Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT TRUTH

I told no one. Not Marquez. Not Sarah. Not even Noah. If there was a traitor inside the task force… the fewer who knew, the better.

At dawn I drove toward the mountains. The address led to a remote valley miles from any town. No cell service. No neighbors. Exactly the kind of place someone went to disappear.

I arrived shortly after noon. A small weathered cabin stood beside a frozen stream. Smoke curled thin from the chimney. One car parked beneath pine trees.

I approached slowly, weapon drawn, stepping silently over fallen needles.

The front door opened before I reached the steps.

A woman stepped out. Older. Gray hair pulled back. Face lined with exhaustion and sorrow. I recognized her instantly from old photographs.

Julian’s sister. Vanessa’s aunt. The matriarch’s own daughter. Declared dead twenty years ago.

She held up both hands. Empty.

“I am not here to fight you, Adrian.”

“Are you the one sending me messages?”

She nodded. “I have been fighting my mother since she killed my father. Since she seized control. Since she decided Noah was nothing more than property to be traded.”

“Why help me?”

“Because Claire was my friend,” she said, voice breaking. “She came to me the week before she died. Terrified. She told me everything. I tried to stop them. But I was too late.”

She stepped aside. “Come inside. There is something you need to see. Something Claire left here for you. Hidden before she went home that final night.”

Inside, on the wooden table, sat a second ledger. Identical to the first. Bound in dark leather. Embossed not with a raven, but with a single lily—Claire’s personal mark.

I opened it. Her handwriting. Every page. Her own investigation. Her own evidence. Everything she had uncovered about the Council, the fortune, the bloodline… and the truth about Noah.

I read the final page slowly. My hands began to shake.

*Noah is not Julian’s son. He is not Sterling blood at all. I altered the records myself. Julian forced himself on me once, yes—but I changed the dates. The bloodwork. Everything. Noah was born three months too early to be his. He is Adrian’s son. Only Adrian’s. I lied to protect him. If they believe Noah belongs to them… they will keep him alive until he comes of age. If they learn the truth… they will kill him instantly. Tell Adrian when the time is right. Tell him our son is his. And that I loved them both until my last breath.*

The book slipped from my fingers. I sank into a chair. Gasping for air. All that fear. All that grief. Every moment of terror thinking I would lose him to monsters… and he was mine. Completely mine. Claire had sacrificed herself, let them believe the lie, all to keep him breathing.

The woman watched me cry. “Claire knew her life was ending. She gave them exactly what they wanted—a false heir. It bought Noah time. It bought you time. She hoped you would find the truth one day, strong enough to defeat them before anyone discovered the lie.”

I looked up. “Where is the matriarch now?”

“She is gathering the remaining Council members overseas. In three months, on Noah’s seventh birthday, they intend to declare him the legal heir and seize control of everything. Once that happens… they will kill you, marry Vanessa to someone they control, and rule through Noah for decades.”

“But he is not theirs.”

“They do not know that. And if you reveal it now… they will kill him. To them, if Noah is not Sterling, he is nothing. A liability to be erased.”

I stood. Wiped my face. Folded Claire’s ledger into my coat where I could feel it against my heart.

“They will come for him on his birthday,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Then I will be ready. I will let them come. Let them gather. And on that day… I will expose every lie. Every crime. Every name. And I will walk away with my son. While they spend the rest of their lives in chains.”

The woman reached out and touched my arm. “You are braver than Claire was. And she was the bravest person I ever knew.”

I drove back down the mountains as dusk fell. My heart felt lighter than it had in two years. Noah was mine. Claire had given me that truth. And now I would give her justice.
