Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Sabrina’s Smile
Daniel stared at the photograph.
For a moment, his brain refused to process what his eyes were seeing.
Sabrina.
Standing beside someone he trusted.
Someone who had been welcomed into his home.
Someone who had shared holidays with him and Claire.
Someone who had smiled at him across the dinner table while carrying a secret.
His hand tightened around the picture.
“No.””
Victoria watched him carefully.
“I know.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
“You knew about this?””
“I knew there was a connection.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Victoria sighed.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
The image was old.
The colors had faded slightly.
But there was no mistake.
Sabrina Keller was standing beside his brother-in-law, Marcus Bennett.
Claire’s older brother.
The man who had given a speech at Daniel and Claire’s wedding.
The man who had called Daniel family.
The man who had hugged him after his father died.
Daniel felt sick.
“Why would Marcus be with Sabrina?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
She took a breath.
“Because Marcus introduced her to you.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“You thought you met Sabrina through work.””
“I did.””
“You thought she was just another consultant.””
“She was.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No, Daniel.””
She looked at the photograph.
“She was never just another consultant.””
Three years earlier.
Daniel remembered the first time Sabrina entered his life.
It had been during a major business project.
His firm had landed a contract that could change everything.
Marcus had been the one who suggested her.
“You need someone sharp,” Marcus had said over dinner.
Daniel remembered Claire sitting beside him.
“You trust her?””
Marcus smiled.
“Completely.””
Those words came back now.
Completely.
Daniel had trusted Marcus because Claire trusted Marcus.
He had never questioned him.
Why would he?
Marcus was family.
Daniel had always believed family was the one thing in his life that was honest.
Apparently, he had been wrong.
“Tell me everything,” Daniel said.
Victoria nodded.
“Marcus and Sabrina knew each other before you met her.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you what Claire found.””
Daniel froze.
“Claire found this too?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she confronted you.””
The pattern was becoming clear.
Claire had spent months collecting pieces.
While Daniel was busy protecting his lies, his wife had been uncovering truths he never knew existed.
“What did she think?””
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“That Sabrina wasn’t the real problem.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Claire believed someone was using Sabrina.””
Daniel looked at the picture again.
“Marcus?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Daniel drove to Claire’s office that afternoon.
He had called three times.
She hadn’t answered.
That scared him more than anger would have.
Before, Claire always answered.
Even when she was upset.
Even when they fought.
She always came back.
Now she was becoming someone he couldn’t reach.
When he arrived, the receptionist looked surprised.
“Mr. Mercer?””
Daniel nodded.
“I need to see Claire.””
The woman hesitated.
“She’s in a meeting.””
“With who?””
The receptionist looked at her computer.
“Marcus Bennett.””
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
Of course.
He walked away before he could think.
His first instinct was to storm inside.
Demand answers.
Accuse.
Fight.
But then he stopped.
That was the old Daniel.
The man who reacted before understanding.
The man who protected his pride before protecting his marriage.
He stood outside the conference room door.
And listened.
“I didn’t think he would find out this way.””
Marcus’s voice.
Daniel felt his hands curl into fists.
Claire answered.
“He had to know eventually.””
“You could have told him.””
“No.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because I wanted to see if he would choose honesty without being forced.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The words hurt.
Because he knew she was right.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“You’re still protecting him.””
“I’m protecting the truth.””
“You’re protecting someone who betrayed you.””
Silence.
Then Claire said something Daniel never expected.
“I know.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
Marcus continued.
“You still love him.””
A long pause.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Then Claire answered.
“I don’t know.””
That hurt more than anything.
Because it wasn’t a no.
But it wasn’t a yes.
It was uncertainty.
And Daniel had created that.
The door opened suddenly.
Marcus stepped out.
He froze when he saw Daniel.
For one second, neither man spoke.
Then Marcus’s face hardened.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Were you using me?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You introduced me to Sabrina.””
“Daniel—”
“You brought her into my life.””
Marcus glanced around.
“This isn’t the place.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“That’s the difference between us.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
“I spent years hiding things from Claire.””
Daniel shook his head.
“But you don’t even seem embarrassed.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Be careful.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“It’s advice.””
The anger inside Daniel rose.
“You knew what she was doing.””
Marcus looked away.
“You’re not asking the right questions.””
Daniel stared.
“Then tell me the right ones.””
Marcus was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Ask yourself why Sabrina chose you.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Ask yourself why someone like Sabrina would want a married man.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I know why.””
“Do you?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because you were successful?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Because you were powerful?””
Still nothing.
“Because you had money?””
The words landed.
Daniel hated that they sounded familiar.
Because they were the same fears he had carried for years.
That people only valued him for what he built.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Sabrina wasn’t interested in you.””
Daniel’s heart raced.
“Then what was she interested in?””
Marcus looked toward the conference room.
“At what you had.””
That night, Daniel went home and found Claire sitting in the living room.
She looked tired.
But she didn’t look surprised to see him.
“You heard.””
Daniel stopped.
“How?””
“Marcus texted me.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Of course he did.””
Claire looked at him.
“What happened?””
Daniel held up the photograph.
Her expression changed.
“You found it.””
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Claire looked down.
“A few weeks.””
Daniel sat across from her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted to know if you would finally see it yourself.””
He looked hurt.
“That sounds cruel.””
Claire nodded.
“It does.””
A pause.
“But do you know what was cruel?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Watching you come home every night and convince yourself you weren’t hurting me.””
He looked away.
Claire continued.
“You thought the affair was the biggest betrayal.””
She shook her head.
“It wasn’t.””
“Then what was?””
“You stopped caring whether I was lonely.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel had no defense.
Because she was right.
He had been so focused on Sabrina.
So focused on what he wanted.
That he never noticed Claire had already been alone.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Did you ever love Sabrina?””
The question surprised him.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Claire studied his face.
“Then why?””
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
And for the first time, he realized that was the truth.
Not a lie.
Not an excuse.
He truly didn’t know.
Claire nodded slowly.
“That’s what scares me.””
“Why?””
“Because if you don’t know why you destroyed something…”
She looked toward the wedding photo on the shelf.
“How do I know you won’t do it again?””
Daniel felt the weight of that question.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then Claire looked at the screen.
“Answer it.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then picked up.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
A voice he recognized immediately.
Sabrina.
“Daniel.””
His entire body went still.
“What do you want?””
Her voice shook.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
Daniel stood.
“About what?””
A pause.
Then Sabrina whispered:
“About Marcus.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
His wife was watching him carefully.
“What about Marcus?””
Sabrina’s voice became quieter.
“He’s not the person you think he is.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.
“Explain.””
Another pause.
Then Sabrina said the words that changed everything.
“Marcus didn’t introduce me to you because he wanted to help your business.””
Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.
“Why then?””
Sabrina answered.
“Because he wanted me close enough to destroy your marriage.””
The line went silent.
And before Daniel could ask another question, Sabrina added one final sentence.
“Daniel… your wife was never his target.””
A chill ran through him.
“Then who was?””
May you like
Sabrina whispered:
“You.””
