Chapter 8: The Witness Who Had Been Hiding for Three Years

I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

“Peter, repeat that.””

“The truck's braking system had been tampered with.””

I looked at David.

He had stopped writing.

“Are you saying the accident wasn't accidental?””

“I can't say that for certain. But I know what I saw.””

“Tell me everything.””

Peter took a shaky breath.

“I was a mechanic for the delivery company. I inspected the truck two days before the accident. There was a problem with the brake line.””

My stomach tightened.

“Was it repaired?””

“It should have been. But the repair order was canceled.””

“Who canceled it?””

Peter hesitated.

“Daniel Cole.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“He said the truck had to be back on the road immediately. He told the manager the company couldn't afford another delay.””

I looked at David.

He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

David introduced himself and asked Peter to explain the circumstances.

Peter continued.

“I told my supervisor the truck wasn't safe. He said Daniel had already approved it.””

“Did you report the problem?”” David asked.

“Yes. I wrote an internal maintenance note.””

“Do you still have a copy?””

“I kept one.””

“Why?””

Peter gave a bitter laugh.

“Because I knew something wasn't right.””

I leaned toward the phone.

“Peter, did you see Daniel near my wife's car?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The afternoon of the accident. I was outside the school waiting for my nephew. I saw a black SUV parked across the street.””

“Was Daniel inside?””

“I couldn't see his face clearly. But I recognized the vehicle.””

“Did you see him follow Danielle?””

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

Peter continued.

“I saw the SUV pull out behind her. I thought it was a coincidence until I heard about the accident.””

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“I did.””

David interrupted.

“Your statement is in the file, but it doesn't identify the driver.””

“Because I was threatened before the second interview.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“By whom?””

“Daniel's associate. He came to my house and showed me photographs of my children.””

Peter's voice cracked.

“He told me accidents happened to people who talked too much.””

Silence filled the room.

I looked at David.

He had already written down the motel location.

“Peter,” I said, “are you willing to provide a formal statement?””

“Yes.””

“Then we'll arrange proper protection and make sure the authorities receive everything.””

Peter exhaled.

“Mr. Reed, there's another reason I called.””

“What?””

“I found something in the truck maintenance records.””

“What?””

“The repair order wasn't just canceled.””

He paused.

“Someone replaced the original brake line with a damaged one from another vehicle.””

David stood.

“Do you have proof?””

“I have photographs and the original maintenance log.””

My mouth went dry.

“Peter, where are those records?””

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

“In a storage unit. I can bring them.””

David immediately interrupted.

“Don't move anything. We need to coordinate with investigators so the evidence is preserved properly.””

Peter agreed.

Before ending the call, I asked one final question.

“Why are you contacting me now?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because I saw your son on television last night.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your wife posted a Christmas family photograph. She was smiling beside you and the children. But I recognized Caleb.””

I looked at the phone.

Peter continued.

“I remembered seeing him at the school that afternoon, standing beside his mother. And I realized the little boy had spent three years believing he caused something that might have been deliberately arranged.””

I closed my eyes.

“Thank you for calling.””

Then he said:

“Mr. Reed, don't trust Daniel. And don't trust Vanessa.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

David picked up his coat.

“We need to contact the authorities immediately.””

I nodded.

“Do it.””

At eleven thirty, two investigators arrived at my house.

They were Detective Laura Bennett and Detective James Carter.

Both were assigned to review the newly surfaced evidence.

I showed them the photographs, the letter, the medical report, and the recordings.

They listened carefully.

Detective Bennett looked particularly concerned when she watched the video of Vanessa telling Caleb his mother had died because of him.

“Has the child been evaluated by a professional?”” she asked.

“Yes. We're arranging appropriate support.””

“Good. We need to make sure he isn't exposed to further questioning or confrontation.””

I nodded.

Detective Carter examined the photograph of Daniel beside Danielle.

“Do you know when this was taken?””

“Three years before the accident.””

“Who gave it to you?””

“My wife.””

He looked up.

“Why?””

