Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Was Protecting
Daniel didn’t remember leaving his mother’s house.
He remembered the photograph.
He remembered Marcus standing in the hospital hallway.
He remembered the missing page in his hand.
But everything after that felt blurred.
Like his mind had reached a point where it refused to accept anything else.
Marcus.
The man who had stood beside Claire on their wedding day.
The man who had called him brother.
The man who had encouraged him to hire Sabrina.
The man who had spent years pretending to protect his family.
He had the missing page.
And he had been there the night Daniel’s father died.
When Daniel arrived home, Claire was waiting.
One look at his face told her everything.
“What happened?””
Daniel walked inside.
He didn’t answer.
Claire followed.
“Daniel.””
He stopped in the living room.
“Marcus was there.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
“The night my father died.””
Her expression changed.
“How do you know?””
“My mother.””
Daniel handed her the phone.
She looked at the photograph.
The silence that followed was different.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You knew.””
Claire looked up.
“I suspected.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Please don’t.””
“What?””
“Don’t say that.””
His voice was exhausted.
“Not again.””
Claire understood.
Everyone had known something.
Everyone had carried pieces.
Everyone except him.
She lowered the phone.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because you’re right.””
The honesty surprised him.
“I should have told you.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Claire sat down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if I gave you every piece at once, you would only see betrayal.””
Daniel looked away.
“What else am I supposed to see?””
Claire stood.
“You need to understand something.””
She stepped closer.
“Not everyone who hid something from you was trying to hurt you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then what were they doing?””
“Trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
Claire hesitated.
And that hesitation told him there was still another secret.
“Claire.””
She sighed.
“Me.””
Daniel stared.
“You?””
She nodded.
“Marcus wasn’t protecting himself.””
“Then who?””
“Me.””
The room became silent.
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
Claire walked to the cabinet and pulled out an old envelope.
Another one.
Another secret.
She handed it to him.
“I found this with my father’s things.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Claire,
If Marcus ever finds out the truth, he will blame Daniel.
Daniel stopped.
He looked at Claire.
“What truth?””
She looked away.
He did.
He has spent his entire life believing his father was perfect. He will not accept what happened easily.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
But Daniel was not responsible for the choices his father made.
Neither was Claire.
He looked up.
“Why does this mention me?””
Claire’s voice was quiet.
“Because our fathers knew something about us.””
“What?””
“That we were connected.””
Daniel shook his head.
“We already know that.””
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“We don’t.””
She took a breath.
“Daniel, my father wasn’t just your father’s rival.””
“Then what was he?””
“He was his closest friend.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“They started their companies together.””
That changed everything.
“They weren’t enemies?””
“Not at first.””
Claire sat down.
“They became enemies after someone stole from them.””
“Who?””
“We still don’t know.””
Daniel looked back at the letter.
“But Marcus thought my father did it.””
“Yes.””
“And Sabrina?””
Claire nodded.
“Marcus believed if he destroyed your reputation, he would destroy everything your father built.””
Daniel felt sick.
“So he used Sabrina.””
“Yes.””
“But why did Sabrina agree?””
A painful expression crossed Claire’s face.
“Because Marcus lied to her too.””
The next morning, Daniel and Claire went to see Sabrina.
Not because they trusted her.
Because they needed the truth.
She was waiting in a small apartment on the edge of the city.
When she opened the door, she looked nervous.
“You came.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“Tell us everything.””
Sabrina nodded.
“I will.””
She looked at Claire.
“I owe you that.””
Claire said nothing.
Sabrina sat down.
“Marcus told me Daniel ruined his family.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“He told you my father destroyed his?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
Sabrina looked ashamed.
“At first.””
“Why?””
“Because he showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records.””
Daniel frowned.
“Fake?””
Sabrina nodded.
“Now I know.””
She looked down.
“But at the time, I thought I was helping someone get justice.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“You thought sleeping with me was justice?””
Sabrina flinched.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I knew it was wrong.””
Claire looked at her.
“Then why continue?””
Sabrina looked away.
“Because at some point, Marcus stopped being the reason.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Because I started believing you cared about me.””
The words landed heavily.
Daniel looked down.
That was the part he hated most.
Not because Sabrina was right.
Because he knew there had been moments when he enjoyed the attention.
The escape.
The feeling of being admired.
“You were wrong.””
“I know.””
Sabrina nodded.
“But I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“Marcus never wanted you and Claire to divorce.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“He wanted something else.””
“What?””
Sabrina looked directly at him.
“He wanted you to destroy yourself.””
Daniel felt cold.
“Why?””
“Because your father did.””
Silence.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Sabrina continued.
“Marcus believed your father ruined his father’s life.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at Claire.
“But Marcus never learned the truth.””
Daniel stood.
“Where is he now?””
Sabrina hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“He knows we know.””
When Daniel and Claire returned home, Marcus was waiting.
Standing in their driveway.
Alone.
No anger.
No threats.
Just exhaustion.
Daniel stepped out of the car.
“You have the page.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Give it to me.””
Marcus looked at Claire.
Then back at Daniel.
“I was hoping you would never find out.””
Daniel laughed.
“You spent years trying to destroy my life.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
“No?””
“I spent years trying to punish the person I thought destroyed mine.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And now?””
Marcus looked older than Daniel had ever seen him.
“Now I know I was wrong.””
“Convenient.””
Marcus reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
The missing page.
Daniel stared.
“Why now?””
Marcus looked at Claire.
“Because your father was right.””
Daniel took the page.
“What does it say?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Read it.””
Daniel unfolded it.
The handwriting was his father’s.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then Marcus has finally learned the truth.
Daniel looked up.
Marcus looked away.
He continued.
The person who betrayed us was not Robert. It was not me.
Daniel’s heart raced.
It was someone who had access to both families.
The next line made him stop.
Someone who knew our children would be the easiest way to continue the hatred.
Daniel read faster.
I discovered the truth too late.
I know who did this.
And I know why.
A name appeared.
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
Because the person responsible wasn’t Marcus.
Wasn’t Sabrina.
Wasn’t Claire.
It was someone who had been beside him his entire life.
Someone he had trusted without question.
Someone who had always said they were protecting him.
Daniel looked up slowly.
Claire saw his face.
“What is it?””
He couldn’t answer.
Because the final sentence on the page explained everything.
Daniel, if you ever learn the truth, remember this.
The person who hurts you the most may not be the person who hates you.
It may be the person who loves you enough to lie.
Daniel looked at the name again.
And his voice came out barely above a whisper.
“No…”
Claire stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel handed her the paper.
Her eyes moved down.
Then widened.
Because the truth they had spent years chasing was finally there.
And it was impossible.
The person who had destroyed both families…
The person who had hidden the evidence…
The person who had manipulated everyone…
May you like
Was *Evelyn Mercer.*
Daniel’s mother.
