Chapter 9: The Truth Ellen Hid

I spent the entire night staring at my wife.

Not because I didn't trust her.

Because I didn't understand.

Lauren's words wouldn't leave my mind.

The person you trust least is the person who has been protecting you.

I knew exactly who she meant.

Ellen.

My wife.

The woman who had spent forty-one years beside me.

The woman who had hidden Michael's secrets.

The woman who had protected me from the truth.

At breakfast, I finally asked.

"Ellen.""

She looked up.

The expression on her face told me she already knew.

"What did Lauren mean?""

The color drained from her face.

I put my coffee down.

"You know something else.""

She looked away.

"Ellen.""

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

"I was the one who found the first documents.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Not last year.""

She swallowed.

"Six years ago.""

The room went quiet.

"You knew about Lauren?""

"Yes.""

"You knew about the money?""

She nodded.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Then why?""

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Because Michael came to me first.""

I waited.

"He begged me.""

"For what?""

"Help.""

She covered her face.

"He said Lauren was trying to ruin him. He said if you found out, you would hate him.""

I looked down.

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to.""

The honesty hurt.

"He was our son.""

I nodded slowly.

There it was again.

The reason everything happened.

Love.

Misplaced.

Manipulated.

"But then you found proof.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"What proof?""

She walked upstairs.

When she returned, she held a small box.

Inside was a flash drive.

"I kept this because I was afraid.""

I looked at it.

"Afraid of Michael?""

"No.""

She looked at me.

"Afraid of losing you.""

I plugged it into my computer.

There were recordings.

Documents.

Emails.

The first file was a conversation.

Michael's voice.

Six years younger.

"I just need time.""

Another voice.

A woman.

Not Cassandra.

Lauren.

"You lied to me.""

Michael answered:

"I was trying to protect my future.""

Lauren:

"You used my name.""

Michael:

"Everyone does what they have to do.""

I closed my eyes.

Ellen sat beside me.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

I looked at her.

"But why keep it now?""

She wiped her tears.

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

That was the sentence that broke me.

Not because she was wrong.

Because it was exactly who Ellen had always been.

She fixed.

She healed.

She carried.

Even when nobody asked her to.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Cassandra.

"Meet me alone. I can explain everything.""

I showed Ellen.

She looked worried.

"Don't go.""

"I need answers.""

"Robert.""

I held her hand.

"For forty-one years, we faced everything together.""

She squeezed my fingers.

"Then don't go alone.""

So we went together.

Cassandra chose a quiet café outside town.

When she saw Ellen, she looked surprised.

Then tired.

"I suppose it's better this way.""

I sat down.

"Start talking.""

Cassandra looked at Michael's mother.

"You don't know what your son is capable of.""

Ellen's expression hardened.

"I know more than you think.""

Cassandra looked at her.

Then nodded.

"Good.""

She removed an envelope.

Inside was a DNA test.

I stared.

"What is this?""

Cassandra looked at me.

"Lily is not Michael's daughter.""

The world stopped.

"What?""

Ellen gasped.

Cassandra pushed the paper forward.

"I found out before the wedding.""

I looked at the results.

The words blurred.

"No.""

Cassandra nodded.

"That's why everything changed.""

I looked up.

"Why would Michael marry you after finding out?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because he already knew.""

I froze.

"He knew?""

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

She looked down.

"Because Lily wasn't the only thing he was hiding.""

The café suddenly felt too quiet.

"What else?""

Cassandra whispered:

"Michael knew he wasn't your biological son either.""

I stared at her.

The words didn't make sense.

"What did you say?""

Ellen went completely still.

I looked at my wife.

And she looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

"Ellen?""

She couldn't speak.

My hands started shaking.

"Is this true?""

A tear rolled down her face.

And in that moment, before she said a single word, I already knew.

There was one more secret.

One final betrayal.

After forty-one years of marriage.

After thirty-two years raising Michael.

My entire life was about to change.

Ellen whispered:

"Robert...""

May you like

Her voice broke.

"I'm sorry.""
