Chapter 4 - THE CONFRONTATION

Three days later, Julian returned. This time he came alone, formally, with what appeared to be legal documents in hand. He asked permission to enter, and Sarah nodded—letting him, but remaining standing close beside me, phone in hand, recording once again.

He stopped a few feet from the bed, his expression polished, professional, a mask of concern that fooled no one now.

“I have come to discuss terms,” he said, placing papers on the bedside table without taking his eyes off me. “Call off the criminal complaints. Drop the restraining orders. Surrender management of the company to me during your recovery. And I will ensure you and Hazel are cared for generously.”

“Cared for like a prisoner?” I asked, my voice steady. “Like Eleanor cared for me when she slapped me and threatened my child?”

Julian’s jaw tightened. “Mother acted out of concern. She has your best interests—”

“Stop,” I cut him off. “Do not speak to me of concern. You walked into this room with another woman. You tried to steal everything I built. You threatened to take my daughter. And someone sent you medical information before I even had time to process the diagnosis. Tell me, Julian… who is really pulling your strings?”

His eyes flickered—just for a moment—and in that split second I saw it. Fear. Not of me. But of whoever stood behind him.

“I do not know what you are talking about,” he said, but his voice lacked conviction.

“Someone warned you,” I pressed on. “Someone with access. Someone powerful. Eleanor is cruel, but she is not clever enough to arrange medical leaks and timed conspiracies. Who told you, Julian? Who are you so afraid of that you would sell your own soul—and betray your wife—to please them?”

For a long silence he said nothing. He stared at the wall, his hands clasped tight until the knuckles whitened. Then he leaned forward, his voice dropping to a raw, urgent whisper.

“Walk away, Genevieve. Please. Drop everything. Sign over what they want and walk away while you still can. You do not know who you are fighting. They have waited years for this moment. They will not let a recording or a lawsuit stop them.”

“Who?” I demanded. “Tell me their names.”

“I cannot,” he said, and there was genuine despair in his voice. “If I speak… Hazel will never be safe. You will never be safe. Just… give them what they want. It is the only way to survive.”

He turned as if to leave, and something in me snapped. All the betrayal, all the pain, all the terror of lying helpless while my husband and his mistress loomed over me—it all surged forward.

“Julian!”

He paused at the door.

“Whoever they are,” I said, meeting his gaze without flinching. “They made one mistake. They thought I was helpless. They thought I would break. Tell them this—I am not giving them anything. Not my company. Not my daughter. Not my life. And I will find out who they are. Every single one. And I will bring them all down.”

Julian stared at me. For an instant I thought he might say more. That he might finally confess. Then his expression hardened back into that cold mask.

“Then God help you, Genevieve,” he said quietly. “Because they will not.”

He walked out.

Sarah immediately stepped to the window, watching him go. “He is terrified. That was not an act. Whatever hold they have over him… it runs deep.”

“Or perhaps he is protecting someone,” I said slowly. “He said ‘they’… but he also spoke as if there is one person above all others. The one truly in charge.”

Sarah turned back to me, her face serious.

“Gen… Julian has a brother. An older brother no one speaks about. Gareth. He vanished years ago. Your father had him removed from the company and erased from all records.”

I froze. I had heard the name once or twice, in passing whispers. Julian hated even mentioning him.

“Why would my father remove him?”

Sarah hesitated.

“From what little I could find… Gareth was dangerous. Ruthless. And your father believed he was plotting to destroy Vance Development from the inside. Gen… what if he never left? What if he has been waiting all these years… using Julian to get what he wants?”

The room seemed to tilt.

Everything Julian had said. The secrecy. The fear. The medical leak that required insider knowledge. It all suddenly fit.

I had thought I was fighting my husband and his mother. But the real enemy… had been hidden in plain sight all along.
