Chapter 14: The Truth My Parents Hid
I couldn't hear anything after that.
Not the sound of the wind outside.
Not the traffic in the distance.
Not the voices around me.
Only one thought repeated in my head.
*The secret was about me.*
I looked at my father.
"Tell me.""
He didn't speak.
"Dad.""
His eyes filled.
"I wanted to protect you.""
"From what?""
He looked at the DNA report.
"From something that didn't matter.""
I grabbed the paper.
"Then why hide it?""
He took a breath.
"Because your mother found out.""
My heart pounded.
"Found out what?""
My father sat down.
The strongest person I knew suddenly looked old.
"Before we married, your mother was told she might never have children.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Doctors said it was unlikely.""
I looked at him.
"Then?""
He looked at me.
"Then you came into our lives.""
I stared at the report.
The pieces weren't fitting.
"My biological father...""
The words felt strange.
My father looked at me.
"You are my daughter.""
"I didn't ask that.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
Silence.
"Your mother found out there was a possibility I wasn't your biological father.""
My hands shook.
"But you raised me.""
"Yes.""
"She knew?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the report again.
"Who is?""
My father looked away.
"I don't know.""
That answer shocked me.
"You don't know?""
"No.""
"Then why did Mom investigate?""
He closed his eyes.
"Because Vanessa found out before we did.""
My heart stopped.
"How?""
My father looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa finally spoke.
"Because I found the medical records.""
The anger returned instantly.
"You used that against my mother.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"At first, I didn't.""
Nobody believed her.
She continued.
"Your mother was afraid your father would leave if he knew.""
My father looked hurt.
"She knew I would never do that.""
"I know.""
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"That's why she changed the will.""
I stared.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Your mother didn't change it because she hated me.""
She looked at the boxes.
"She changed it because she discovered someone was trying to use the information against you.""
My breathing slowed.
"What information?""
Vanessa looked at Mrs. Collins.
"Tell her.""
Mrs. Collins looked terrified.
"I can't.""
Vanessa laughed.
"After everything?""
My father stepped forward.
"Tell us.""
Mrs. Collins closed her eyes.
"The university scholarship committee received an anonymous complaint.""
My stomach tightened.
"About what?""
"About Maya's family background.""
I felt cold.
"Someone tried to say I lied on my application?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Mrs. Collins looked at Vanessa.
"Because someone wanted the university to believe Maya was not entitled to certain opportunities.""
My father stared.
"And who started that rumor?""
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Your biological father.""
The words felt impossible.
"What?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"He found out about the DNA issue.""
I shook my head.
"I don't know him.""
"No.""
Her expression changed.
"But he knew about you.""
My father looked confused.
"How?""
Vanessa opened the original will.
Inside was a letter.
A letter from my mother.
She handed it to me.
I read.
*Maya,*
*There is a man who may come into your life one day. He may tell you he has a right to know you. Remember this: being a parent is not about biology. It is about who stays.*
My eyes filled.
The next line broke something inside me.
*Your father chose you every single day.*
I looked at my father.
He was crying.
My father.
The man who held me when I lost my mother.
The man who came to every school event.
The man who stayed.
I understood.
The DNA didn't change anything.
But someone had tried to use it to destroy us.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who is he?""
She looked away.
"I don't know where he is now.""
"But you knew about him.""
"Yes.""
"How?""
She hesitated.
"Because he contacted me.""
The room went silent.
My father stared.
"You worked with him?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"He contacted me because he wanted money.""
My stomach dropped.
"And you helped him?""
"I listened.""
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because he told me he was going to expose your family.""
I understood then.
Vanessa had been afraid.
But fear didn't excuse what she did.
"You chose yourself.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
The admission was quiet.
And devastating.
My father took the will from my hands.
"Who was he?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"His name is Michael.""
My heart stopped.
Because that name sounded familiar.
Not from my family.
From somewhere else.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Maya?""
I couldn't speak.
The voice continued.
"I think it's time you heard my side.""
My hands tightened.
"Who are you?""
A pause.
Then:
"The person your mother spent years trying to keep away from you.""
My father stepped closer.
The man continued:
"I know Vanessa told you everything.""
My blood ran cold.
"How do you know?""
Silence.
Then:
"Because she was never the only person working for me.""
The call ended.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
*Ask your father who signed my adoption papers.*
I looked at my father.
May you like
His face went completely pale.
Because he knew exactly what that meant.
