Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Call
The name on the screen made my stomach drop.
I stared at it for several seconds, hoping my eyes had made a mistake.
But they hadn't.
The caller ID showed a name I hadn't seen in years.
Marcus Vale.
My wife's former attorney.
And my older brother's closest friend.
I sat frozen in front of the computer, listening to the recording again.
"If he believes he has no inheritance, he'll stop asking questions.""
Claire's voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
Like she wasn't talking about a child.
Like she was discussing a business problem.
I replayed the video three more times.
Each time, the same anger rose in my chest.
But beneath the anger was something worse.
Confusion.
Because Marcus wasn't just some random person.
He knew my family.
He knew my father.
He knew exactly what Ethan was entitled to.
I closed the laptop when I heard the garage door open.
Claire was home.
I quickly turned off the monitor and sat back.
A few seconds later, she walked into the room carrying shopping bags.
She looked relaxed.
Almost happy.
Like she hadn't spent the morning trying to erase my son's place in our family.
"Hey," she said.
"You didn't answer my texts.""
I looked at her.
"I was busy.""
She smiled slightly.
"Still upset about yesterday?""
I didn't respond.
She placed the bags on the counter.
"I bought groceries. I thought maybe we could make dinner together tonight.""
The normal tone bothered me more than if she had screamed.
She was acting like nothing happened.
Like Ethan wasn't upstairs wondering if his own father still wanted him.
"I have a question," I said.
Claire stopped.
"What kind of question?""
"Why were you talking to Marcus Vale?""
Her expression changed instantly.
Not dramatically.
Not enough for someone who didn't know her.
But I knew her.
Her hand froze on the grocery bag.
"Marcus?""
"Yes.""
"Why would I be talking to him?""
I held her gaze.
"That's what I'm asking.""
She looked away.
"I haven't spoken to Marcus in years.""
"That's not true.""
A silence filled the room.
Claire slowly turned back toward me.
"What are you implying?""
I watched her carefully.
"I'm asking why you were discussing Ethan's inheritance with him.""
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she laughed.
A short, nervous laugh.
"Daniel, what are you talking about?""
"I heard the recording.""
Her face lost all color.
"What recording?""
"The one from the kitchen.""
The silence that followed felt heavy.
Claire stared at me.
Then she whispered:
"You went through the cameras?""
I ignored the question.
"You lied to me.""
She shook her head.
"No. You misunderstood what you saw.""
"Did you or did you not say, 'If he believes he has no inheritance, he'll stop asking questions'?""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You are spying on me.""
That was her answer.
Not an explanation.
Not an apology.
An accusation.
I stood up.
"Why are you more upset that I found out than about what you said?""
Claire crossed her arms.
"Because you are twisting everything.""
"Then explain it.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time since I met her, Claire looked unprepared.
Then she took a breath.
"Marcus and I were discussing Ethan's behavior.""
"His behavior?""
"Yes.""
"And that has something to do with inheritance?""
She looked frustrated.
"Daniel, you don't understand how difficult this has become.""
"What has become difficult?""
"Everything.""
She walked closer.
"You think Ethan is innocent because he's your son. But you don't see what happens when you're not around.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What happens?""
"He manipulates you.""
I stared at her.
"He's nine.""
"Nine-year-olds can still learn how to get attention.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Ethan thinks you don't love him.""
"Because you keep making him feel like a victim.""
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because they weren't just cruel.
They were calculated.
She was trying to make me question my own child.
I walked upstairs.
I didn't want to argue anymore.
I wanted to see Ethan.
When I opened his bedroom door, he was sitting on his bed with his school backpack beside him.
He looked up.
"Dad?""
I sat beside him.
"Hey.""
He looked at my face.
"Are you mad at me?""
The question immediately broke something inside me.
"No.""
"Mom said you might be.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
Ethan picked at a loose thread on his blanket.
"She said when you found out what I did, you'd be disappointed.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she say you did?""
He shrugged.
"I don't know.""
"Ethan.""
He looked down.
"She just says I make things harder.""
I took his hand.
"Tell me the truth. Has Mom ever said you don't belong here?""