“She claimed Danielle had secrets.””

The detective studied the photograph again.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

He pointed to the background.

“That's not an ordinary restaurant.””

I leaned closer.

“What's special about it?””

“It's the private dining area of a business club. Membership records may help establish who was meeting whom.””

David immediately made a note.

Detective Bennett looked at the insurance documents.

“We'll need the original policy records, the trust records, and all communications involving the attempted changes.””

I nodded.

“Whatever you need.””

She closed the folder.

“Mr. Reed, I need to ask something difficult. Has your wife ever had access to your first wife's personal documents?””

“Yes. After we married, she had access to most household files.””

“Did she have access to Danielle's old correspondence?””

I thought about it.

“Some of it was in storage.””

“Could she have seen the letter your mother found?””

“I don't know.””

Detective Bennett nodded.

“That's something we'll investigate.””

Then her expression became serious.

“There's one more issue. We have received information that Vanessa may be planning to leave the state.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“We don't know yet.””

I immediately called David.

He was already checking.

A few minutes later, he looked up.

“Marcus, Daniel booked two one-way flights this morning.””

“To where?””

“Miami.””

“Both of them?””

David nodded.

“Vanessa and Daniel.””

I looked at the detectives.

They exchanged a glance.

Detective Carter stood.

“We'll need to verify that information.””

At three in the afternoon, Caleb was sitting with my mother in the living room.

They were decorating gingerbread cookies.

My mother had covered the table with flour.

Caleb had icing on his nose.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then he looked at me.

“Daddy, can I show you something?””

“Of course.””

He ran upstairs.

A minute later, he returned carrying a small blue backpack.

“I found this in my old room.””

I recognized it.

It was the backpack Danielle had packed for him on the day of the accident.

I hadn't seen it in three years.

Caleb placed it on the table.

“Grandma said I could keep it.””

I sat down.

“That's right.””

He opened the front pocket.

Inside were several old crayons, a small toy dinosaur, and a folded piece of paper.

He pulled it out.

“What's this?””

I unfolded it.

It was a shopping list written in Danielle's handwriting.

Milk.

Bread.

Apples.

Christmas wrapping paper.

And at the bottom:

*Caleb's favorite chocolate cookies.*

My eyes burned.

“She wrote this on the day of the accident,” I whispered.

Caleb smiled.

“She was going to buy me cookies.””

I nodded.

“Yes, buddy.””

He looked at the list.

Then he said:

“I remember something else.””

I crouched.

“What?””

“Mommy put something in my backpack.””

I stared at him.

“What did she put?””

He reached into a small side pocket.

His fingers searched around.

Then he pulled out a tiny silver key.

It was attached to a faded plastic tag.

The number 214 was printed on it.

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

“Marcus…”

I turned the key over.

There was a small engraving.

*RIVERSTONE STORAGE.*

I called David immediately.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

He examined the key.

“Do you know this facility?””

“No.””

He searched the name.

There was a storage company about fifteen minutes from the school Danielle had attended that afternoon.

We called the facility.

They confirmed that unit 214 had been rented under Danielle's name.

The rental had been paid for six months in advance.

Then abandoned after her death.

I stared at the key.

“What's inside?””

The manager couldn't tell us over the phone.

David advised contacting the investigators.

Within an hour, Detective Bennett arranged for us to visit the facility.

The storage unit was at the end of a narrow corridor.

The air smelled of dust and old cardboard.

A security camera blinked above the entrance.

The manager unlocked the main door.

Then I inserted Danielle's key into unit 214.

It turned.

The metal shutter rolled upward.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, a small suitcase, and an old laptop.

I stepped inside.

Everything was covered in a thin layer of dust.

David opened the first box.

It contained photographs.

Some showed Danielle and Caleb.

Others showed Vanessa and Daniel at different locations.

I picked up one photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside our former house.

The date on the back was two months before Danielle died.

I looked at David.

“Why was he there?””

David didn't answer.

Detective Bennett opened another box.

Inside were printed emails and bank statements.

She began photographing everything.

