan saw no attempt to defend herself, no accusation against his family, no carefully arranged tears.
Only shame.
It didn't erase what she had done.
But it made him wonder whether the woman he had loved had been both his betrayer and another person's victim.
The old Carter building stood on a quiet street near Boston's waterfront.
It had once housed the company's original manufacturing offices, back when Ethan's grandfather employed fewer than fifty people. Now the windows were boarded, the brickwork was stained by years of weather, and a rusted sign hung above the entrance.
CARTER INDUSTRIES — EST. 1948.
Ethan stepped out of the car and looked up.
“My mother brought me here once,” he said.
Victoria stood beside him.
“What happened?””
“She said we were visiting a friend. My father arrived an hour later and ordered us to leave.””
“Did he explain why?””
“No.””
Ethan looked at the building.
“I remember my mother crying in the car. She told me that some secrets became dangerous when people were afraid to lose what they had.””
Victoria's eyes filled.
“My father said something similar.””
Daniel approached carrying a small equipment case.
“Before either of you gets emotional about the architecture, we should remember that your uncle may have people watching this building.””
“Then we won't give them time to react,” Ethan said.
They entered through a side door using the brass key Marcus had recovered.
Inside, dust covered the floor. Old filing cabinets lined the walls, and the smell of damp paper hung in the air.
Ethan switched on his flashlight.
“Where do we start?””
Victoria pointed toward the back of the building.
“My father told me that the old storage units were in the basement.””
They descended a narrow staircase.
At the bottom stood a row of metal lockers, each bearing a faded number.
Locker 17 had a brass keyhole.
Ethan inserted the key.
It turned.
Inside was a metal box, a stack of old documents, and a cassette recorder.
Daniel examined the box.
“Looks like someone prepared this for us.””
Ethan opened it.
The first document was a ledger listing financial transfers between Carter Industries and several offshore companies. Each entry included dates, account numbers, and initials.
He recognized his father's signature immediately.
The second signature belonged to Michael Hayes.
The third belonged to Richard Carter.
And the final column contained the initials *V.H.*
Victoria stepped backward.
“My father used those initials,” she whispered.
Ethan turned the page.
The ledger recorded a transfer of $42 million into a holding company established twenty-eight years earlier. The company had been dissolved on paper, but the final entry showed that its assets had been transferred into the Carter Legacy Trust.
Beneath the entry was a note.
Beneficial ownership to be determined upon presentation of the original authorization.
Daniel picked up another document.
“Ethan, look at this.””
It was a share certificate.
Twenty-two percent of Carter Industries.
The certificate was dated six months before Ethan's birth and listed the trust as its registered owner.
On the reverse was a handwritten condition.
The shares shall remain under protective administration until the identity of the rightful beneficiary is confirmed.
Ethan looked at Victoria.
“Who is V.H.?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
But her face had gone pale.
Daniel opened the metal box's final compartment.
Inside was a small audio cassette and a photograph of Ethan's father standing with a woman outside a hospital.
The woman was pregnant.
Ethan recognized her immediately.
It was Michael Hayes's wife.
On the back of the photograph, his mother had written:
The night Olivia was born.
Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.
Olivia's birth certificate listed his mother as her biological mother. The photograph suggested otherwise.
“Play the recording,” he said.
Daniel found the cassette recorder and pressed the button.
Static filled the basement.
Then a familiar voice emerged.
Ethan's father's voice.
“If this recording is ever discovered, the company will be destroyed. You understand that, Richard?””
Another man answered.
“I understand what you've done. I don't understand why you keep pretending it's for the family.””
“Everything I did was to protect the family.””
“You stole money from the company and blamed Michael.””
“I saved the company.””
“You destroyed an innocent man.””
“He signed the documents.””
“Because you told him they were temporary!””
A chair scraped against the floor.
Then Ethan's father spoke again.
“And what would you have had me do? Let the company collapse? Let hundreds of people lose their jobs? Let my children grow up with nothing?””
“You could have told the truth.””
“And handed control to the board? You think they'd have forgiven me?””
Richard's voice grew quieter.
“Michael has a daughter.””
Silence.
Then Ethan's father spoke.
“I know.””
“She's entitled to the trust.””
“She is entitled to nothing until the matter is resolved.””
“She is a child.””
