Chapter 9: The Man Who Had Been Pulling the Strings
The name on my phone belonged to Richard Hale.
My father's attorney.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man who had helped me establish Caleb's trust.
The man who had advised me after Danielle died.
For twelve years, I had trusted him.
He had stood beside my father during the final months of his illness.
He had explained the estate documents to me.
He had even recommended David when I needed a business attorney.
And now someone was suggesting that he had helped Daniel and Vanessa access my family's money.
I looked at David.
“Tell me this isn't possible.””
David didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he opened the original estate agreement.
“Marcus, your father had several business arrangements before he died. Some were legitimate. Others were structured in ways I haven't fully understood.””
“Richard handled all of them.””
“Yes.””
“Then call him.””
David shook his head.
“Not yet.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if he is involved, warning him could destroy evidence.””
I stared at the phone.
The anonymous message had come from someone who knew Vanessa and Daniel were at the airport.
“Who sent this?””
“We need to find out.””
I typed a reply.
*WHO ARE YOU?*
The response came almost immediately.
*SOMEONE WHO WORKED FOR YOUR FATHER. SOMEONE WHO SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN YEARS AGO.*
I typed again.
*WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT RICHARD HALE?*
The reply took almost a minute.
Then:
*HE DIDN'T JUST HELP DANIEL GET ACCESS TO THE ESTATE. HE HELPED HIM BUILD THE COMPANY THAT YOUR FATHER THOUGHT HE HAD DESTROYED.*
I felt a chill move through my body.
Another message followed.
*CHECK THE ORIGINAL PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT. LOOK AT THE WITNESS SIGNATURE.*
I turned to David.
He reopened the scanned document.
We enlarged the bottom section.
There were two witness signatures.
One belonged to Richard Hale.
The other belonged to a man named Thomas Briggs.
I recognized the second name.
Thomas had been my father's financial controller.
He had disappeared from the company shortly before my father died.
I looked at David.
“Can you find him?””
David nodded.
“I'm already trying.””
The following morning, I received a call from Detective Bennett.
“Mr. Reed, we need to speak with you.””
“About Vanessa?””
“About Daniel Cole.””
I sat down.
“What happened?””
“We located the flight information you provided. Daniel's reservation was canceled overnight.””
“Did he leave?””
“No. But we have information suggesting he is attempting to transfer funds from a business account.””
I looked at David.
He immediately opened his laptop.
Detective Bennett continued.
“We're also reviewing the historical evidence relating to your wife's accident. We have requested the original maintenance records and are arranging interviews with the former delivery company employees.””
“Peter Lawson?””
“We have located him. He's cooperating.””
I exhaled.
“Good.””
Then she said:
“There's something else. The company that leased the black SUV was dissolved shortly after the accident.””
“Who dissolved it?””
“Richard Hale signed the final filing.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at David.
He mouthed the name.
Richard.
Detective Bennett continued.
“We're not drawing conclusions yet. But we would like to know whether Richard Hale still has access to your financial records.””
“He doesn't have current access.””
“Does he have copies of older estate documents?””
“Yes.””
“Then we need to be careful.””
I thanked her and ended the call.
David closed his laptop.
“Marcus, I think we need to speak with Thomas Briggs.””
At two in the afternoon, David received a call.
He put it on speaker.
A man's voice sounded through the phone.
“Mr. Miller?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Thomas Briggs.””
David sat upright.
“Thomas, we've been trying to locate you.””
“I know.””
“Are you willing to meet?””
There was silence.
Then Thomas said:
“I'll meet Marcus Reed.””
I leaned forward.
“I'm here.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Your father asked me to protect you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why did you disappear?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of whom?””
“Richard.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
Thomas continued.
“Your father discovered that money was being moved through companies connected to Daniel Cole. He confronted Richard about it.””
“When?””
“About six months before he died.””
I looked at David.
“Did my father know Daniel?””
“Yes. Daniel was introduced to him as a business consultant. Your father believed he was helping restructure one of his investment companies.””
“And Richard?””
“Richard handled the legal side.””
I stood.
“What did they do?””
Thomas hesitated.
“They created a secondary company using a dormant account connected to your father's estate. The company was supposed to hold certain investments temporarily.””
“Who controlled it?””
“Daniel.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because Richard told your father it would protect the estate from creditors.””
“And was that true?””
“No.””
The silence was deafening.
Thomas continued.
