Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew the Beginning
I stood in the middle of Ethan's empty bedroom, holding the phone against my ear.
The voice on the other end remained silent.
Waiting.
As if he knew I was trying to process the impossible.
"You said you were there the night my father changed everything.""
My voice was low.
"Who are you?""
A quiet breath came through the speaker.
"My name is Andrew Collins.""
The name meant nothing at first.
Then everything.
I looked around the room.
The drawings on Ethan's desk.
The books beside his bed.
The small things that reminded me he was still just a child.
And yet somehow, adults had turned his life into a battlefield.
"Andrew Collins," I repeated.
"I know that name doesn't mean anything to you.""
"Should it?""
"You were young.""
My grip tightened.
"Where is my son?""
A pause.
Then:
"He's safe.""
My entire body went still.
"How do you know where he is?""
"Because I helped him leave.""
My heart stopped.
"You what?""
"Daniel, listen to me carefully.""
"No.""
My voice sharpened.
"You don't get to call me and tell me you took my son.""
"I didn't take him.""
"Then where is he?""
Another pause.
Then Andrew said:
"With someone who loves him.""
The anger that rose inside me almost drowned out everything else.
"Do not talk to me about love.""
I looked around Ethan's room.
"Not after what he has been through.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
"I do.""
His voice changed.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Sad.
"Because I watched the same thing happen before.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
"Your father knew someone would eventually try to control Ethan.""
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"What are you talking about?""
Andrew continued.
"Your father didn't create that trust because he was worried about money.""
"I know.""
"No.""
His voice became serious.
"You know part of the story.""
I stared at the empty doorway.
"What part don't I know?""
"The part about Ethan's mother.""
Everything stopped.
My son's mother.
The woman who died shortly after giving birth.
A subject I rarely discussed because the pain was still there.
"What does she have to do with this?""
Andrew was silent.
Then he said:
"Everything.""
I met Andrew Collins two hours later at an old coffee shop outside the city.
I didn't want to.
Every instinct told me not to trust a stranger who claimed to know my family's secrets.
But he knew about Ethan.
And my son came first.
When I walked in, I recognized him immediately.
Older than the pictures I had seen.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
The kind of face that looked like it had carried regret for a long time.
He stood when he saw me.
"Daniel.""
I didn't sit.
"Where is my son?""
Andrew nodded.
"I'll tell you.""
"Now.""
"He is with my daughter.""
I stared at him.
"Your daughter?""
"Yes.""
"Why would Ethan be with your daughter?""
Andrew looked down.
"Because she is the only person Ethan knows who was connected to his mother.""
I felt confused.
"My wife didn't have family nearby.""
Andrew looked at me carefully.
"That is what you were told.""
The words hit me.
"What does that mean?""
He sat down.
I remained standing for another moment.
Then I sat.
"Start talking.""
Andrew took a breath.
"Ethan's mother, Sarah, had a sister.""
I frowned.
"I never knew.""
"Because Sarah was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Andrew looked at me.
"Of losing Ethan.""
The room became quiet.
"She knew something about your family.""
"My family?""
"About the trust.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Daniel, before Sarah died, she discovered that someone was trying to access information about your father's assets.""
I thought about Claire.
Marcus.
Thomas.
"Who?""
Andrew looked away.
"At first, she didn't know.""
"Then?""
"Then she found out.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer immediately.
And I knew I wasn't going to like it.
"Your brother.""
My chest tightened.
"Thomas?""
Andrew nodded.
"No.""
I stared at him.
"No?""
"Not alone.""
I waited.
"Your father knew Thomas had financial problems.""
I frowned.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
Memories came back.
Thomas asking about investments.
Thomas complaining about debt years ago.
Thomas suddenly becoming interested in my father's estate.
Andrew continued.
"Your father didn't want to accuse his own son without proof.""
"So he created the trust.""
"Yes.""
"To protect Ethan?""
"To protect Ethan from everyone.""
The words were painful.
Everyone.
Even family.
I looked down.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Andrew gave a sad smile.
