Chapter 7: The Paper My Father Died Holding
I read Andre's message three times.
*COME TO THE OLD STERLING WAREHOUSE TONIGHT. COME ALONE. I HAVE THE PAPER YOUR FATHER WAS HOLDING WHEN HE DIED.*
The photograph beneath it showed a torn piece of paper stained with something dark brown.
My father's signature was visible at the bottom.
I enlarged the image.
There was a sentence above the signature.
I acknowledge that Evelyn Sterling has no legal authority over the original family trust or its beneficiaries.
I looked at Nia.
"Andre has the document.""
She immediately shook her head.
"Don't go.""
"I need to know what happened to my father.""
"Then take the police.""
"He specifically said to come alone.""
"Marcus, that's exactly why you shouldn't go.""
She reached for my hand.
"Your brother has been lying to you for years. Your mother locked me in a shed. They've already tried to take Sofia. What makes you think this meeting will be any different?""
I couldn't answer.
Because I knew she was right.
But I also knew Andre was the only person who might finally tell me what happened that night.
I called the investigating officer.
I showed him the message and the photograph.
He agreed to arrange surveillance around the warehouse, but warned me not to approach Andre without the officers' support.
Before leaving, I kissed Nia's forehead.
"I'll be back.""
She caught my hand.
"Marcus.""
I turned.
"Don't let him make you feel guilty for surviving.""
I frowned.
"What?""
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Your father was protecting you. Whatever happened that night, don't let them turn his sacrifice into another weapon against you.""
I kissed her again.
Then I left.
The old Sterling warehouse stood near the industrial district where my father had started his first business.
Most of the building was abandoned.
The loading bay doors were rusted, and weeds had grown through the cracks in the concrete.
A single light burned inside.
I parked several streets away.
The officers were positioned nearby, waiting for my signal.
I walked through the side entrance.
"Andre?""
My voice echoed.
A metal door slammed somewhere behind me.
Then my brother appeared.
He was wearing the same black jacket he'd worn at the house.
His eyes were red.
"You're late.""
"Where's the document?""
Andre held up a small plastic evidence sleeve.
Inside was the bloodstained paper.
I reached for it.
He pulled it away.
"Not so fast.""
"What do you want?""
He laughed bitterly.
"That's always been your problem, Marcus. You think everything belongs to you.""
I stared at him.
"My father built this company.""
"And I worked for him!""
"Until he fired you for stealing.""
Andre's expression twisted.
"He fired me because he found out about the money.""
"What money?""
He looked at the paper.
"Two million dollars. I transferred it out of the company. Mom told me it was temporary. She said we'd put it back before Dad noticed.""
"But he noticed.""
"Yes.""
"And that's why you forged the documents?""
Andre shook his head.
"Not at first. Mom said Dad was getting confused. She said he was making terrible decisions and needed someone to protect the family.""
I stepped closer.
"You're thirty-four years old. Stop hiding behind Mom.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"You think I wanted any of this?""
"You had a choice.""
"I had debts!""
"So you helped them steal?""
Andre slammed the plastic sleeve against a workbench.
"I owed money to people who don't accept excuses!""
I stared at him.
He continued.
"Mom promised she'd fix everything. She said once you were declared incompetent, the company would be under her control. We'd sell some assets, repay the debts, and start over.""
"And Nia?""
His jaw tightened.
"She found the transfers.""
"So you locked her in the shed?""
"No!""
He shouted so loudly that his voice echoed through the warehouse.
"Mom did that. I told her not to hurt Nia.""
"But you didn't stop her.""
Andre looked away.
I felt disgust rising inside me.
"You stood there while my wife froze.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"I know.""
"You watched my daughter cry.""
"I know!""
"Then why?""
Andre looked directly at me.
"Because I was afraid Mom would turn on me next.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I reached for the evidence sleeve again.
"Give me the document.""
Andre finally handed it over.
I examined the paper.
It was part of a longer statement.
The text above my father's signature read:
I have discovered that the first family trust was unlawfully altered following the birth of my daughter, Emily. I further acknowledge that the disappearance of the original beneficiary records was authorized by Evelyn Sterling.
