Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Everything

The footsteps stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even breathed normally.

The stranger stepped into the light, and Lily immediately noticed something strange.

He looked like someone who had spent years running from the same nightmare.

He was tall, thin, and dressed in a dark coat that looked old and worn. His face carried deep lines, not from age alone, but from regret.

In his hand was a small black notebook.

Rebecca stared at him.

Her lips parted.

“No…”

The man looked at her with tired eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face changed.

He recognized him.

“You.””

The stranger looked at Daniel.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Lily looked at her father.

“You know him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared her more than anything.

Because her father always had an answer.

Even when the answer was painful.

Even when the answer was difficult.

But now?

He looked like a man watching his entire past walk back into his life.

Clara stepped forward.

“Who is he?””

The man looked at her.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

Rebecca’s expression became almost angry.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus gave a small, bitter smile.

“I heard that a lot five years ago.””

Lily watched Rebecca carefully.

She noticed the same thing again.

Rebecca wasn’t acting like someone who had just met a stranger.

She was acting like someone who had lost control of a secret.

Marcus looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on Lily.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“You’re Sarah’s daughter.””

Lily felt a strange ache in her chest.

Everyone kept saying her mother’s name like it was something sacred.

Like Sarah was a person who existed everywhere except in her memories.

“Yes,” Lily whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“She would be so happy to see you.””

Lily’s eyes filled.

“You knew my mommy?””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

“Were you her friend?””

The question seemed to hurt him.

“I was.””

Lily tilted her head.

“But everyone who was Mommy’s friend keeps hurting me.””

The words were simple.

But they destroyed the room.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Even Rebecca had no response.

Marcus lowered himself slightly so he was closer to Lily’s height.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

His eyes became wet.

“For not coming sooner.””

Rebecca suddenly stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You’re still doing it.””

“Doing what?””

“Controlling the story.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You think anyone believes you?””

Marcus opened the notebook.

“I don’t need them to believe me.””

He looked at Daniel.

“I have proof.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What proof?””

Marcus turned the notebook around.

“Records.””

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“From the same place Sarah hid them.””

Clara stepped closer.

“What records?””

Marcus looked at everyone.

“The records that prove Sarah wasn’t planning to leave.””

Lily froze.

Her entire life had been built around one painful belief.

That her mother left.

That maybe she wasn’t important enough.

That maybe, somehow, she wasn’t worth staying for.

But now everyone was saying the opposite.

Marcus opened the notebook.

“Sarah was investigating missing money from Daniel’s company.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“But she discovered something else.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked directly at Rebecca.

“She discovered that someone had been using her identity to move money.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus continued.

“She discovered someone had created fake accounts. Someone had access to her personal information.””

Clara whispered:

“Rebecca.””

Rebecca turned sharply.

“Don’t.””

But Clara’s voice was full of realization.

“You used Sarah’s identity.””

Rebecca’s face hardened.

“You have no proof.””

Marcus nodded.

“I do.””

He pulled out several papers.

Daniel walked closer.

“What are those?””

“Bank transfers.””

Daniel took them.

His eyes moved quickly over the pages.

Then his face changed.

“No…”

Lily watched him.

“What?””

Daniel looked sick.

“These accounts…”

Marcus nodded.

“They were opened under Sarah’s name.””

Rebecca crossed her arms.

“So?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Sarah didn’t open them.””

The room became heavy.

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

He stared at her.

“No more lies.””

Lily had never heard her father sound like that.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just broken.

Rebecca looked around.

“You all think you understand what happened?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“We know what happened.””

Rebecca laughed.

A cold laugh.

“You don’t know anything.””

She pointed at Daniel.

“He abandoned Sarah when she needed him.””

Daniel flinched.

She pointed at Clara.

“You disappeared.””

Then she looked at Evelyn.

“You spent years pretending you were the only person who cared about Lily.””

Finally, she looked at Lily.

“And you.””

Lily shrank back.

Rebecca’s voice became quieter.

“You have no idea what your mother was really like.””

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Lily stopped her.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Lily’s hands trembled.

“I want to know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Sweetheart…”

“No, Daddy.””

Her voice shook.

“But I need to know.””

She looked at Rebecca.

“Was Mommy scared of you?””

Nobody answered.

Rebecca’s silence was the answer.

Lily closed her eyes.

A painful breath escaped.

Marcus looked at her sadly.

“Your mother wasn’t scared for herself.””

Lily opened her eyes.

“She wasn’t?””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was scared for you.””

The words hit differently.

Because Lily understood fear.

She understood wanting to protect someone.

She understood holding onto someone when the world felt dangerous.

“What happened that night?”” Lily asked.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It’s time.””

Rebecca’s face changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t get to stop this.””

Marcus opened the notebook again.

“Five years ago, Sarah discovered the financial fraud. She planned to report it.””

“To who?”” Clara asked.

“The police.””

Lily’s heart raced.

“But she disappeared.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Rebecca.

“Because someone found out.””

Rebecca stepped backward.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Sarah called me the night before she vanished.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You talked to her?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus stared at him.

“Because she asked me not to.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“Because she believed someone inside the family was dangerous.””

Lily looked at Rebecca.

Again.

That same horrible feeling.

The feeling of knowing the answer before hearing it.

Marcus continued.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Lily.””

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small object.

A necklace.

Lily gasped.

Because she recognized it.

“My mommy had that.””

Marcus nodded.

“She gave it to me the night she disappeared.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What is inside?””

Marcus looked at him.

“A message.””

Rebecca suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

She grabbed the necklace.

But Marcus stepped away.

Evelyn shouted:

“Rebecca!””

Rebecca stared at the necklace in her hand.

Her breathing became frantic.

“No.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“What did you just do?””

Rebecca squeezed the necklace.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“You don’t understand.””

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I already copied everything.””

Rebecca froze.

“Everything?””

Marcus nodded.

“Sarah knew you might try to destroy the evidence.””

The room went silent.

Lily stared at Rebecca.

“She knew you would hurt her.””

Rebecca’s face cracked.

For one second, she looked almost human.

Almost regretful.

Then it disappeared.

“You all want the truth?””

She looked at Lily.

“Fine.””

She dropped the necklace onto the floor.

“Ask your father why Sarah was running away that night.””

Daniel went still.

Lily looked at him.

“Daddy?””

Marcus frowned.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But Rebecca smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“Ask him.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

And that silence was enough to make Lily’s heart stop.

Because Rebecca wasn’t afraid of the evidence anymore.

She was afraid of what Daniel had never told them.

The truth wasn’t only about Rebecca.

It was about her father too.

And when Daniel finally whispered the words that followed, Lily realized the person who destroyed her family had been hiding much closer than she ever imagined.

“Your mother wasn’t trying to escape from Rebecca…”

May you like

Daniel looked at Lily with tears in his eyes.

“She was trying to protect you from me.””
