Chapter 6: The Person Who Started the Plan
The name at the bottom of the email made my hands go numb.
I read it once.
Then I read it again.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
The person who authorized the entire plan wasn't Claire.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't even Thomas.
It was someone I thought had been protecting my family.
Someone who was no longer alive to defend himself.
My father.
But the signature wasn't his.
It was a reference to an old instruction letter.
A letter my father had written before his death.
And according to Marcus's email, that letter was the reason they believed they could control Ethan's inheritance.
I looked at the page again.
The words blurred together.
"Once Daniel signs the guardianship transfer, Ethan will have no legal ability to challenge the trust. The conditions set by Edward Reed will finally be satisfied.""
Edward Reed.
My father's name.
I felt like the ground had shifted beneath me.
"What does it mean?""
Ethan's voice pulled me back.
I looked at my son.
He was standing there holding onto his sleeve, waiting for an answer.
An answer I didn't have.
I folded the paper immediately.
"Nothing you need to worry about.""
But Ethan wasn't a little kid anymore.
Not emotionally.
Not after everything he had been forced to hear.
"Is it about me?""
I hated that he asked that.
Because he shouldn't have to.
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
I walked over and knelt down.
"Yes.""
He looked into my eyes.
"Mom always says things are because of me.""
My heart broke.
"Ethan, listen to me.""
He waited.
"Adults sometimes make mistakes. Sometimes they make bad choices. But none of that is because of you.""
He nodded slowly.
But I could tell he didn't fully believe it.
Because someone had spent months teaching him to doubt his own worth.
I looked over at Thomas.
He hadn't moved.
He looked at the paper in my hand like he already knew what it said.
"Thomas.""
He looked up.
"What exactly was my father trying to do?""
His face tightened.
"I don't know everything.""
"Try.""
He sat down.
For the first time since he arrived, he looked less like my brother and more like someone carrying a burden.
"Your father was worried.""
"About what?""
"About what would happen after he died.""
I frowned.
"To Ethan?""
"To the family.""
I shook my head.
"No. Tell me the truth.""
Thomas looked away.
"He didn't trust everyone around him.""
The words were painful.
Because my father had always been someone who believed in people.
"What does that mean?""
Thomas took a breath.
"Your father knew the trust would make Ethan a target.""
"And he created a solution?""
"Yes.""
"What solution?""
Thomas looked at the floor.
"He created conditions.""
I waited.
"What conditions?""
"That Ethan's inheritance would stay protected unless certain requirements were met.""
"Such as?""
Thomas didn't answer.
"Thomas.""
He finally looked at me.
"Such as making sure the people around Ethan could be trusted.""
The room went silent.
I looked at the document again.
"Then why are Claire and Marcus trying to make me sign something?""
Thomas rubbed his forehead.
"Because they think the guardianship transfer would trigger a different part of the agreement.""
"What part?""
He swallowed.
"The part where control changes.""
My stomach tightened.
"Control changes to who?""
Thomas didn't answer.
And I knew.
"To you.""
He looked down.
"I was supposed to become temporary trustee.""
I stared at him.
"My brother.""
"Daniel.""
"You were going to control Ethan's inheritance.""
"Only until he was older.""
"Without telling me?""
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""
I laughed bitterly.
"How was it supposed to happen?""
Thomas had no answer.
Because there wasn't a good one.
The front door opened.
Claire walked in.
And the moment she saw Thomas, she stopped.
Her eyes moved between us.
Then she saw the paper in my hand.
Everything changed.
"You found it.""
Her voice was quiet.
Not surprised.
Not angry.
Just defeated.
I stood.
"You knew.""
She closed the door slowly.
"I knew you would find out eventually.""
"How long?""
Claire looked away.
"Daniel...""
"How long have you known about my father's plan?""
She didn't answer.
"How long?""
"Since before we got married.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Before we got married.
She had known.
The entire time.
"You married me knowing about Ethan's trust?""
"I married you because I loved you.""
I stared at her.
"Don't say that.""
Her face changed.
"Because it's true?""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"Because love doesn't look like this.""
She looked hurt.
But I couldn't tell if it was real.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She stepped closer.
"Your father was afraid Ethan would grow up spoiled. He created rules. Complicated rules.""
"And your solution was to convince my son he didn't belong?""
Her eyes dropped.
For a second.
Only a second.
But I saw it.
Guilt.
Then it disappeared.
"That wasn't the plan.""
"Then what was?""
She didn't answer.
I walked toward her.
"What was the plan, Claire?""
She took a breath.
"The plan was to make sure Ethan couldn't access everything immediately.""
"By hurting him?""
"No.""
"By making him feel unwanted?""
Her silence answered.
I felt something inside me break.
The person I loved had watched my child suffer.
And she had called it a plan.
"You let him eat on the floor.""
Her eyes filled slightly.
"That was a mistake.""
"No.""
My voice became cold.
"That was a choice.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas said quietly:
"Daniel.""
I turned.
"What?""
"You need to know the rest.""
I looked at him.
"The rest?""
He nodded.
"Your father left one more condition.""
"What condition?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then said:
"Ethan has to choose.""
I frowned.
"Choose what?""
"Who he trusts.""
The room became silent.
I didn't understand.
"Explain.""
Thomas looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
"The trust wasn't designed to protect money.""
"Then what was it designed to protect?""
"Ethan.""
I waited.
"Your father believed money could destroy families. He wanted to know if the people around Ethan cared about him or what he represented.""
My eyes moved to Claire.
Thomas continued.
"The final clause activates when Ethan turns eighteen.""
"And?""
"He has the right to remove anyone who attempted to manipulate him.""
I froze.
Remove anyone.
Meaning Claire.
Meaning Thomas.
Meaning anyone involved.
"So they couldn't take the money.""
"No.""
Thomas looked at the paper.
"They couldn't take control.""
I finally understood.
Claire wasn't trying to steal Ethan's inheritance directly.
She was trying to control the person who controlled it.
She wanted power.
And Ethan was the only thing standing in her way.
But one question remained.
"Who told Claire about the final clause?""
Nobody answered.
Then Claire whispered:
"Marcus.""
I looked at her.
"Why would Marcus tell you?""
Her face changed.
Fear returned.
Not of me.
Of someone else.
"Because he wasn't helping me.""
The room went quiet.
"What do you mean?""
Claire looked toward the window.
"He was helping someone above me.""
"Who?""
She swallowed.
"I don't know.""
I stepped closer.
"Claire.""
She finally looked at me.
"The person who contacted Marcus never used a name.""
"Then how did you communicate?""
"Through messages.""
"From where?""
Her voice dropped.
"An anonymous account.""
I stared at her.
"You're telling me you don't know who was behind this?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
"I thought I was part of the plan.""
"And now?""
She looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
"Now I think I was just another person being used.""
My phone suddenly rang.
Robert.
I answered.
"Robert?""
His voice was urgent.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"Home.""
"You need to listen carefully.""
"What happened?""
"I found the original trust amendment.""
I looked at Thomas.
"And?""
A pause.
Then Robert said:
"The document Claire has been searching for isn't about Ethan's inheritance.""
My heart stopped.
"What is it about?""
His voice became quieter.
"It's about who your father believed was responsible if anything happened to Ethan.""
I felt cold.
"What are you saying?""
"Daniel...""
"Tell me.""
Another pause.
Then:
"Your father named the person who would be investigated first.""
I looked around the room.
At Claire.
At Thomas.
At Ethan.
"Who?""
Robert answered.
And the name he said made every person in the room freeze.
May you like
Because it was someone none of us expected.
"Daniel, your father named you.""
