Chapter 13 - LEARNING TO BELONG

The months that followed were strange and difficult. We were building a new kind of family—one that should never have existed.

Elena rented a house nearby. She visited Noah every other day. She took him to the park. She read him stories. She taught him things she knew. And slowly, Noah began to love her. Not as a replacement for me—but as Elena. As his other mother.

Leo struggled most of all. He had spent his life with Clara. Then suddenly he had me. Daniel. Elena. A brother. Too many people loving him all at once. He would wake up screaming in the night. He would hide. He would refuse to speak.

One afternoon, I sat on the floor with him in his new bedroom.

“Leo,” I said softly. “Are you angry with me?”

He looked up from his toy cars, his eyes wet.

“You are not my mommy,” he said.

The words hit me hard.

“I know, baby. I know Clara was your mommy. And I will never try to replace her. But I am your mother too. The one who carried you. The one who looked for you. And I will love you forever. No matter what.”

Leo stared at me for a long time. Then he crawled into my lap and buried his face in my shoulder.

“I want Clara,” he whispered.

My heart broke all over again.

“I know. And we will go visit her. Whenever you want. She loves you. And she will always be part of your life. But this is your home now. With me. And Noah. And your father.”

Leo held on tight.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Daniel stepped forward slowly. He had been standing in the doorway, listening.

“May I?” he asked quietly.

I nodded.

He sat down beside us. He reached out and touched Leo’s hand.

“I know this is hard,” he said. “I know everything is confusing. But I love you, Leo. And I love Noah. And I will spend the rest of my life proving that to both of you. I made terrible mistakes. But I will never let anyone hurt you again. Never.”

May you like

Leo looked at Daniel. Then he looked at me. Slowly, hesitantly, he reached out and took Daniel’s hand.

It was the first time he had touched him willingly.
