Thinking

Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Locked Door

Daniel read the note three times.

Not because he didn’t understand the words.

Because he couldn’t accept them.

*Your brother saw the truth. Now make sure he stays quiet.*

The handwriting was uneven.

The paper was ordinary.

The sentence was short.

But it carried a weight that made the entire room feel colder.

Noah stood beside him, waiting.

Lily stood behind Maria, clutching her stuffed rabbit so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

And Claire…

Claire looked like someone who had just realized a door she thought was locked had suddenly opened.

“Where did you find this?”” Daniel asked.

Noah swallowed.

“Under Lily’s pillow.””

The room went silent.

Under her pillow.

Not on a desk.

Not somewhere random.

Under the place where his six-year-old daughter rested her head every night.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Did you know about this?””

Her expression changed immediately.

“No.””

“Then why do you look scared?””

“I don’t.””

“You do.””

Claire shook her head.

“Daniel, you’re twisting everything.””

Noah stepped forward.

“No. We’re finally seeing everything.””

Claire looked at him.

“You need to stop acting like you understand things you don’t.””

Noah’s face tightened.

“I understand enough.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone wanted Lily scared.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“And you think that someone is me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was already hanging in the air.

Daniel looked down at the note again.

“Who had access to Lily’s room?””

Claire crossed her arms.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

“I said I don’t know.””

“Everyone who lives here.””

Claire looked at him.

“Are you saying I did this?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

That silence was louder than an accusation.

The police arrived that evening.

Not because Daniel wanted to make the situation bigger.

Because he had finally learned that protecting his family sometimes meant admitting something was wrong.

Detective Rachel Morgan walked through the house slowly.

She was calm.

Professional.

The kind of person who made people speak because she didn’t rush to fill silence.

She examined the camera.

The note.

The security records.

Then she turned to Daniel.

“You said the camera was discovered yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“And the note was found today?””

“Yes.””

“Same location?””

“No.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Who discovered the note?””

“My son.””

Rachel nodded.

Then looked at Noah.

“Can I ask you some questions?””

Noah glanced at Daniel.

Daniel nodded.

“Tell the truth.””

Noah sat on the couch.

Rachel sat across from him.

“Did you see anyone enter Lily’s room?””

“No.””

“Did you see anyone near the room?””

Noah thought.

Then his eyes widened slightly.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“Three days ago.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What happened three days ago?”” Daniel asked.

Noah frowned.

“I heard footsteps upstairs.””

“Whose footsteps?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why didn’t you check?””

“Because I thought it was Dad.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I wasn’t home.””

Noah’s face changed.

“I thought you were.””

Rachel wrote something down.

“What time was this?””

“Around eight.””

“Eight at night?””

“Yes.””

“Who else was home?””

Noah looked around.

“Claire.””

Claire immediately spoke.

“I was downstairs.””

Noah looked at her.

“For the whole night?””

“Yes.””

But Rachel noticed something.

“What?””

Claire looked at her.

“What?””

“You answered quickly.””

“So?””

“So people usually think before answering when remembering ordinary moments.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“I don’t like being treated like a suspect.””

Rachel calmly closed her notebook.

“Then help me rule you out.””

The next step was checking everyone’s devices.

Daniel handed over access records.

Phones.

Computers.

Security accounts.

Everything.

Claire refused at first.

“I’m not giving strangers my personal information.””

Detective Morgan looked at her.

“This isn’t about your personal information.””

“It is.””

“It’s about a device being used to monitor a child in her bedroom.””

That sentence changed the room.

Claire slowly handed over her phone.

Noah watched.

He noticed something.

Claire wasn’t angry anymore.

She was thinking.

That scared him.

While Detective Morgan reviewed the information, Daniel sat beside Lily.

She was drawing.

A family picture.

He looked at the paper.

There were four people.

Him.

Noah.

Lily.

And their mother.

Daniel’s heart sank.

“Sweetheart?””

Lily looked up.

“Yeah?””

“Why didn’t you draw Claire?””

Lily’s pencil stopped.

She looked down.

“I didn’t know if she wanted to be there.””

Daniel felt a pain in his chest.

“What do you mean?””

Lily shrugged.

“She says I remind her of Mommy.””

Daniel was silent.

“Is that bad?””

“No.””

“Sometimes she looks at me like she’s mad.””

Daniel didn’t know what to say.

Because children noticed things adults tried to hide.

Lily continued drawing.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“If I wasn’t here, would everyone be happier?””

Daniel froze.

He turned toward her.

“Never say that.””

“But—”

“Never.””

His voice cracked.

Lily looked surprised.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You are not something people have to tolerate.””

A tear fell from his eye before he could stop it.

“I’m sorry I made you feel that way.””

Lily leaned against him.

For the first time in days, she hugged him first.

And Daniel realized something painful.

He had spent so much time believing he was protecting his family.

But he hadn’t noticed the person who needed protection most.

An hour later, Detective Morgan called everyone back into the living room.

“I found something.””

Claire’s face immediately changed.

“What?””

Rachel looked at the tablet in her hand.

“The hidden camera was purchased online using a prepaid card.””

Daniel frowned.

“Can you trace it?””

“Not directly.””

“Then how did you find something?””

Rachel looked at Claire.

“Because the device was connected to a cloud account.””

Claire became still.

“And?””

“And the account was created using an email address.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Whose?””

Rachel turned the screen.

The email address appeared.

Everyone stared.

Because it belonged to someone they never expected.

Not Claire.

Not Marcus.

Not Maria.

It belonged to—

*Daniel.*

The room exploded into confusion.

“What?””

“That’s impossible.””

“I didn’t create that.””

Detective Morgan raised her hand.

“Let me finish.””

She tapped the screen.

“The account was created from another device.””

Daniel stared.

“Whose device?””

Rachel looked at the records.

“The device was registered to a phone number.””

She paused.

Then looked directly at Claire.

“Your phone number.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Claire’s face went completely pale.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Claire…”

“No.””

“You used my identity.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Noah.

At Lily.

Then suddenly, she started crying.

Not the controlled tears from before.

Real panic.

“Daniel, you have to believe me.””

He didn’t move.

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t do this.””

“Then who did?””

Claire opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A new message appeared.

Claire stared at it.

Her hands started shaking.

Daniel slowly reached out.

“Show me.””

She didn’t.

“Claire.””

After a long pause, she handed him the phone.

The message was from Marcus.

Only one sentence.

*“I told you not to let him find the account.””*

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t an explanation.

It was a confession.

And for the first time, Claire wasn’t the only person hiding something.

His brother was too.

But before Daniel could call Marcus, another message arrived.

This time, from an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

A photo taken inside their house.

A photo of Lily sleeping.

May you like

Underneath it were six words:

*“You still don’t know the truth.””*
