Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Password

Daniel stared at the computer screen as if the name in front of him might change if he looked away long enough.

It didn’t.

The name remained there.

The person who changed the security password.

The person who had access to the cameras.

The person who could enter their home records without anyone knowing.

*Marcus Hale.*

Daniel’s older brother.

Noah looked between the screen and his father’s face.

“Uncle Marcus?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

He just clicked the email again.

Then again.

Like the third time would somehow reveal a different answer.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Daniel finally said.

Noah crossed his arms.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus doesn’t live here.””

“That doesn’t mean he can’t access the system.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re saying my brother did this?””

Noah shook his head.

“I’m saying his name is on the screen.””

The room went quiet.

From the hallway came the sound of small footsteps.

Lily appeared wearing her pajamas, rubbing her eyes.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately closed the laptop.

Too quickly.

Lily noticed.

She noticed everything now.

“What happened?””

“Nothing,” Daniel said.

But his voice was different.

Lily looked at Noah.

Then at the computer.

Then back at her father.

“Is it because of me?””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

He walked toward her and knelt down.

“Lily, look at me.””

She did.

“You are not the reason adults make mistakes.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“But Claire said—”

“I know what Claire said.””

Daniel took a breath.

“And I should have listened to you sooner.””

Lily didn’t answer.

She simply stared at him.

Like she was deciding whether she could trust those words.

Daniel gently touched her shoulder.

“I mean it.””

After a moment, she nodded.

But Noah could tell.

Trust didn’t return in one conversation.

It came back slowly.

Like a broken piece of glass being carefully put together.

Daniel stood.

“I need to make a call.””

“Who?”” Noah asked.

Daniel looked at the screen again.

“Marcus.””

Marcus answered on the third ring.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded casual.

Almost too casual.

“Hey. Everything okay?””

Daniel didn’t respond immediately.

He listened.

The background was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Marcus, did you change the password on my home security account?””

A pause.

Not long.

But long enough.

“What?””

“The password.””

Another pause.

“Why would I do that?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

Noah was watching him carefully.

“Because your name is attached to the change.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“Daniel, come on. You know I wouldn’t mess with your security system.””

Daniel leaned against the desk.

“Then explain how your account changed the password.””

Silence.

Longer this time.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Maybe someone hacked it.””

“Someone using your account?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

His brother’s answer should have relieved him.

It didn’t.

Because Marcus wasn’t asking questions.

He wasn’t asking why Daniel was checking cameras.

He wasn’t asking if everyone was safe.

He was defending himself.

“Marcus.””

“Yeah?””

“Did you know what happened in the kitchen yesterday?””

The silence returned.

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“How did you know that?””

The question came too fast.

Too naturally.

Daniel felt something shift.

“I didn’t tell you what happened.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

“I heard about it.””

“From who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Claire.””

Daniel looked at Noah.

They both understood.

“Why would Claire tell you?””

“She’s my sister-in-law.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Marcus sighed.

“Daniel, you’re making this into something it’s not.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re upset and looking for someone to blame.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“I’m looking for the truth.””

For the first time, Marcus sounded irritated.

“Daniel, you need to be careful. Family problems get ugly when everyone starts accusing each other.””

Daniel looked at Lily standing in the doorway.

A six-year-old girl who had spent months believing she needed permission to belong in her own home.

“Some problems are already ugly,” Daniel said.

Then he ended the call.

Claire was waiting downstairs.

Daniel knew it before he saw her.

She was sitting in the living room with a blanket around her shoulders and a cup of tea in her hands.

She looked exhausted.

Sad.

Perfectly innocent.

It would have worked before.

Maybe yesterday.

Maybe even that morning.

But not now.

Not after hearing his daughter’s voice on that recording.

Not after seeing the security logs.

“Daniel,” Claire said softly.

He stopped.

“We need to talk.””

“Yes.””

She looked relieved.

“I’m glad.””

He remained standing.

“About what?””

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

“About Noah.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What about him?””

“He’s been disrespectful.””

Daniel said nothing.

Claire continued.

“He recorded me without permission. He’s turning Lily against me.””

There it was.

The same pattern.

A problem appeared.

Claire found someone else to blame.

“Did Noah make Lily cry?””

Claire blinked.

“What?””

“Did Noah remove her chair?””

“That’s not the point.””

“It’s a yes or no question.””

Claire sat up straighter.

“Daniel, I understand you’re upset.””

“No. Answer me.””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Did Noah throw her backpack?””

“No.””

“Did Noah tell her she didn’t belong?””

Her silence answered.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then why are we talking about Noah?””

Claire’s face tightened.

“Because he’s manipulating you.””

“He’s twelve.””

“He’s old enough to understand consequences.””

“He’s old enough to protect his sister.””

The words hit her.

For a second, Claire looked genuinely angry.

Then she controlled it.

“You’re taking their side against me.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why does everything become sides with you?””

She frowned.

“What?””

“Why is it always someone versus you?””

Claire stood.

“Because everyone is attacking me.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was calm.

“That’s what I’m trying to understand.””

She looked hurt.

“You don’t trust me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was worse than saying yes.

Claire’s eyes became wet.

“After everything I’ve done for this family?””

Daniel looked around the room.

The expensive furniture.

The perfect decorations.

The picture frames.

Everything looked beautiful.

But suddenly, none of it felt warm.

“What exactly have you done?””

The question surprised her.

“What?””

“For Lily.””

Claire stared.

“I take care of her.””

“Give me an example.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then:

“I cook.””

“You have a chef.””

“I help with school.””

“You hired a tutor.””

“I’m trying to be her mother.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No one asked you to replace her mother.””

The room went still.

Claire’s face changed.

“You think that’s what this is about?””

“I don’t know what this is about anymore.””

That was the first honest answer he had given her.

And she knew it.

Later that evening, Noah sat with Lily at the kitchen table.

The chair had been returned.

The pink backpack sat beside her.

But something felt different.

Like the house itself was waiting.

“Do you think she’s leaving?”” Lily asked.

Noah looked at her.

“Who?””

“Claire.””

He didn’t know what to say.

“I don’t know.””

“Would Daddy be happier?””

Noah looked down.

That was not a question a child should have to ask.

“Lily.””

“Yeah?””

“You don’t have to make yourself smaller so other people can be happy.””

She was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Did Mommy ever feel like this?””

Noah swallowed.

“No.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Mommy made everyone feel like they belonged.””

Lily smiled faintly.

“I miss her.””

“Me too.””

For a few minutes, they sat there in silence.

Then Noah noticed something.

The security panel near the kitchen door.

A small green light was blinking.

He stood.

“What?””

He walked closer.

“What is it?”” Lily asked.

Noah didn’t answer.

Because the screen showed something impossible.

A new device had connected to the home security system.

Not Marcus.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

A device that wasn’t registered.

A device currently viewing their cameras.

Noah called his father immediately.

Daniel came running.

“What happened?””

Noah pointed at the screen.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Someone is watching us.””

Then the system made another sound.

A notification appeared.

A live camera feed had been opened.

From inside the house.

Daniel looked at the screen.

The camera location appeared.

And his blood turned cold.

Because the camera being accessed was not outside.

May you like

It was upstairs.

In Lily’s bedroom.
