Chapter 8 - THE ANONYMOUS ALLY

In the weeks that followed, the world began to shift. Julian and Vanessa were formally charged. Their empire crumbled. Names from the ledger appeared in headlines daily. Politicians resigned. Police chiefs were arrested. The corruption reached so high it made me dizzy.
But the matriarch remained free. And the Council remained a ghost. No names. No faces. Only whispers and shadows.
I moved Noah and Sarah to a federal safe house under maximum security. Noah understood little, only that we had to stay inside, that strangers were dangerous. I sat with him many evenings, reading stories, holding him while he slept, terrified that one morning I would wake and he too would be gone.
Dr. Thorne recovered slowly. He visited us under heavy guard. One afternoon he sat beside me in the garden, voice still weak but steady.
“I knew Julian’s father,” he said. “Before he died. He told me something once. The Council does not just protect the fortune. They protect a secret older than the Sterling name itself. A secret written on pages kept separate from the ledger. Pages that pass only from heir to heir.”
“What secret?”
He shook his head. “I do not know. But he said when Noah comes of age… they will come for him. Not to kill him. To show him. To bind him. That is why they want him alive, Adrian. They need his blood. His signature. His consent.”
My blood ran cold. “Consent to what?”
“To join them. To become one of them.”
That same night, I received an email. Sent to an address only three people knew. No name. No return address. Attached was a scanned document.
A separate list. Handwritten. In the old script I had seen in the ledger’s final pages. Nine names. Nine families. The Council.
Beneath each name was a location. A business address. A summer home. A private club. Everything.
At the very bottom, typed in plain text:
*One is already dead. Another will fall within days. Move fast. They are preparing to leave the country and regroup overseas. You have seventy-two hours before they vanish.*
I sat staring at the screen. Who sent this? Why?
I traced the source. Untraceable. Sent through layers of protected servers. But the names were real. Cross-referencing with the ledger, every single one appeared connected to payments, land deals, and transactions predating Julian’s birth.
Someone inside had betrayed them. Someone who wanted this destroyed as much as I did.
Marquez arrived at dawn. She read the list, then looked at me with wide eyes.
“This changes everything. If this is real… we can take them all. Simultaneous raids. Arrest every Council member at once. Before they know we have their names.”
“It is a trap,” I said. “It could be bait to lead you into ambushes.”
“Or it is our one chance.” She leaned forward. “Adrian, if they leave… we may never find them again. Noah will never be safe. Claire’s death will remain half-avenged. We have to act.”
I looked at the names. At the handwriting. And then I saw it. One name had been crossed out with a single sharp line. Sterling. Beside it, written in modern ink: She betrayed us all. She will pay.
The matriarch. Whoever sent this… hated her.
“Do it,” I said. “Coordinate the raids. But I am coming with you.”
“No—”
May you like
“I have the ledger. I know their signatures. Their habits. Their weaknesses. And if this is a trap… I am the only one who knows enough to survive it.”
Marquez hesitated. Then she nodded. “Seventy-two hours. We hit every location at once. And Adrian… stay behind the line. Let us do our jobs. If something goes wrong… Noah needs his father.”