“Your father found out shortly before he died. He wanted to terminate the agreement. But Richard told him it would take months.””
I looked at the documents.
“Did my father leave any instructions?””
“Yes.””
“What instructions?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“He told me that if anything happened to him, I was to make sure you never signed a document transferring control of the family estate.””
I stared at the phone.
“Did he explain why?””
“He said Daniel and Richard were waiting for an opportunity.””
I closed my eyes.
“An opportunity for what?””
“To gain control of the Reed assets.””
We arranged to meet Thomas at a private office belonging to David's firm.
He arrived at four thirty.
He was sixty-two, thin, and walked with a slight limp.
He carried a leather briefcase.
When he saw me, he stopped.
“Marcus.””
I shook his hand.
“Thomas.””
He looked at me for several seconds.
“You look like your father.””
I didn't know what to say.
We sat down.
Thomas opened his briefcase.
Inside were original financial statements, correspondence, and a small notebook.
He placed the notebook in front of me.
“Your father gave me this shortly before he died.””
I opened it.
The first page contained several account numbers.
The second contained names.
Richard Hale.
Daniel Cole.
And Vanessa Cole.
I looked up.
“Vanessa?””
Thomas nodded.
“She wasn't always Vanessa Reed.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
“Her maiden name was Vanessa Porter. She married Daniel Cole several years before meeting you.””
I nodded.
“I know that.””
Thomas turned another page.
“Before her marriage, she worked as an administrative assistant for a company connected to your father's estate.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She had access to certain financial records. Your father dismissed her after discovering that documents had gone missing.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Did my father tell me?””
“No. He wanted to keep you away from it.””
Thomas placed another document on the table.
It was a termination letter.
Vanessa's name was clearly printed at the top.
The date was eleven years earlier.
I stared at the signature.
My father had signed it personally.
“Why did she marry Daniel?””
Thomas looked down.
“Daniel was already involved in the financial arrangement. They were working together.””
I sat back.
“Then why did she marry me?””
Thomas didn't answer.
David leaned forward.
“Thomas, what exactly was the plan?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Your father had a substantial estate. But the controlling documents were designed to protect the money for his descendants.””
I frowned.
“Meaning Caleb?””
“Meaning you, and eventually your children.””
He pointed to a paragraph.
“When you married Danielle, the estate remained under the original structure. But after your father's death, certain business assets were supposed to be transferred into your control.””
I nodded.
“I remember.””
Thomas continued.
“Richard delayed those transfers. Then Vanessa entered your life.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
“Your father had included a provision that allowed a future spouse to receive a limited interest in certain marital assets. Richard and Daniel believed that if Vanessa married you and later established legal control over the household, they could challenge the estate structure.””
I felt sick.
“That's why they wanted Caleb removed?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your son was the direct beneficiary of the largest protected account. If they could establish that he was incapable of managing his inheritance and place him under a different guardian, they believed they could influence how the money was administered.””
David shook his head.
“That wouldn't automatically give them control.””
“No,” Thomas agreed.
“But they believed they could create enough legal pressure to force a settlement.””
I stared at him.
“And the money Daniel was expecting?””
Thomas opened another folder.
“There were payments to him from several accounts. But the biggest transfer was supposed to happen after the guardianship arrangement.””
“How much?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Three million dollars.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Three million?””
“Yes.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
My father had spent his life building that estate.
Danielle had tried to protect it.
And these people had spent years trying to take it.
I turned.
“What happened to my father?””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I don't know.””
“Do you believe Richard had something to do with his death?””
Thomas looked frightened.
“I don't know that either.””
I leaned forward.
“But you suspect something.””
He didn't answer.
His silence told me enough.
At six, Detective Bennett called again.
She had received the initial findings from the former delivery company.
The original maintenance log had been recovered.
The brake line replacement had been canceled.
And the cancellation authorization contained a signature.
Daniel Cole.
I closed my eyes.
“Can they prove it was his signature?””
“The handwriting appears consistent with other documents. A formal examination is pending.””
“What about the truck driver?””
“He is cooperating. He says he received instructions to take the truck onto the road despite the maintenance warning.””
“From Daniel?””
“We're investigating.””
I looked at David.
He nodded.
Detective Bennett continued.
“We also obtained the original witness statement from Peter Lawson. His description of the SUV is consistent with the vehicle registered to Daniel's company.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then what happens now?””
“We continue building the case. But we need to be careful. Historical evidence can be difficult to establish conclusively.””
