Chapter 9: The Secret Behind the Marriage
I drove to Rachel's house with Laura's last words repeating in my head.
Daniel had been at our apartment the night before the accident.
Laura had lost our baby the following evening.
And Vanessa had spent years making sure I never learned how those events were connected.
When I arrived, Rachel opened the door before I knocked.
“Thank God.””
She stepped aside.
Lily sat on the living room rug with a coloring book, while Mason stood near the window, watching the street.
The moment he saw me, he turned away.
I knew that movement.
It was the same one he'd made when I asked why he hadn't told me about the food.
He expected me to be disappointed in him.
I crossed the room.
“Mason?””
He kept his eyes on the window.
“I'm sorry.””
I stopped.
“For what?””
“For taking the recordings.””
I stared at him.
“You don't have to apologize for showing me something that made you afraid.””
“But I went through Mom's tablet.””
“You were trying to understand why your sister wasn't getting enough food.””
“I wasn't supposed to.””
I knelt beside him.
“Mason, listen to me. You are twelve years old. You should be worrying about school, video games, and whether your friends are going to come over this weekend. You shouldn't have to investigate adults to make sure your sister gets dinner.””
His face crumpled.
“I thought you'd be mad.””
“I was angry.””
He flinched.
I immediately regretted the word.
“Not at you,” I said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“I was angry that I hadn't seen what was happening. I was angry that you were scared to tell me. But I am not angry with you for trying to protect Lily.””
He looked at me.
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
Mason finally let himself cry.
I pulled him into a hug, and he clung to me with the desperation of a child who had been trying to remain brave for far too long.
“I should've told you sooner,” he whispered.
“You told me when you could.””
“I should've tried harder.””
“No.””
I held him tighter.
“You did enough.””
Across the room, Lily looked up from her coloring book.
“Daddy?””
I released Mason and opened my arms.
She hurried over, carrying a picture of three stick figures standing beneath a yellow sun.
“This is you,” she said, pointing to the tallest figure.
“This is me. And this is Mason.””
I smiled despite the ache in my chest.
“It's beautiful.””
She pointed to the empty space beside us.
“I left room for Aunt Rachel.””
Rachel laughed softly from the kitchen.
“Good thinking, sweetheart.””
Lily studied the drawing.
“Can I draw another person?””
“Of course.””
“Can I draw Sophie?””
I froze.
Mason looked at her.
Rachel stopped moving.
Lily continued coloring as though she'd asked whether she could use a different crayon.
“Mommy said Daddy had another little girl before me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else did Mommy tell you?””
Lily's expression changed.
“She said Sophie was the reason you worked so much.””
I sat beside her.
“That's not true.””
“She said you were saving money because you didn't want Sophie to come live with us.””
I felt a cold anger rise inside me.
“Lily, none of that is your fault. And Sophie isn't your enemy. She's a little girl who has been kept away from her father, just like you were frightened into believing I might leave you.””
Lily looked thoughtful.
“Does Sophie like cookies?””
I blinked.
“I don't know.””
“Maybe I can share mine with her.””
I kissed the top of her head.
“Maybe you can.””
It was the kind of kindness I wanted to protect for the rest of her life.
After the children settled down with Rachel, I called Laura and asked her to meet me at the attorney's office.
She arrived carrying a thick folder.
Inside were documents I'd never seen before: old emails, a police report, and a copy of a photograph taken outside our apartment eight years earlier.
Daniel stood beside a black SUV.
The date was the day before Laura's accident.
I stared at the photograph.
“Why didn't you tell the police about him?””
“I did.””
“What happened?””
“They interviewed him. He said he'd come to return a package for Vanessa, who had supposedly left it at our apartment.””
“Vanessa was already in our lives?””
“Not officially. She'd contacted me a few times, claiming she wanted to help with your divorce.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“I don't understand. Why was she involving herself in our marriage before we'd even separated?””
Laura looked down.
