Chapter 8: My Mother's Final Bargain

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

My mother stood beneath the warehouse light, her red coat perfectly buttoned, her diamond necklace resting against her collar.

The gun in her hand looked almost absurd.

This was the woman who used to cut my pancakes into little squares.

The woman who kissed my forehead before school.

The woman who had taught me to ride a bicycle.

And now she was pointing a weapon at her own children.

"Put it down, Mom.""

My voice sounded strangely calm.

Evelyn shook her head.

"Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.""

Daniel moved slightly to my left.

She immediately raised the gun.

"Don't.""

Daniel stopped.

Andre was trembling.

"Mom, what are you doing?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Cleaning up another mess you created.""

"You told me Dad was already dead.""

"And you believed me.""

Her voice was cold.

"You've always been disappointingly easy to manipulate.""

Andre looked as though she'd slapped him.

I stepped forward.

"Mom, listen to me. The police know about the documents. They know about the transfers. They know what happened to Nia.""

Evelyn laughed.

"The police know what you told them. That's not the same thing.""

She turned toward Daniel.

"And you. After everything I did for you, this is how you repay me?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You abandoned me.""

"I gave you a better life.""

"You gave me away.""

"You were an inconvenience.""

The words landed like a slap.

Daniel looked down.

For the first time, I understood why he'd agreed to work with her.

He wasn't simply greedy.

He had spent his entire life wanting the approval of a woman who had never intended to give it.

My mother took another step forward.

"Give me the paper, Marcus.""

"No.""

"Don't be foolish.""

"You killed Dad.""

Her expression changed.

Then she laughed softly.

"Your father was a stubborn man.""

"Did you push him?""

She didn't answer.

"Did you hit him?""

Evelyn looked at the gun.

"He refused to listen.""

My stomach turned.

"What did you do?""

She looked at me.

"He discovered the original trust. He wanted to give everything to Emily and Daniel. He wanted to leave me with nothing.""

"He was protecting his children.""

"He was destroying my life!""

Her voice rose.

"Do you know what I sacrificed for that family? Do you know what I gave up to build the Sterling name?""

I shook my head.

"You gave up your children.""

Her eyes flashed.

"Your father made me do that.""

"Nobody made you abandon them.""

"Your father was obsessed with his precious inheritance. He believed every child deserved a share of his money.""

Daniel spoke quietly.

"He believed every child deserved a mother.""

For a moment, Evelyn looked at him.

Then she pointed the gun directly at his chest.

"Don't lecture me.""

I moved between them.

"Stop.""

My mother turned the weapon toward me.

"Move, Marcus.""

"No.""

She took a breath.

"You have no idea what I did to keep this family together.""

I stared at her.

"Then tell me.""

She laughed.

"You want the truth? Fine.""

She began walking slowly around the workbench.

"Your father found out about Emily first. He discovered that I'd changed the adoption records and redirected her inheritance. He threatened to divorce me and expose everything.""

"And Daniel?""

"He came looking for money. Your father welcomed him. He wanted to make him part of the family.""

"What's wrong with that?""

"Because your father was going to give him the company!""

Her voice cracked.

"He was going to take everything from you and hand it to a stranger!""

I looked at Daniel.

"He isn't a stranger. He's your son.""

Evelyn's expression twisted.

"He was a mistake.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt something inside me harden.

"And Sofia?""

My mother looked at me.

"What about her?""

"Why were you trying to take my daughter?""

"Because she was the only way to preserve the family.""

"By taking her mother away?""

"Nia was poisoning her against us.""

"She was protecting her!""

Evelyn's eyes filled with angry tears.

"Your wife destroyed everything.""

I shook my head.

"No. You did.""

For a moment, she looked almost confused.

Then she pointed the gun toward the evidence sleeve.

"Give me the document.""

I slowly lifted it.

"Take it.""

She reached forward.

I dropped it.

The paper landed near her shoes.

As she bent down, Daniel moved.

He grabbed her wrist.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the warehouse.

I ducked behind the workbench.

Andre shouted.

Daniel stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder.

My mother tried to pull away, but he held on.

The gun fell to the concrete.

I kicked it beneath a metal shelf.

"Daniel!""

He collapsed against the workbench.

Blood spread across his shirt.

I rushed toward him.

"Stay with me!""

He pressed a hand against his shoulder.

"I'm fine.""

He wasn't.

My mother was screaming.

"You ungrateful little—"

Before she could finish, two police officers rushed into the warehouse.

"DROP YOUR HANDS!""

