Chapter 5: The Camera Nobody Knew About
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The screen continued blinking.
A small red icon pulsed in the corner.
*LIVE VIEWING ACTIVE.*
Someone was watching.
Not from outside.
Not from the street.
From inside their own house.
Daniel felt the room become smaller.
His eyes stayed locked on the monitor.
“The camera in Lily’s room,” he whispered.
Noah stood beside him.
“How is that possible?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he already knew the worst part.
He never installed a camera in Lily’s bedroom.
Not one he knew about.
He reached for the keyboard and checked the security map again.
Every official camera was listed.
Front door.
Backyard.
Kitchen.
Hallway.
Garage.
But there was another device.
A hidden device.
One that had never appeared before.
Daniel clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then a grainy image appeared.
Lily’s bedroom.
Her bed.
Her bookshelf.
Her stuffed animals lined against the wall.
The room where she slept.
The room where she changed clothes.
The room where she was supposed to feel safe.
Noah immediately stepped in front of Lily.
“Turn it off.””
Daniel’s fingers hovered over the keyboard.
“I’m trying.””
The camera feed moved.
Slowly.
Like someone on the other side was adjusting it.
Then the view shifted toward the bedroom door.
Daniel froze.
Because the camera was not hidden somewhere random.
It was positioned perfectly.
Facing the entire room.
Whoever installed it knew exactly where to place it.
“Dad…”
Noah’s voice was quiet.
“Who would do this?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Because the answer was already forming.
And he hated it.
The first thing Daniel did was check the security access history.
The second thing he did was call the security company.
The third thing he did was tell Claire to come downstairs.
She appeared five minutes later.
Still wearing her silk robe.
Still looking confused.
“What happened?””
Daniel turned the monitor toward her.
Her face changed.
Only for a moment.
But Noah saw it.
A flicker.
A flash of recognition.
Then it disappeared.
“What is that?”” Claire asked.
Daniel watched her carefully.
“You tell me.””
She looked offended.
“Why would I know?””
“Because it’s in our house.””
“And?””
“And someone installed it.””
Claire crossed her arms.
“Are you accusing me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That made her angrier.
“Daniel.””
“I asked a question.””
“No, you didn’t. You’re looking at me like I’m a criminal.””
Noah watched her closely.
Claire was good.
Very good.
She knew how to turn suspicion into sympathy.
But this time, Daniel didn’t move.
“Did you know there was a camera in Lily’s room?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Daniel noticed.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“Because this camera has been connected for weeks.””
Claire looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel turned the screen.
“The system says it was installed three weeks ago.””
Three weeks.
Noah counted silently.
Three weeks ago.
That was around the time Lily first started asking if she could sleep with her bedroom light on.
The time she stopped wanting to play alone upstairs.
The time she started saying:
“Someone is watching.””
Everyone thought she was imagining things.
Noah felt sick.
“Dad.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“Lily told me something before.””
Claire looked toward him.
“What?””
Noah ignored her.
“She said she felt like someone was watching her.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Noah looked down.
“Because I thought…”
He stopped.
Daniel softened.
“What?””
“I thought nobody would believe her.””
The sentence hit harder than any accusation.
Daniel looked at Lily.
His daughter stood quietly near the doorway.
Hearing everything.
Learning everything.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Lily.””
She looked up.
“Did you know about the camera?””
Her eyes widened.
“What camera?””
Daniel crouched.
“The one in your room.””
Lily looked terrified.
“No.””
“Did anyone ever come into your room when you weren’t home?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation made everyone notice.
“Lily?””
She hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“Sometimes.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Think carefully.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Sometimes when I came home from school, things were moved.””
“What things?””
“My books.””
“Anything else?””
“My toys.””
Noah stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Lily looked embarrassed.
“Because I thought maybe I did it.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
A child had been living with fear and blaming herself.
The security company arrived forty minutes later.
A technician named Robert inspected the system.
He was quiet as he worked.
Too quiet.
Finally, Daniel asked:
“Can you tell us what happened?””
Robert removed a small device from behind the security panel.
“This wasn’t installed by your security provider.””
Daniel stared.
“Then who installed it?””
Robert examined the device.
“It’s professionally hidden.””
“Meaning?””
“Meaning whoever did this knew what they were doing.””
Claire sighed.
“This is insane.””
Robert looked at her.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but this isn’t a misunderstanding.””
He pointed at the device.
“This was designed to avoid detection.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“How long was it recording?””
Robert checked.
“Almost a month.””
Noah felt a chill.
A month.
A month of someone watching Lily.
A month of someone listening.
A month of someone knowing what happened inside their home.
Daniel looked furious.
“Can you identify who accessed it?””
Robert nodded.
“Possibly.””
He connected a cable.
A list appeared.
Multiple access attempts.
Daniel leaned closer.
Then froze.
“What?””
Robert looked up.
“There’s one account that appears repeatedly.””
“Whose?””
Robert read the name.
“Claire Anderson.””
The room went silent.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Claire.””
“No, Daniel, absolutely not.””
Robert frowned.
“The account was used to view the camera.””
“When?””
Robert checked.
“Several times.””
“When was the last time?””
He looked at the screen.
“This morning.””
Noah felt his stomach drop.
This morning.
Before the kitchen argument.
Before Daniel came home.
Before Claire acted surprised.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Why were you watching Lily’s room?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wasn’t.””
“The system says you were.””
“Someone used my account.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“You expect me to believe someone hacked your account, changed my security password, installed a hidden camera, and then used your identity?””
Claire looked hurt.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
But this time, nobody believed it.
Later that night, after the technician left, Daniel sat alone in his office.
Noah stood outside the door.
He heard his father on the phone.
“Marcus, I need answers.””
A pause.
Then:
“No, don’t tell me to calm down.””
Another pause.
“No. I found something.””
Noah moved closer.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You knew about the camera.””
Noah froze.
Inside the office, silence.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“Don’t lie to me.””
A long pause.
“You helped her.””
Noah’s heart started beating faster.
He opened the door slightly.
Daniel was standing behind his desk, phone pressed against his ear.
His face looked broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
“Why would you do that?””
Noah couldn’t hear Marcus’s answer.
But whatever it was, it changed Daniel’s expression.
Then Daniel said something that made Noah stop breathing.
“Wait.””
A pause.
“Are you saying Claire didn’t install the camera?””
Noah stepped closer.
Daniel looked toward the door.
He saw Noah.
For a moment, father and son stared at each other.
Then Daniel turned back to the phone.
“Marcus…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Who did you help get access to my house?””
The call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Noah entered.
“What happened?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked at his son.
And for the first time, Noah saw fear in his father’s eyes.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing his marriage.
Fear of someone they knew.
Someone close.
“Your uncle says Claire didn’t put the camera there.””
Noah frowned.
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at the security screen.
At the list of access records.
At the name that appeared beside the first installation request.
A name neither of them expected.
A name that made the entire situation much darker.

Because the person who placed the camera in Lily’s room…
was someone Lily trusted.
