Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Calls
The silence that followed Ms. Bennett's words was heavier than anything I had ever felt.
"The same voice?"" my father repeated.
Ms. Bennett nodded.
She stood on our doorstep holding the folder against her chest, her expression professional but careful. Like she knew she was standing in the middle of a family explosion.
"The university records all calls involving scholarship changes," she explained.
"Especially when a student is requesting a withdrawal of a major financial award.""
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She looked frozen.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Frozen.
And that told me more than any confession could have.
My father noticed too.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at him.
"Say something.""
Her lips parted.
"This is insane.""
Ms. Bennett didn't react.
"The caller identified herself as Maya Carter.""
My stomach twisted.
"I never called.""
"I know," Ms. Bennett said gently.
She opened the folder.
"Because the voice verification did not match Maya's.""
My father stepped forward.
"Then why are we standing here?""
Ms. Bennett looked directly at Vanessa.
"Because the second call was made after the scholarship withdrawal was processed.""
She pulled out another document.
"The caller attempted to redirect educational trust funds connected to Maya's late mother.""
I felt my chest tighten.
My mother.
Again.
It always came back to her.
The person who was gone was somehow still at the center of everything happening in this house.
Vanessa shook her head.
"You have no proof.""
Ms. Bennett looked calm.
"We have call records.""
"You don't have my voice.""
A small pause.
Then Ms. Bennett said:
"We do now.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"What?""
"The first call was recorded.""
Nobody moved.
My father stared at her.
"You knew?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"No.""
But her answer came too quickly.
I watched her carefully.
She was always good at controlling her emotions.
At pretending.
But now, every crack was showing.
My father stepped away from her.
"Maya, go upstairs.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Please.""
His voice was quiet.
"I need to talk to Vanessa.""
I almost refused.
After everything?
After years of being told I was overreacting?
After being made to feel like a guest in my own home?
But something in my father's face stopped me.
He wasn't protecting Vanessa.
He was trying to understand how badly he had been betrayed.
I walked upstairs.
But I didn't close my door.
I sat on my bed and listened.
At first, their voices were low.
Then Vanessa's voice rose.
"You are seriously believing strangers over your wife?""
My father answered.
"I am believing the evidence.""
"You always wanted to think I was the villain.""
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"I wanted to believe I was right about you.""
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa spoke softly.
"You don't know what you're saying.""
"Then explain.""
Nothing.
"Explain why your voice is on that recording.""
Silence.
I covered my mouth.
For the first time in years, my father sounded broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
"You knew about the scholarship," he said.
"I knew she probably wouldn't get it.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"She didn't deserve it.""
My heart stopped.
I stood up.
My father went silent downstairs.
"What did you say?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"There it is.""
"What?""
"The look.""
Her voice became sharper.
"The same look you had when you looked at Evelyn.""
My blood ran cold.
My mother's name.
Again.
"You were jealous of my daughter because of my first wife?"" my father asked.
"No.""
Vanessa's voice shook.
"I was tired of living in her shadow.""
The room spun.
I leaned against the wall.
"I married you," she continued.
"I built a life with you. But every time Maya succeeded, you talked about Evelyn.""
"Because Evelyn was her mother.""
"And because I could never replace her.""
The words hung in the air.
I expected my father to defend Vanessa.
Instead, he said:
"No one asked you to replace her.""
Another silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"You don't understand what I gave up.""
My father's voice hardened.
"What did you do?""
No answer.
"What did you do, Vanessa?""
A door slammed downstairs.
I rushed to the hallway.
By the time I reached the stairs, Vanessa was gone.
The front door was open.
My father stood there staring outside.
"Maya.""
I walked down slowly.
"She's leaving?""
He looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I looked at the empty driveway.
"She admitted it.""
My father closed his eyes.
"I heard.""
"Why didn't you tell me about my mother's fund?""
He sat down on the bottom step.
"I thought it was gone.""
"What?""
He looked ashamed.
"After your mother died, Vanessa handled some of the paperwork. She told me the account had been closed because of taxes and legal issues.""
I stared at him.
"And you believed her?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"I was grieving.""
That answer hurt because I understood it.
But understanding didn't erase the damage.
"How much was in the fund?""
He hesitated.
"Enough to cover your entire education.""
My heart sank.
The scholarship wasn't just a lost opportunity.
It had been a backup.
A safety net.
A future.
A future someone had stolen.
That evening, Ms. Bennett returned with more information.
She sat at our kitchen table and placed several papers in front of me.
"We traced the financial records.""
I looked down.
"Did she take it?""
Ms. Bennett's expression was careful.
"Not exactly.""
"What does that mean?""
She pointed to the documents.
"The trust was never emptied.""
I blinked.
"Then where did the money go?""
She turned the page.
"It was moved.""
My father leaned closer.
"Moved where?""
Ms. Bennett tapped the account number.
"To another educational account.""
I frowned.
"Whose?""
She looked at me.
And I immediately knew I wasn't going to like the answer.
"That's what we're trying to determine.""
Then her phone buzzed.
She checked the screen.
Her expression changed.
"What?""
My father stood.
"What happened?""
She slowly looked up.
"The account holder just responded to our request for verification.""
My hands tightened.
"Who is it?""
Ms. Bennett looked at the name.
Then she looked at me.
"The account was transferred to someone connected to this family.""
My heart started pounding.
"Who?""
She turned the document around.
And there it was.
A name I had never expected to see.
A name that made my father step back.
Because it wasn't Vanessa.
May you like
It was mine.
But the signature underneath it wasn't.