I understood.
Nothing would bring Danielle back.
But I needed the truth.
At eight fifteen, Caleb came into my office.
He was holding a drawing.
“Daddy?””
I closed the folder.
“Hey, buddy.””
He placed the drawing on my desk.
It showed a house.
Three people stood outside.
Me.
Caleb.
And Danielle.
There was a Christmas tree in the window.
I smiled.
“That's beautiful.””
He pointed to the picture of Danielle.
“That's Mommy.””
“I know.””
Then he pointed to the space beside her.
“That's where you should stand.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“So Mommy isn't alone.””
My throat tightened.
I pulled him onto my lap.
“Buddy, I think your mother would be happy wherever she is, as long as you're safe.””
He nodded.
Then he looked at my desk.
“Daddy, are you still looking for the bad people?””
I hesitated.
“I'm trying to understand what happened.””
He thought about that.
Then he said:
“Can I tell you something I didn't tell you before?””
I held my breath.
“Of course.””
He looked down at his drawing.
“The day Mommy died, the man with the silver watch came to our car.””
I went completely still.
“What?””
“He knocked on the window.””
“Did Mommy speak to him?””
Caleb nodded.
“She told me to stay inside.””
My heart began pounding.
“What did he say?””
Caleb closed his eyes.
“I don't remember everything.””
“That's okay.””
“But he gave Mommy a piece of paper.””
I leaned closer.
“What did she do?””
“She started crying.””
I held his hand.
“Did she tell you anything?””
Caleb nodded.
“She said we had to go home another way.””
I felt cold all over.
“Did you?””
He shook his head.
“No. The truck came.””
I closed my eyes.
The delivery truck.
The damaged brakes.
The black SUV.
The man with the silver watch.
Everything was beginning to connect.
Then Caleb said something that changed the direction of the investigation.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“The man wasn't driving the black car.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
“He was standing outside it.””
“Who was driving?””
Caleb looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“A woman.””
I felt my breath catch.
“Can you remember what she looked like?””
He nodded slowly.
“She had red hair.””
I looked at David.
Neither of us spoke.
Vanessa had red hair in the photographs from three years earlier.
But there was something else.
A detail I hadn't considered.
In the photograph from the restaurant, Vanessa's hair was blonde.
In the photograph taken outside the school, the woman behind the wheel had a red scarf covering part of her face.
I looked at Caleb.
“Are you sure, buddy?””
He nodded.
“She looked at me.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“And she smiled.””
At nine thirty, David received a message from Detective Bennett.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
“Marcus, they found the woman who rented the black SUV.””
“Who?””
He turned the laptop toward me.
A photograph appeared.
The woman had dark red hair.
Her name was printed beneath it.
*Evelyn Shaw.*
I didn't recognize her.
David opened another file.
It contained an old employment record.
Evelyn Shaw had worked as a private assistant for Richard Hale.
And according to the record, she had been dismissed three months after Danielle's accident.
I stared at the photograph.
“Where is she now?””
David checked the latest information.
“She lives in Connecticut.””
I picked up my phone.
Then another message appeared.
This one came from the anonymous number that had first contacted me.
*YOU ARE GETTING CLOSER. BUT THERE IS ONE PERSON YOU STILL HAVEN'T QUESTIONED.*
I typed:
*WHO?*
The answer came immediately.
*YOUR MOTHER.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I read the next message.
*ASK HER WHAT DANIELLE TOLD HER THE NIGHT BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.*
My hands went cold.
I looked at David.
“Call my mother.””
He did.
No answer.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Then my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom?””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Marcus…”
“What's wrong?””
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“Are you safe?””
She began crying.
“I'm sorry I didn't tell you before.””
“Tell me what?””
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
“Danielle came to see me the night before the accident.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did she tell you?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“She said Vanessa had approached her with a proposal.””
“What proposal?””
“She wanted Danielle to sign away her rights to the family estate.””
I gripped the phone.
“And what did Danielle say?””
“She refused.””
My mother began sobbing.
“Then she told me something else.””
“What?””
“She said Vanessa had threatened her.””
I couldn't speak.
My mother continued.
“She said if Danielle didn't disappear from your life, they would make sure she regretted it.””
The room went silent.
Then my mother whispered the words that would haunt me forever.
“Marcus, your first wife didn't just fear Vanessa.””
May you like
She paused.
“She feared that Vanessa was planning to kill her.””
