Chapter 14 - THE NEW THREAT

Just as we were beginning to heal, something happened.

I received a letter in the mail. No return address. Handwritten.

*“You think you won. You think you can take everything and be happy. But blood is not so easily rewritten. Watch your back.”*

My blood ran cold.

I showed it to Daniel that evening. His face went hard.

“Margaret,” he said. “Even in prison she cannot let go.”

“Can she send letters from prison?” I asked.

“She can have someone write them for her. Vanessa is gone. Clara would never. But Margaret still has friends. Old acquaintances. People who would do her bidding.”

Daniel contacted the prison immediately. They increased security on Margaret’s mail. They monitored her communications. But the letters kept coming. Different handwriting. Different postmarks. Same message.

*“The boys belong to the Bennett bloodline. Not to you. Not to Elena.”*

*“What was swapped can be swapped back.”*

Fear returned to our home. We installed security cameras. We changed the locks again. We walked the boys to school ourselves. We never let them out of our sight.

One afternoon, Elena picked Noah up from school. She was ten minutes late. I stood in the driveway, watching the clock, my heart pounding. When her car finally pulled up, I ran toward it.

Elena stepped out, pale and shaking. Noah was asleep in the back seat.

“Someone followed us,” she said. “A black car. It stayed behind me for miles. I drove around until it lost us.”

Daniel arrived minutes later. He listened to Elena’s story and went deadly quiet.

“This is not just letters,” he said. “Margaret is planning something. Something big.”