"Because your father was afraid you would choose loyalty over truth.""
That hurt because it sounded exactly like him.
My father knew me.
Too well.
"What happened to Sarah?""
Andrew looked at his hands.
"She found evidence.""
My stomach tightened.
"What evidence?""
"Proof that someone had been trying to alter the trust.""
"Who?""
"Marcus.""
I looked up.
"Marcus Vale?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Marcus believed your father's trust was unfair.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
Andrew leaned forward.
"Marcus believed Thomas deserved control because he was the oldest child.""
My mind raced.
"So this started years ago?""
"Yes.""
"Then why involve Claire?""
Andrew looked at me.
"Because Claire was easy to convince.""
I felt a painful knot in my chest.
Easy to convince.
That was somehow worse.
Because it meant she wasn't the beginning.
She was a piece.
A tool.
"Where is Ethan?""
Andrew took out his phone.
He showed me a picture.
Ethan was sitting at a kitchen table.
Eating.
Smiling.
Actually smiling.
For the first time in days, I saw my son look like a child again.
My anger softened.
"He's okay.""
"Yes.""
"Why did he leave with you?""
Andrew looked at me.
"Because someone told him he needed to.""
"Who?""
Andrew hesitated.
Then:
"Claire.""
My hands curled.
"What?""
"Before I called you, Claire contacted my daughter.""
"Why?""
"Because she knew things were falling apart.""
I stood.
"Where is Claire?""
Andrew looked surprised.
"She's not with you?""
"No.""
He looked concerned.
"Then you need to understand something.""
"What?""
"Claire wasn't trying to disappear.""
"Then what?""
"She was trying to make sure Ethan was gone before you found the truth.""
The words hit me.
"Why?""
"Because if Ethan is not in the house, she can claim you were unable to protect him.""
My blood ran cold.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It does legally.""
"Explain.""
Andrew looked at me.
"If someone argues that a parent created an unsafe environment, they can challenge custody.""
I stared at him.
"She would do that?""
Andrew didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
My phone suddenly rang.
Robert.
I answered.
"Robert?""
His voice was urgent.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"With someone who knows about the trust.""
Silence.
Then:
"Who?""
I looked at Andrew.
"Andrew Collins.""
The silence on the line changed.
"Daniel, leave.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What?""
"Leave wherever you are.""
"Why?""
"Because Andrew Collins is not who you think he is.""
Andrew watched my face.
"What did he say?""
I ignored him.
"Robert, explain.""
His voice became lower.
"Daniel, Andrew Collins was investigated years ago.""
"For what?""
Another pause.
Then:
"For helping someone access your father's estate.""
I looked at Andrew.
He looked back at me.
And suddenly the man who claimed to be protecting my son felt like another mystery.
"Robert.""
"Daniel, get Ethan back and don't trust anyone until we know the truth.""
The call ended.
I looked at Andrew.
"You knew this would happen.""
He didn't deny it.
"What happened to you, Daniel?""
"What?""
"Your father asked the same question.""
I froze.
"What are you talking about?""
Andrew slowly reached into his bag.
He pulled out an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
In my father's handwriting.
I stopped breathing.
"Your father left this with me before he died.""
I stared at the envelope.
"Why didn't you give it to me?""
"Because he told me not to.""
"Why?""
Andrew looked at me.
"Because he said you would only understand after someone tried to take Ethan away.""
My hands shook as I reached for it.
The envelope was old.
Sealed.
Waiting.
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only one paragraph.
Daniel,
If Andrew is the one who gives you this letter, then the danger is not who you think it is.
Trust the person who protects Ethan when everyone else chooses the inheritance.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
And slowly looked up.
Because suddenly I realized something.
My father wasn't warning me about Andrew.
He was warning me about everyone else.
But before I could ask another question, Andrew's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What is it?""
He didn't answer.
He just turned the phone toward me.
A message had appeared.
From an unknown number.
Three words.
"She found Ethan.""
May you like
And below it was a photo.
A photo of Claire standing outside the house where my son was staying.