Then I noticed a sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

*MARCUS — OPEN ONLY IF I CANNOT TELL YOU MYSELF.*

My hands began trembling.

I opened it.

The letter was dated three days before the accident.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, something has happened, and I need you to know that I tried to protect you and Caleb.

I discovered that Vanessa and Daniel have been working together for longer than either of them admitted.

I also found out that Daniel has been using people connected to your company to obtain confidential financial information.

I don't know exactly what they want.

But I believe they are interested in the money your father left for Caleb.

I stopped.

My father?

I continued.

I have copies of the documents. I've hidden them somewhere Daniel won't think to look.

Please don't confront Vanessa until you understand everything.

And Marcus, if you ever doubt whether I loved you, remember that every decision I made was to protect our little boy.

Love always,

Danielle.

I lowered the letter.

The room seemed to spin.

My wife had known.

She had discovered something about Vanessa and Daniel.

And she had tried to warn me.

Detective Bennett approached.

“Mr. Reed, there's something else.””

She held up a small black notebook.

“Your wife's name appears repeatedly in these notes.””

I took it.

The pages were filled with dates, names, and handwritten financial figures.

On the final page, Danielle had written one sentence in capital letters.

*THEY ARE NOT AFTER THE MONEY ALONE. THEY NEED MARCUS TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE COMPANY.*

I stared at the words.

Then David opened the old laptop.

It powered on after several attempts.

There was one folder on the desktop.

Its name was:

*PROJECT CHRISTMAS.*

Inside were several documents.

The first was a list of financial transfers.

The second was a collection of emails.

And the third was a scanned document bearing my father's signature.

David opened it.

His expression changed.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

He pointed to the document.

It was a business agreement dated twelve years earlier.

My father had established a private investment arrangement with another company.

A company owned by Daniel Cole.

I stared at the screen.

“Why would my father have a deal with him?””

David scrolled down.

Then he looked at me.

“Because Daniel wasn't just Vanessa's former husband.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

David turned the screen toward me.

“He was one of your father's business partners.””

We left the storage facility after dark.

I couldn't stop thinking about the documents.

My father had died before I married Vanessa.

I had never known he was connected to Daniel.

And Danielle had discovered the connection shortly before she died.

When I reached home, Caleb was asleep.

I stood beside his bed for several minutes.

His stuffed rabbit was tucked beneath his arm.

His little wooden star was visible through the open bedroom door, hanging from the Christmas tree downstairs.

I kissed his forehead.

Then I went into my office.

David was waiting.

He had been examining the documents.

“Marcus, there's something you need to see.””

He opened a scanned email.

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was my father.

The date was twelve years earlier.

The subject line read:

*THE REED ESTATE ARRANGEMENT.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My father's estate had included a private investment account that was supposed to remain under the control of a family trustee.

But the agreement contained a hidden clause.

If certain ownership conditions were met, control of the account could pass to a designated business partner.

The name of that partner was Daniel Cole.

I looked at David.

“Why would my father agree to that?””

David scrolled farther down.

At the bottom of the email was a sentence written by Daniel.

*Once Marcus marries and establishes a family household, the remaining conditions can be satisfied.*

I stared at the screen.

My father had died twelve years earlier.

Danielle had died three years earlier.

Vanessa had entered my life eighteen months after that.

And now I was beginning to understand why she had been so determined to marry me.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Vanessa standing inside an airport terminal.

Beside her was Daniel.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*MR. REED, YOUR WIFE AND DANIEL ARE LEAVING TONIGHT. BUT BEFORE THEY GO, YOU SHOULD KNOW THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO HELPED THEM GET ACCESS TO YOUR FATHER'S ESTATE.*

A second message arrived.

*IT WASN'T YOUR WIFE.*

Then a name appeared.

*YOUR FATHER'S LAWYER.*

I looked at David.

He slowly lowered his laptop.

Because we both recognized the name.

May you like

It belonged to the man who had managed my father's estate.

And the same man who had advised me when I first married Vanessa.
