Chapter 5 - THE HIDDEN SECRET

That night I could not sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Julian’s face—desperate, warning me to stop. I saw the unknown text threatening my legs. I saw the pattern forming: insider knowledge, careful timing, a plan years in the making.
At dawn I asked Sarah to bring me everything she could find about Gareth.
By mid-morning she returned carrying a box of documents, her expression grim.
“I had to pull strings to get these,” she said, setting the box on the table where I could see. “Court records. Old corporate filings. Letters your father wrote to a trusted associate shortly before his death. And… this.”
She held up a sealed envelope, its paper yellowed with age. The handwriting on the front was unmistakably my father’s.
*To Genevieve. To be opened only if Vance Development is threatened from within the family.*
My hands trembled as I broke the seal.
The letter was dated barely a week before his fatal heart attack.
*My dearest Genevieve,* it began. If you are reading this, it means the worst has come to pass. Gareth has returned. I always feared he would. He did not vanish all those years ago. I paid him to leave the country, to stay away, but I knew money would never satisfy him. He wants what he believes belongs to him—my company, my land, everything I built. He is patient. He is cruel. And he uses people to do his dirty work. Julian… Julian is weak. Gareth found him years ago, groomed him, encouraged him to marry you, all so Julian would be in position to take control when the moment came. Protect the trust documents. Protect yourself. And remember—the trust has one final clause I never told anyone. If you are ever incapacitated or unjustly deprived of your authority, full ownership and control passes immediately to Hazel, held in your name as her guardian. They do not know this. It is your greatest weapon. Trust no one but Sarah. And be careful, my daughter. Gareth does not play fair. He will destroy anyone who stands in his way.
I lowered the letter. Tears blurred the words.
My father had known. He had suspected everything. And he had died before he could warn me face-to-face.
Sarah leaned forward. “Julian married you because Gareth told him to. All those sweet words, all those romantic gestures… they were planned. Calculated. He has been working toward this moment for years—waiting for you to become vulnerable enough to strip of everything.”
“And my paralysis,” I said, my voice hollow. “Was it truly an accident?”
Sarah went quiet. “The surgeon said it was a known risk of the procedure. Rare… but possible. Gen… I will order a full independent review of every step of your surgery and anesthesia. Every drug administered. Every monitoring note. If someone tampered with anything… we will find it.”
I gripped my father’s letter tight in my hand.
Gareth. The brother-in-law I had never met. The shadow behind every betrayal. He had orchestrated my marriage. He had waited years. And now, believing me helpless, he had made his move.
But he had made two mistakes.
He had not known about my father’s letter. And he had not known about the clause that gave me control in Hazel’s name—power that even he could not legally strip away.
“Sarah,” I said, lifting my head. “Bring me the trust. File the necessary paperwork. Announce publicly that I am acting on Hazel’s behalf as trustee and guardian. Let Gareth know… his plan failed. And tell Julian… I know who his master is.”
Sarah hesitated. “If we show our hand this early—”
“Let them think I am stronger than they realize,” I said. “Let them worry about what else my father may have left me. Fear will make them careless. And careless enemies make mistakes.”
Sarah nodded slowly. “I will have it filed by noon.”
She left the room. I looked down at Hazel, sleeping soundly, completely unaware that men had plotted for years to use her and her mother as pawns.
Gareth thought he had already won. He thought I was defeated, helpless, easy to crush.

He had no idea.
I was Genevieve Vance. My father’s daughter. And I had just begun to fight.