Beneath it was another sentence.
The second child, whose identity remains protected, must never be placed under her mother's control.
I looked up.
"What second child?""
Andre's face changed.
"You don't know?""
"Know what?""
He took a step backward.
"Marcus, you need to sit down.""
"Tell me.""
Andre swallowed.
"The second child wasn't Vanessa's daughter.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who?""
He looked at me.
"You.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
Andre nodded.
"Mom had another child before you. A boy. She gave him up shortly after birth.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"Your father found out years later.""
"Who was he?""
Andre looked toward the dark end of the warehouse.
"Your older brother.""
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
"Does he know about us?""
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
Andre reached into his jacket and removed a folded photograph.
He handed it to me.
It showed a young man standing beside my father.
The photograph was old, probably taken more than twenty years earlier.
The young man had dark hair, a strong jaw, and the same small scar above his left eyebrow that I had.
I touched the photograph.
"Who is this?""
Andre whispered:
"Daniel Hayes.""
I looked at him.
The name from the trust agreement.
The trustee.
The man my mother had supposedly hired to control the company.
The same man who had threatened Nia.
My older brother.
"Does he know what Mom did?""
Andre nodded.
"He knows everything.""
"Then why is he helping her?""
"Because she promised him the inheritance she stole from him.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Where is he now?""
Andre looked at the warehouse entrance.
"He's coming.""
I turned.
A pair of headlights swept across the dusty windows.
A black SUV pulled into the loading bay.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
He looked older than the photograph, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
He walked toward us without hurrying.
"Marcus," he said.
I couldn't move.
He looked at Andre.
"Did you give him the paper?""
Andre nodded.
Daniel turned toward me.
"Good. Then we can finally stop pretending.""
I held up the photograph.
"Are you my brother?""
He smiled without warmth.
"Technically.""
"Why are you helping our mother?""
His expression hardened.
"Because Evelyn promised me something your father stole from me.""
"Your inheritance?""
"My identity.""
I frowned.
Daniel pulled a document from his coat.
"My birth certificate. The original one.""
He placed it on the workbench.
It listed Evelyn Sterling as his mother.
Robert Sterling as his father.
And Daniel Robert Sterling as his birth name.
I stared at the paper.
My mother had given him up.
Then spent years pretending he didn't exist.
"Why did you become Daniel Hayes?""
"Because your mother made sure I grew up believing my parents didn't want me.""
His voice was calm, but his hands trembled.
"When I found her, she told me my father had abandoned me and that you had stolen everything I should have inherited.""
"That's not true.""
"I know that now.""
He looked toward the photograph of my father.
"Your father found me two years before he died. He wanted to make things right.""
"What happened?""
Daniel looked at Andre.
"Ask him.""
Andre's face went pale.
I turned.
"What did you do?""
Andre began shaking his head.
"I didn't mean for it to happen.""
"Tell me.""
"That night, Dad found the original trust documents. He called Mom and told her he was going to the police.""
Daniel interrupted.
"And then?""
Andre looked at the floor.
"Mom called me. She said Dad was having another episode. She told me to go to the house and calm him down.""
"Did you attack him?""
"No!""
Andre's voice broke.
"I got there after the argument.""
"Then what happened?""
He wiped his face.
"Dad was on the floor. Mom was standing over him. There was blood on her sleeve.""
My heart stopped.
"What did you do?""
"I panicked.""
"Did you call an ambulance?""
Andre shook his head.
Instead, he told me he helped my mother move the papers, clean the room, and remove the document from my father's hand.
"Why didn't you call for help?""
Andre looked at me.
"Because Mom told me Dad was already dead.""
I felt sick.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Your brother helped conceal what happened. But he didn't kill your father.""
I turned toward him.
"Then who did?""
Daniel's eyes moved toward the warehouse entrance.
A woman stood in the doorway.
My mother.
Evelyn was holding a small black handbag.
She looked at all three of us.
Then she smiled.
"Well," she said quietly.
"Since everyone is finally together, perhaps it's time we discuss the truth.""
May you like
She reached into her handbag.
And pulled out a gun.