“Because Daniel had a debt.””
I stared at her.
“What kind of debt?””
“He owed money to someone who had threatened him. He said he needed a way to repay it, and Vanessa told him she could help.””
“With my money?””
“I think so.””
She opened the folder and showed me a printed email.
The sender was Daniel.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The message was dated eight years earlier.
*If he signs the agreement, the property will cover everything. But you need to get Laura out of the way first.*
I read it twice.
“What agreement?””
Laura handed me another document.
It was an old loan proposal bearing the name of a private investment company.
The borrower was Daniel.
The collateral was a property owned by a third party.
My name appeared in the notes section.
*Michael Carter — potential guarantor.*
I shook my head.
“I never agreed to guarantee a loan for Daniel.””
“I know.””
“How did he get my information?””
Laura pointed to the bottom of the page.
Vanessa's name appeared beside the phrase *family contact*.
I sat back.
“She was planning this before we married.””
Laura nodded.
“She told Daniel that if she could get you to trust her, she could persuade you to sign whatever he needed.””
“And when the loan failed?””
“Daniel was in trouble. That's when he started threatening people.””
I looked at the photograph of the SUV.
“Did he cause the accident?””
Laura's eyes filled.
“I don't know. The police never proved that. But the night before it happened, he came to our apartment and asked me to sign a document.””
“What document?””
“A statement saying you had agreed to guarantee his loan. I refused.””
I felt my heart hammer.
“Then what?””
“He became angry. He said I'd be responsible for ruining Vanessa's future. I told him to leave.””
Laura swallowed.
“The next evening, I was driving home when a black SUV followed me. It kept getting closer. I tried to change lanes, but it followed me. Then it came alongside me, and I lost control.””
I stared at her.
“Did you see the driver?””
“No. The windows were dark.””
“Could it have been Daniel?””
“It could have been. But I can't say that for certain.””
She looked at me with exhausted honesty.
“I've spent eight years wondering whether he meant to hurt me or whether it was an accident. I don't want to accuse someone without proof. But I know he was angry with me, and I know he wanted that document signed.””
I looked down at the loan proposal.
The pieces were connecting, but there were still gaps.
I needed evidence.
Not guesses.
Not suspicions.
Evidence.
Robert entered the room carrying a laptop.
“We've received preliminary information from the bank,” he said.
“There are several transfers that appear inconsistent with the stated purpose of the account.””
He opened a spreadsheet.
“The account associated with Carter Family Holdings received money from your household account and then transferred funds to Daniel's business. Some of those transfers correspond with the dates of the property documents.””
“Can we prove fraud?””
“Not yet. But there are enough irregularities to justify further investigation.””
He turned to Laura.
“We've also requested the original police report from your accident. It may take time to obtain.””
Laura nodded.
Robert continued.
“There's another issue. We found a recent property filing submitted under your name, Michael. It appears to authorize the sale of your house.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“The filing has not completed the transfer, but it appears someone has attempted to register an interest in the property.””
“Can they sell my house without me?””
“Not lawfully if the signature is forged. But we need to act quickly to challenge the filing and protect the title.””
He handed me a copy.
The document listed a proposed buyer.
A company called Westbridge Residential.
The director was Daniel Carter.
I stared at the page.
“He was going to sell my house.””
“It appears that was the plan.””
I leaned back, struggling to control my breathing.
All those years of extra shifts. All those missed mornings with Lily. All the times Vanessa had told me we were almost caught up.
I'd believed I was working to protect my family's future.
Meanwhile, someone had been preparing to take the very thing I was working to pay for.
Robert closed the folder.
“We'll file the necessary notices and request a review of the suspicious documents. In the meantime, don't confront Daniel, and don't agree to meet him.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered with the speaker on.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was shaky.
“Michael, please. I need to see the children.””
“No.””
“Just for a few minutes.””
“Not without proper arrangements.””
