Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Buried

The words echoed through the room.

“She was trying to protect you from me.””

Lily stared at her father.

For a moment, she couldn’t understand what he meant.

Her mind searched for another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything except the possibility that the person she trusted most had been the reason her mother was afraid.

“Daddy…”

Her voice was barely there.

Daniel looked like he wanted to run toward her.

But he didn’t.

Maybe because he knew he didn’t deserve to.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

Lily looked down at her hands.

The same hands that had held her father’s finger when she was a baby.

The same hands that had reached for him after every surgery.

The same hands that had waited by the window for him to come home.

“Know what?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“The truth about that night.””

Rebecca stood silently in the corner.

For once, she wasn’t controlling the room.

She was watching.

Waiting.

Because she knew Daniel’s confession could change everything.

Clara crossed her arms.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked at her.

There was pain in his expression.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Clara replied.

“I understand exactly.””

She pointed toward Lily.

“That little girl spent years believing her mother abandoned her.””

Daniel looked down.

“She deserved to know.””

“Yes,” Clara said.

“She did.””

The words were not angry.

That made them worse.

Daniel walked toward the fireplace and stared at the flames.

“When Sarah and I got married, I thought I could give her everything.””

Lily listened quietly.

“But I was wrong.””

The room became still.

“I gave her a beautiful house. Security. Money.””

His voice cracked.

“But I stopped giving her the one thing she needed.””

“What?”” Lily whispered.

Daniel turned.

“Honesty.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel continued.

“My company was struggling. A major investor pulled out. I was afraid of losing everything.””

Rebecca looked away.

“Instead of telling Sarah, I hid it.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You didn’t just hide the problem.””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

He looked ashamed.

“I borrowed money.””

Clara frowned.

“From who?””

Daniel hesitated.

And that hesitation told Lily there was something worse.

“From people I shouldn’t have.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Criminal lenders.””

Lily’s eyes widened.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“I thought I could fix it before anyone found out.””

Rebecca gave a quiet laugh.

“You always thought you could fix everything.””

Daniel ignored her.

“But Sarah found out.””

Lily swallowed.

“How?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She found the documents.””

The room was silent except for the sound of rain against the windows.

“She found out I had used company funds to cover my personal debts.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Oh, Daniel…”

“I was desperate.””

His voice broke.

“I thought I was protecting my family.””

Clara shook her head.

“You were protecting your pride.””

Daniel accepted the accusation.

Because he knew it was true.

Lily looked at him.

“And Mommy was angry?””

Daniel nodded.

“She was hurt.””

“Did she hate you?””

The question destroyed him.

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“No, Lily.””

He stepped closer.

“She never hated me.””

“Then why did she leave?””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

And Rebecca’s face changed.

Because the answer involved her.

“Sarah didn’t leave.””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“She was trying to get help.””

Lily froze.

“What?””

“She found out someone had been making my situation worse.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“The fake accounts.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Clara looked at Rebecca.

“You.””

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

“This is ridiculous.””

But her voice lacked confidence.

Daniel continued.

“Sarah discovered that someone had been moving money through accounts connected to her name.””

“And she blamed Rebecca?”” Lily asked.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She suspected her.””

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“Suspected?””

Everyone looked at her.

She laughed.

“You’re all acting like Sarah was some innocent angel.””

Lily flinched.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Your mother was smart. She was stubborn. She thought everyone around her was hiding something.””

Clara’s voice sharpened.

“Because they were.””

Rebecca ignored her.

“Daniel was drowning in debt.””

She pointed at him.

“You lied to your wife.””

Then she pointed at Marcus.

“You disappeared.””

Finally, she looked at Lily.

“And Sarah?””

Her smile faded.

“She made choices too.””

Lily looked confused.

“What choices?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Sarah wanted to take you away.””

The words felt like a punch.

“Why?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because she thought you weren’t safe.””

“With you?””

He nodded.

Lily looked away.

The answer hurt.

But she needed it.

“She believed I had become someone dangerous.””

Daniel’s voice shook.

“I never hurt her.””

Marcus interrupted.

“But you did threaten her.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

“You told her if she exposed the company fraud, you would lose everything.””

Daniel went silent.

Lily stared.

“Daddy?””

Daniel whispered.

“I said things I regret.””

“What things?””

He looked at his daughter.

“I told her I couldn’t survive without you.””

Lily frowned.

“That doesn’t sound bad.””

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“It wasn’t the words.””

“Then what?””

“The way I said them.””

The room became heavy.

“I was angry. Afraid. I told her she couldn’t take you away from me.””

Lily’s heart pounded.

“Did Mommy think you would?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“But Sarah was wrong about one thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

“She thought Daniel was the biggest danger.””

He looked at Rebecca.

“She was wrong.””

Rebecca stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus opened his notebook.

“Because while Daniel was making mistakes, Rebecca was planning.””

Rebecca’s face went cold.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Marcus pulled out another document.

“This is a copy of Sarah’s final investigation notes.””

Daniel walked closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“It says your mother discovered the person manipulating the accounts was someone close to the family.””

Clara asked:

“Did she write a name?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Everyone froze.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Rebecca.

Then he looked at Daniel.

Then back at Rebecca.

“She didn’t finish writing it.””

Rebecca exhaled.

A small sign of relief.

“But…”

Marcus lifted another page.

“She left a clue.””

Daniel frowned.

“What clue?””

Marcus turned the page around.

A handwritten sentence appeared.

Lily couldn’t read all the words from where she sat.

But she saw one word clearly.

Rebecca.

Her stomach dropped.

“Why is her name there?””

Nobody answered.

Rebecca suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Daniel blocked the doorway.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“You won’t stop me.””

“Yes.””

His voice was different now.

Stronger.

“You’re not walking away again.””

Rebecca laughed.

“You think you’re a hero now?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“I think I’m finally doing what I should have done years ago.””

Rebecca stared at him.

“And what’s that?””

“Protecting my daughter.””

For the first time, Rebecca looked genuinely angry.

Not scared.

Not nervous.

Angry.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting her from.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca smiled.

A slow, terrifying smile.

“It means Sarah wasn’t the only one who discovered the truth.””

The room fell silent.

Rebecca reached into her purse.

Everyone tensed.

But she didn’t pull out a weapon.

She pulled out a small envelope.

An envelope that looked old.

Worn.

Hidden for years.

Lily recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Rebecca held it up.

“I was going to destroy this.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Rebecca looked at Lily.

“Your mother gave me this before she disappeared.””

Lily’s breath caught.

“Why?””

Rebecca smiled.

“Because she trusted me.””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at the letter.

“She trusted the wrong person.””

Then she handed it to Lily.

And when Lily opened it, the first line made everyone in the room freeze.

Because Sarah’s words weren’t a goodbye.

They were a warning.

*“Lily, if Rebecca is the one who gives you this letter, do not believe anything she says.””*

Rebecca’s face went completely still.

Because the secret she buried wasn’t gone.

May you like

It had been waiting.

And now Lily was finally old enough to read it.