“And she will remain a child. She will have a family, a home, and every opportunity I can provide.””
“Under a false identity?””
“I will raise her as my own.””
Ethan stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at him.
The recording continued.
Richard's voice was trembling with anger.
“You can't erase her past.””
“I can protect her from it.””
“By making her believe she's your daughter?””
“By making sure she never has to live with the consequences of her father's mistakes.””
Richard gave a bitter laugh.
“Or by making sure she never discovers what she's entitled to inherit.””
The recording ended abruptly.
Nobody moved.
Then Victoria whispered, “Olivia.””
Ethan stared at the cassette recorder.
His sister was Michael Hayes's daughter.
His father had raised her as his own.
His mother had known.
And the trust that held twenty-two percent of Carter Industries might have belonged to Olivia all along.
A sound came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Slow. Deliberate.
Daniel reached for his phone.
Ethan switched off his flashlight.
A man's voice echoed through the basement.
“I was wondering how long it would take you to find it.””
Richard Carter stepped into the room.
He looked older than Ethan remembered from the photographs, with silver hair, deep lines around his mouth, and the same dark eyes that appeared in every Carter family portrait.
He wore an immaculate suit and held a leather folder beneath one arm.
His gaze moved from Ethan to Victoria, then to the open metal box.
“You shouldn't have come here,” he said.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You stole my mother's necklace.””
Richard's expression didn't change.
“I recovered something that belonged to me.””
“You manipulated my wife.””
“I gave her a chance to recover what her father lost.””
“You used her to get control of my company.””
Richard sighed.
“Ethan, you still believe this is about money.””
He placed the leather folder on the table.
“It's about the truth. Your father built his empire on a lie, and your mother spent the rest of her life trying to repair it.””
“Then why did you help him hide it?””
Richard's eyes darkened.
“Because I was a coward.””
The answer silenced Ethan.
Richard looked at the photograph of the pregnant woman.
“Your father wasn't the only person who made mistakes. I signed the documents. I helped move the money. And when Michael tried to expose us, I chose my brother over the truth.””
“Then why come back now?””
“Because the trust is about to become active again.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at Victoria.
“Because someone has finally married into the Carter family without knowing what the marriage would unlock.””
Victoria went pale.
Ethan's voice hardened.
“Explain.””
Richard opened the folder and removed a document.
It was a copy of the Carter Legacy Trust's original beneficiary schedule.
Three names appeared on the page.
Ethan Carter.
Olivia Carter.
And a third name, handwritten in blue ink.
*Victoria Hayes.*
Ethan stared at the document.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Richard looked from one to the other.
“Your mother didn't simply protect Michael's daughter,” he said.
“She made sure his other child would have a claim, too.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No. That's impossible.””
Richard's expression was grim.
“Michael Hayes had two children. One was taken in by your family. The other was raised by his wife.””
Ethan looked at Victoria.
For the first time, he understood why Richard had insisted she marry him.
Not simply to find the ledger.
Not simply to recover the necklace.
But because the marriage itself might trigger a clause in the trust.
Richard placed another document on the table.
“The six-month provision is not a deadline for stealing Ethan's money,” he said.
“It's the period during which the trust allows the beneficiaries to establish their claims before the voting rights are reassigned.””
Victoria's knees nearly buckled.
“Then what was I supposed to do?””
Richard looked at her.
“Exactly what I told you. Marry Ethan. Secure the documents. And wait.””
Ethan's hands curled into fists.
“You planned to use my marriage to transfer control of my company.””
Richard met his gaze.
“I planned to restore what was stolen.””
“You planned to manipulate every person in this room.””
Richard didn't deny it.
Then he looked at Victoria.
“And there's something else you need to know about your father.””
He removed one final photograph from the folder.
It showed Michael Hayes standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby.
On the back, someone had written a date and a name.
*Victoria Hayes — Biological Mother: Unknown.*
Victoria stared at the photograph.
“That isn't possible.””
Richard's voice softened.
“Your father wasn't the man you believed he was, Victoria. And neither was your mother.””
He turned the photograph over.
“The woman who raised you wasn't your biological mother.””
Victoria took a step backward.
Ethan watched her face collapse.
May you like
Then Richard delivered the final blow.
“Your biological mother was Olivia's mother. Which means you and Olivia are sisters.””