“You can't keep them from me forever.””
“I haven't said forever. I've said not until they're safe.””
She began to cry.
“I made mistakes.””
“You hit Lily.””
“I know.””
“You let her go hungry.””
“I was overwhelmed.””
“You told her I didn't love her.””
Vanessa fell silent.
Then she whispered, “I never wanted her to believe that.””
“Then why did you say it?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Her breathing became ragged.
“Of losing everything.””
I stared at the phone.
“You've been hiding money, forging documents, and threatening children. What did you think was going to happen?””
“I didn't forge the documents.””
“Your signature is on the company records.””
“Daniel handled those.””
“You signed the paperwork.””
“He told me it was temporary!””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Not a confession to everything, but an admission that she had knowingly participated.
“Why did you marry me, Vanessa?””
She didn't answer.
“Was it because you loved me?””
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered, “At first.””
I felt something inside me go cold.
“At first?””
“I did love you, Michael. I did. But Daniel was in trouble, and I thought I could help him without hurting you.””
“By stealing from me?””
“I thought I'd pay it back.””
“With what?””
She started crying harder.
“I don't know.””
I looked at Robert, who was writing notes.
“Why did you hit Lily?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Because she reminded me of how much I had lost control of.””
I stared at the phone.
“You took your anger out on a five-year-old because you couldn't control the rest of your life.””
“I know.””
“And you made Mason afraid to speak.””
“I know.””
“Then you need to stop making excuses and start telling the truth.””
She sobbed.
“I can't. Daniel will destroy me.””
“That's your choice to deal with.””
“Michael, please. You don't understand what he did to me.””
“Then tell me.””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“He has something on me.””
“What?””
“I can't say it over the phone.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Is it about the accident?””
Vanessa went completely silent.
“Vanessa?””
Finally, she spoke.
“Daniel wasn't supposed to hurt Laura.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“I told him to scare her. I wanted her to stop contacting you. I didn't know he'd follow her in the car.””
My hands began to tremble.
“Are you saying you sent Daniel after Laura?””
“I didn't tell him to cause an accident!””
“But you knew he was going to confront her.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe Laura abandoned me.””
She sobbed.
“I thought she'd recover. I thought she'd move away. I thought if I gave you enough time, you'd forget her.””
I stared at the phone.
“You let me believe my wife had left me while she was recovering from an accident you helped arrange.””
“I was young. I was scared.””
“You were old enough to know what you were doing.””
She said nothing.
I ended the call.
Robert looked at me gravely.
“Did you record that conversation?””
I nodded.
“Good. Preserve it. We'll discuss the appropriate way to provide it to investigators.””
I sat motionless, staring at the table.
Vanessa had admitted to sending Daniel to frighten Laura.
But she had also said something else.
He wasn't supposed to hurt her.
That meant she knew he could.
And she had sent him anyway.
I left the attorney's office shortly after five and drove to Rachel's house.
When I arrived, Mason was waiting on the porch.
He looked as though he'd been crying.
“Dad?””
I got out of the car.
“What's wrong?””
He held out his phone.
“Mom sent me a message.””
I took it.
The message read:
*Mason, please tell Michael I need to see him. If you don't, Daniel will make sure everyone finds out what happened to your father.*
I looked at Mason.
“What does she mean?””
He shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed a man standing beside Vanessa outside a courthouse.
The man was Mason's biological father.
I recognized him from the few pictures Vanessa had shown me years earlier.
He had died when Mason was a toddler, according to what Vanessa had told me.
But someone had written a date on the back of the photograph.
Three weeks ago.
I stared at it.
“Mason, where did you get this?””
“Mom's bag.””
My heart began to pound.
“Your father died years ago, didn't he?””
Mason nodded slowly.
“That's what Mom told me.””
I turned the photograph over again.
The date was clear.
May you like
Three weeks ago.
Then Mason whispered, “Dad, I think my father might still be alive.””