His fingers went still.
That was enough.
I already knew.
But I needed him to say it.
"Sometimes.""
My voice became quieter.
"When?""
He swallowed.
"After Noah got his new room.""
I frowned.
"New room?""
Ethan nodded.
"He said I had to move my things because his room was bigger.""
"When did this happen?""
"A few months ago.""
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Claire had told me Ethan wanted to move rooms because he liked being closer to the stairs.
She had made it sound like his choice.
Not something forced on him.
"What else?""
Ethan hesitated.
"Dad...""
"It's okay.""
He looked at the floor.
"Mom said Noah's family was here first.""
I felt my hands clench.
"She said that?""
"She said this house was supposed to be for us.""
"For who?""
He whispered:
"Her and Noah.""
I closed my eyes.
A thousand moments suddenly looked different.
The little things I had ignored.
The separate meals.
The different rules.
The way Ethan stopped asking Claire for help.
The way he became quieter every month.
I had thought he was adjusting.
I had been wrong.
A knock came at the door.
Claire stood there.
"Can I talk to you?""
I stood up.
"No.""
Her face hardened.
"I think we need to.""
"You should have thought about that before.""
She glanced at Ethan.
"Ethan, can you give us a minute?""
"No.""
The answer surprised all of us.
Ethan looked at her.
"I'm staying.""
Claire's expression turned cold.
"Ethan.""
I stepped between them.
"He's staying.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Claire smiled.
But it wasn't a warm smile.
It was the kind someone gives when they decide to stop pretending.
"Fine.""
She walked away.
That night, I didn't sleep.
I watched every camera recording.
Every day.
Every conversation.
Every moment I had missed.
And slowly, the truth appeared.
Claire wasn't just favoring Noah.
She was creating a separation.
She bought Noah expensive clothes and told Ethan they needed to save money.
She celebrated Noah's achievements but ignored Ethan's.
She told Ethan he needed to be grateful because "he wasn't the owner of everything.""
That phrase kept repeating.
Not the owner.
Everything led back to inheritance.
At 2:17 in the morning, I found another recording.
This one was from my office.
I watched Claire enter while I was at work.
She opened my desk drawer.
Then she removed a folder.
My father's estate documents.
I sat forward.
My heart started racing.
I had kept those documents locked away.
Only three people knew about them.
Me.
My attorney.
And Claire.
The recording showed her holding the papers and taking photos with her phone.
Then she made a call.
Not Marcus this time.
Someone else.
She said:
"I found them.""
A man's voice answered.
I couldn't hear everything.
The audio was unclear.
Then Claire said something that made me stand up.
"Don't worry. Once Daniel believes Ethan isn't entitled to anything, he'll sign whatever we need.""
I paused the video.
My hands were shaking.
Whatever we need.
Not whatever I need.
We.
Someone else was involved.
Someone planning this with her.
I checked the timestamp.
The recording was from six weeks earlier.
Six weeks.
For six weeks, my wife had been working against my son.
I kept watching.
The call ended.
Claire placed the documents back.
Then she turned toward the camera.
And for a second, it looked like she knew it was there.
Like she was looking directly at me.
But that was impossible.
She couldn't have known.
Could she?
The next morning, I made a decision.
I didn't confront her.
Not yet.
Because anger would only warn her.
And if Claire was willing to manipulate a child for money, I needed to know how far she was willing to go.
I needed proof.
I needed answers.
Most importantly, I needed to know exactly what she was trying to take from Ethan.
So I called my attorney.
The moment he answered, I asked one question.
"Can you tell me if my father's estate has ever been changed?""
There was a long pause.
Then his voice became serious.
"Daniel... why are you asking that?""
"Because I think someone is trying to make my son believe he has nothing.""
Another silence.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Daniel, you need to come in today.""
"Why?""
"Because six weeks ago, someone requested a copy of the original documents.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who requested them?""
My attorney hesitated.
Then he answered.
"The request came from someone using your wife's name.""
I looked across the room.
Claire was standing in the doorway.
Watching me.
And she knew.
May you like
Somehow...
She knew I had started looking.
