Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The photograph sat on the table like a ghost.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody wanted to be the first person to accept what it meant.
Thomas Bennett.
Lily stared at the name written on the back.
She knew that name.
Everyone in the Bennett family knew that name.
Her grandfather.
Daniel’s father.
A man Lily had been told died before she was born.
A man whose portrait hung in the old study upstairs.
A man who had become nothing more than a story.
Until tonight.
“That's impossible,” Daniel whispered.
Margaret looked at him.
“I wish it was.””
Daniel picked up the photograph with shaking hands.
His fingers trembled as he turned it over again.
The image didn’t change.
The man standing beside the car was still there.
Older.
Cold-eyed.
Watching.
Watching the moment that changed Lily’s life forever.
“Where did you get this?”” Daniel asked.
Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Your wife gave it to me.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Sarah?””
She nodded.
“She knew.””
Clara stepped closer.
“She knew Thomas was alive?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“She discovered it weeks before the accident.””
The room went silent.
Rebecca suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Not scared.
Not surprised.
Uncomfortable.
Lily noticed.
“You knew.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“What?””
“You knew about him.””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
And Lily’s heart sank.
Everyone had been lying.
Everyone.
Daniel saw the expression on his daughter’s face.
“Lily…”
She looked at him.
“Did everyone know except me?””
The question broke him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Yes.””
Her voice was small.
“But everyone knew something.””
Daniel had no defense.
Because she was right.
Lily looked down at her wheelchair.
For years, she had wondered why life had happened to her.
Why her mother disappeared.
Why her father became distant.
Why people whispered around her.
Why every adult seemed to know a story she wasn’t allowed to hear.
Now she finally understood.
The truth wasn’t hidden because it didn’t exist.
It was hidden because too many people were afraid of it.
Detective Miller looked at Margaret.
“Tell us everything.””
Margaret took a deep breath.
“Thomas Bennett never died.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How?””
“Your father arranged for people to believe he was gone.””
“Why?””
Margaret looked at the photograph.
“Because Thomas was not the victim everyone thought he was.””
Clara crossed her arms.
“What was he?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she answered.
“Powerful.””
The word sounded dangerous.
“He built the company before Daniel inherited it. He controlled everything. The employees.
The money. The people around him.””
Daniel looked angry.
“He was retired.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“He was hiding.””
“From what?””
“From Sarah.””
Everyone went quiet.
Lily frowned.
“Why would Mommy be looking for him?””
Margaret looked at her.
“Because your mother discovered he was still controlling the company from the shadows.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“But he hated the company.””
“No.””
Margaret’s voice softened.
“He hated losing control.””
The room became colder.
Detective Miller looked through the documents.
“This explains the financial fraud.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Your father wasn’t trying to destroy the company.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then what was he doing?””
Marcus answered:
“Taking it back.””
A silence followed.
Lily looked at the photograph again.
“Was he trying to hurt Mommy?””
Nobody responded immediately.
Then Margaret whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Lily gripped the armrests.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, Mommy was nice.””
Margaret’s expression broke.
“That was exactly why Sarah was dangerous to him.””
“Because she was nice?””
“Because she was brave.””
Clara looked at Rebecca.
“And Rebecca?””
Everyone turned.
Rebecca’s face hardened.
Margaret looked at her.
“She was Thomas’s connection inside the family.””
Daniel stared.
“No.””
Rebecca laughed.
A sharp, bitter laugh.
“You really believed I just appeared in your life?””
Daniel went still.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You think meeting me was a coincidence?””
Lily felt sick.
Daniel whispered:
“Rebecca…”
She stepped closer.
“Your father introduced us.””
The room froze.
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
“He wanted someone close to you.””
Rebecca smiled.
“Someone who could watch.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Rebecca’s voice became colder.
“I was supposed to be your wife before I ever became your enemy.””
Lily looked at her.
“You married Daddy because of him?””
Rebecca looked away.
“At first.””
Everyone noticed those two words.
At first.
Daniel stared.
“Then what?””
For a second, Rebecca looked human.
Almost regretful.
Then the mask returned.
“Then I realized Thomas wasn’t the only person who wanted control.””
Margaret frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked around the room.
“You all think I’m the villain because I wanted Sarah’s place.””
Nobody answered.
“Maybe I did.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Maybe I hated that everyone loved her.””
Lily listened.
Rebecca looked at her.
“Your mother walked into every room and people trusted her.””
A strange sadness appeared on Rebecca’s face.
“She didn’t have to try.””
Then it disappeared.
“But Thomas was worse.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You worked with him.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her answer surprised everyone.
“Because he threatened me.””
Silence.
Lily blinked.
“What?””
Rebecca looked down.
“He had proof of things I had done before I met you.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What things?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
Detective Miller stepped forward.
“Financial crimes.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Small ones.””
“Fraud is fraud.””
She ignored him.
“Thomas knew everything.””
Clara studied her.
“So you were trapped.””
Rebecca laughed.
“Don’t feel sorry for me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because for the first time, Rebecca wasn’t asking for sympathy.
She was admitting something.
“I did terrible things.””
She looked at Lily.
“I hurt you.””
Lily stared.
The apology never came.
Not fully.
But the honesty was there.
And somehow that was worse.
Rebecca continued.
“But I didn’t cause the accident.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then who did?””
Before she could answer, the lights went out.
The house plunged into darkness.
Lily gasped.
Someone moved.
A chair scraped.
Then glass shattered somewhere near the kitchen.
“Everyone stay where you are,” Detective Miller ordered.
A flashlight turned on.
Daniel immediately reached for Lily.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
The flashlight moved.
A figure stood near the doorway.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
Lily couldn’t see his face clearly.
But Daniel could.
His expression changed instantly.
Because he knew.
“Thomas.””
The figure stepped forward.
The man from the photograph.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Lily’s grandfather.
Thomas Bennett.
He looked at the room filled with secrets and evidence.
Then his eyes landed on Lily.
And instead of anger…
He smiled.
A smile that made her blood run cold.
“Hello, Lily.””
She backed away.
“How do you know my name?””
Thomas tilted his head.
“Because I’ve been watching you since the day you were born.””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Stay away from her.””
Thomas looked amused.
“Still pretending you’re a protector?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Thomas looked around the room.
“You all think you know what happened.””
His eyes moved to Rebecca.
“To Daniel.””
“To Sarah.””
Then back to Lily.
“But you don’t.””
Lily’s voice shook.
“What did you do to my mommy?””
Thomas smiled faintly.
And his answer made every person in the room freeze.
“I didn’t take your mother away.””
He looked directly at Daniel.
“Your father did.””
Daniel went pale.
“No…”
Thomas continued.
“And Sarah knew the truth.””
He took one step closer.
“That’s why she left you one final message.””
Lily’s heart stopped.
“Where?””
Thomas smiled.
“Hidden somewhere only you could find.””
He reached into his coat.
Then placed a small object on the table.
A key.
An old key with a number engraved on it.
Lily stared.
Because she recognized it.
It was the same number her mother had written on the back of a childhood photograph.
A number Lily had never understood.
Until now.
Thomas whispered:
“The truth about your mother’s disappearance is locked away.””
He looked at Daniel.
“And when Lily opens it…”
May you like
His smile disappeared.
“…she will finally learn who really destroyed this family.””