Evelyn froze.

Another officer restrained her.

Within seconds, she was on the floor in handcuffs.

She looked at me as they lifted her.

"Marcus, tell them this is a misunderstanding.""

I stared at her.

"You locked my wife in a shed.""

"She was unstable!""

"You tried to steal my company.""

"I was protecting it!""

"You forged my medical records.""

"I did what was necessary!""

"And Dad?""

Her mouth closed.

I stepped closer.

"Did you kill him?""

She looked at me.

For a moment, the mask slipped.

Then she whispered:

"He should have stayed out of my way.""

The officer immediately turned toward her.

"Ma'am, don't say another word.""

But it was too late.

I'd heard enough.

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

Daniel was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

Andre was separated from everyone and questioned.

My mother was taken into custody.

As I watched the police car disappear into the snowy night, my phone rang.

Nia.

I answered immediately.

"Baby?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Marcus, where are you?""

"I'm okay.""

"Did you find Andre?""

"Yes. We found Daniel too.""

There was a pause.

"Is he your brother?""

"Yes.""

Nia began crying.

"Oh, Marcus.""

I leaned against the warehouse wall.

"It's over.""

"No," she whispered.

"What?""

"Someone just came to the hospital asking for Sofia.""

My blood turned cold.

"Who?""

"I don't know. He showed the receptionist a document saying he had temporary authority over her.""

I straightened.

"Where is Sofia?""

"She's with me. The nurses locked the room.""

"Don't let anyone inside.""

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

"The man showed me a photograph.""

"What photograph?""

Nia's voice broke.

"It was a picture of Sofia and your mother. Taken yesterday.""

I felt sick.

"How is that possible?""

"I don't know.""

Then she whispered:

"Marcus, the document has your signature.""

I closed my eyes.

Another forged document.

Another attempt to take my daughter.

But this time, the name at the bottom wasn't Evelyn's.

It was Daniel Hayes.

I looked toward the ambulance carrying my newly discovered brother.

The man who had just risked his life to stop our mother.

And now his name was on the document threatening my child.

I called the hospital.

Before anyone could answer, Nia spoke again.

"Marcus, the man who brought the document is still here.""

"What's he doing?""

"He's asking to see me.""

"Don't speak to him.""

A man's voice interrupted in the background.

"Mrs. Sterling, I think you should hear this.""

Nia went silent.

Then she whispered:

"Marcus, he says he's your father's attorney.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"What's his name?""

She read the name printed on the document.

"Richard Hayes.""

My heart stopped.

Daniel's surname.

I turned toward the police officers.

"There's another person involved.""

And somewhere inside the hospital, a man who claimed to represent my dead father was trying to get access to my daughter.

Twenty minutes later, I arrived at the hospital.

Two officers accompanied me.

Nia was sitting beside Sofia's bed.

My daughter was awake, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

A gray-haired man stood near the doorway.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather briefcase.

"Mr. Sterling," he said.

I stepped between him and my family.

"Who are you?""

"Richard Hayes. I represented your father in several private legal matters.""

"Show me your identification.""

He produced a card.

I examined it.

It looked legitimate.

"Why are you trying to take my daughter?""

He sighed.

"Nobody is trying to take her. I was instructed to deliver a document concerning her legal guardianship.""

"By whom?""

He opened his briefcase.

"By your father.""

I stared at him.

"My father has been dead for six years.""

"Yes. But he left instructions that were never supposed to be opened until a specific event occurred.""

"What event?""

The lawyer looked at Nia.

"Your wife being confined against her will. Your mother attempting to assume control of the company. And the discovery of the original family trust.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"You're saying Dad predicted all of this?""

"Not exactly. He anticipated it.""

He removed a sealed envelope.

It bore my father's handwriting.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

Marcus, if Evelyn has finally been stopped, you must find the woman who raised Daniel.

I looked up.

"What woman?""

Richard Hayes closed his briefcase.

"The woman who adopted your older brother.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

He looked directly at me.

"Because she has been protecting someone for twenty-eight years.""

"Who?""

He glanced toward Sofia.

Then he answered.

"Your father's biological son.""

I stared at him.

"Daniel is my father's son.""

Richard shook his head.

"Daniel Hayes is your half-brother. But he isn't the child your father was most desperate to find.""

He reached into his briefcase again.

This time, he removed an old photograph.

It showed my father holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a date.

The day before my mother claimed to have given birth to me.

And underneath it, in my father's handwriting, were four words:

*THE CHILD THEY SWITCHED.*
