Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH IS BIGGER THAN I KNEW

I walked out of the café in a daze. The sun was shining, people were going about their days, cars passed by—but none of it felt real.
Margaret had swapped the babies.
Margaret had stolen my child.
I pulled out my phone and called Daniel. He answered immediately.
“Emily? Is everything okay?”
“Daniel,” I said, my voice shaking. “I need you to listen to me very carefully. I just spoke to Vanessa. She told me everything.”
There was a long silence on the other end.
“Everything?” he asked quietly.
“About Elena. About the babies being born on the same day. About Margaret going to the clinic that night. About her swapping them. And about Elena coming back two years ago.”
Daniel swore under his breath.
“Emily… do not believe everything Vanessa says. She is easily influenced. She exaggerates—”
“Does she?” I cut him off. “Daniel, both babies were born the same day at the same clinic. Does that sound like a coincidence? Does it?”
Daniel was silent.
“Daniel! Answer me!”
“I did not know they were born the same day,” he said slowly. “Margaret told me Elena lost the baby. She told me Elena had left the country. I did not know she gave birth. I did not know she was at the same clinic.”
“But you suspected,” I said. “Deep down, you suspected. That is why you paid for the DNA test. That is why you were kept doubting. That is why you burned that letter instead of letting me see every word.”
Daniel’s voice grew tight with urgency.
“Emily, listen to me. If Margaret truly swapped them… then the DNA test would have told us. If Noah is Elena’s child, not yours… then why does the test say he is mine? It cannot be both ways.”
I froze on the sidewalk. People walked around me, glancing at me, but I barely noticed.
He was right.
The DNA test proved Daniel was Noah’s father. If Elena was Noah’s mother… then Daniel was still his father. Which meant…
“Oh God,” I whispered.
“Emily?”
“If Elena was Noah’s mother… and you are his father… then Noah is yours by blood. But he is not mine.” My voice cracked. “Which means my real son… the baby I carried… is somewhere else entirely. And he is yours too, Daniel. He is our son. And Margaret gave him away.”
Daniel went completely silent. I could hear his breathing ragged on the other end.
“Daniel,” I said, louder now. “Tell me you did not know. Tell me you never suspected.”
“I did not know,” he said, his voice barely audible. “I swear it on my life. But Emily… I think I know where Margaret sent him.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“To my aunt’s sister. A woman named Clara. She lives in a small town north of here. Margaret has been sending money there every month for five years. I found the receipts once, years ago. She told me it was for a distant cousin’s medical bills. I never questioned it.”
“Clara,” I repeated. “And the boy?”
“His name is Leo. He will be five years old now. Exactly Noah’s age.”
Tears blinded me. I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles turned white.
“That is him, Daniel. That is my baby.”
“I will drive there right now,” Daniel said. “I will meet you there. Do not go alone, Emily. Promise me you will wait for me.”
“I cannot wait,” I said. “Every minute I wait is another minute away from my son.”
“Emily, please—Margaret may be there. She may have warned Clara. It could be dangerous.”
“I do not care. I am going to get him.”
I hung up before he could say another word. I walked straight to my car, my hands shaking so badly I could barely fit the key in the ignition. I typed Clara’s town into my GPS and drove.
The road stretched long and empty ahead of me. The miles blurred together. All I could think about was a little boy named Leo. His face. His eyes. Whether he looked like me. Whether he wondered where his real mother was. Whether he thought Clara was his mother.
Whether he would know me when he saw me.
I thought about Noah, too. Waiting back at home. Sweet, brave Noah who had been thrown under a staircase because of who his mother was. Elena’s son. Daniel’s son. My son in every way that mattered—every way except blood.
If I brought Leo home… what would happen to Noah?
Margaret had stolen one child and given me another. She had destroyed two lives to control everything. And now I had to fix it all. Without breaking either little boy.
I drove faster.
The GPS told me I was ten minutes away when my phone rang. I glanced at the screen. Daniel.
I answered.
“Emily—do not go to Clara’s house,” he said, breathless. “Margaret knows. She found out we spoke. She is already there. She left twenty minutes ago, screaming that she would not let anyone ruin everything she built.”
My blood ran cold.
“Is she going to hurt him?”
“I do not know. Emily, turn around. Wait for me. I am twenty minutes behind you. Please.”
May you like
“I am five minutes away,” I said. “And if Margaret hurts my baby… I will never forgive her. Not ever.”
I hung up and pressed the gas pedal harder.
