Chapter 8: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
When I got home, Ellen was waiting by the window.
She knew from my face.
Something else had happened.
She didn't ask immediately.
She just walked toward me.
"Robert?""
I sat down.
For several minutes, I couldn't speak.
Then I said:
"He has a daughter.""
Ellen froze.
"What?""
"Her name is Lily.""
Her hand covered her mouth.
"A daughter?""
I nodded.
Five years of a child we never knew existed.
Five years of missing memories.
Five years stolen.
Ellen sat beside me slowly.
"Why would he hide that?""
I looked at her.
"Because hiding things is what he does.""
She looked down.
That hurt her.
Because despite everything, she was still his mother.
"I should have known.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
She looked at me.
"You were protecting him because you loved him.""
Her eyes filled.
"I protected him too much.""
Neither of us spoke after that.
The next morning, I called Daniel Pierce.
I needed answers about the wedding.
Not assumptions.
Not theories.
Facts.
Daniel agreed to meet me again.
This time, he brought someone with him.
A woman named Rachel.
She was one of the estate employees.
The same employee who had found Ellen after the hallway incident.
"I should have spoken sooner," Rachel said.
We sat in the same security office where I had watched my son hurt my wife.
"I didn't know it was your son.""
"What did you see?""
Rachel looked nervous.
"Your wife wasn't the first person he argued with that night.""
"Who was?""
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Cassandra.""
That surprised me.
"About what?""
Rachel pulled out her phone.
"I recorded part of it.""
My heart started racing.
"Why?""
"Because Cassandra looked scared.""
She pressed play.
The video was shaky.
The hallway.
The same hallway.
But earlier.
Before Ellen appeared.
Cassandra and Michael stood near the bridal suite.
Their voices were faint.
But clear enough.
"You promised me this would be over after the wedding," Cassandra said.
Michael responded.
"It will be.""
"You said that before.""
A pause.
Then Michael said something that made my blood freeze.
"Once I have access to the Whitaker accounts, nobody can stop us.""
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at the phone.
Cassandra continued.
"And what about Lily?""
Michael's voice changed.
"Lily won't matter.""
The video stopped.
I couldn't move.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel quietly said:
"Mr. Whitaker, there's more.""
I looked up.
"What?""
Rachel handed him another file.
"After the wedding, we reviewed the cameras because we noticed something strange.""
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Michael entering restricted areas.
Michael talking with a staff member.
Michael removing something from the bridal suite.
"What is that?""
Daniel enlarged the image.
A small envelope.
"The original documents.""
My stomach tightened.
"Lauren's files.""
Rachel nodded.
"We believe Michael was looking for them.""
I stared at the screen.
The truth finally formed completely.
Michael didn't marry Cassandra because he loved her.
They weren't building a future.
They were covering a past.
A past involving money.
Fraud.
A child.
And a family they were willing to destroy.
When I returned home, Ellen was in the kitchen.
I placed the phone on the table.
She watched the video.
By the end, she was crying.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she finally heard what she had always feared.
Our son wasn't just lost.
He was choosing.
That evening, I made a decision.
I called Michael.
He answered after one ring.
"Dad?""
"Come to the house.""
A pause.
"Why?""
"Because we need to finish this.""
He arrived thirty minutes later.
Alone.
The moment he entered, he knew.
The documents were on the table.
The recordings were ready.
He looked at me.
"You know.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
His face fell.
"Dad, please.""
I shook my head.
"No more please.""
He sat down.
For the first time, he looked like the child I remembered.
Scared.
Lost.
But then he spoke.
And the illusion disappeared.
"I can fix this.""
I stared.
"Fix what?""
"Everything.""
"You don't fix something by hiding it.""
"I was trying to protect us.""
"No.""
I leaned forward.
"You were protecting yourself.""
He looked at Ellen.
"Mom, tell him.""
She didn't answer.
"Mom.""
Her voice was quiet.
"I can't protect you from this anymore.""
That hurt him.
More than anything else.
Because he had spent years believing she always would.
I placed the recording in front of him.
"You and Cassandra planned this.""
He didn't deny it.
Not immediately.
That was enough.
Then he whispered:
"You don't understand what happens if I fail.""
I looked at him.
"What happens?""
His eyes moved to the documents.
And then he said something that made me realize this was far bigger than money.
"If I fail, Cassandra will destroy me.""
A silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
"Robert Whitaker?""
"Yes.""
"This is Lauren Hayes.""
I stood.
"What do you want?""
Her voice trembled.
"To warn you.""
"About what?""
A pause.
Then:
"Michael isn't the only one who has been lying.""
I looked at Ellen.
Lauren continued.
"The person you trust least is the person who has been protecting you.""
The call ended.
May you like
I slowly lowered my phone.
And for the first time in days, I wondered if we had been wrong about everyone.
