Chapter 15 - EVERYTHING FALLS APART

That evening… Margaret called us.

She did not speak to Daniel. She asked for me.

“I want to meet,” she said. Her voice was low. Rough. Defeated. “Alone. Tomorrow morning. Before court.”

“Why?” I asked. “So you can threaten me again? So you can try to buy me off?”

“I want to settle,” Margaret said. “Before it gets worse. Before… everything comes out.”

I hesitated.

“Come alone,” she said. “Or I walk away. And you will never know the whole truth.”

I agreed.

The next morning… I met her at a small park. Far from the courthouse.

Margaret sat on a bench. She looked older. Frail. The power was gone.

She watched me approach.

“You brought no lawyers,” she said.

“I brought no one,” I said. “Just you. And me.”

I sat down on the opposite end of the bench.

“Say what you came to say.”

Margaret stared at the ground.

“I will agree to the divorce,” she said. “And I will transfer all property rights to you and Daniel. I will drop all lawsuits. I will never attempt to contact you. Or Sophie. Or Daniel. Ever again.”

She looked up. Her eyes were wet.

“In exchange… you drop the investigation into my husband’s death. You do not use Elena’s testimony. You do not pursue criminal charges. And you let me leave. Quietly.”

I stared at her.

“You are admitting it,” I said quietly. “Something happened to him.”

Margaret closed her eyes. She did not answer.

“Tell me,” I said. “Tell me the truth. And maybe… I will consider it.”

Margaret sat in silence for a long time. A breeze moved through the trees.

“He had changed his will,” she said finally. Her voice was barely audible. “He was going to leave everything to Robert. And to Daniel. And to you. He was going to cut me out completely.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I confronted him. I begged him not to. We argued. I told him what I would do. And then… he had a medical event. Right there. In front of me. I did not… I did not kill him. But I did not help him either. I waited. Until it was too late.”

She looked at me. Tears streaming down her face.

“I let him die. Because I was afraid. Because I wanted the power. Because I believed I deserved it more than anyone else.”

Margaret bowed her head.

“That is the truth. I did not strike him. I did not poison him. But I let him die. And then I covered it up. And I have lived with it every single day since.”

Silence stretched out. Long and heavy.

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

“Because I am tired,” Margaret said. “I am tired of running. Tired of fighting. Tired of being the monster in your story.”

She looked up at me.

“Take the deal. Take everything. And let me go. Or… drag me through the mud. Put me on trial. And destroy Daniel in the process. Because when the world learns what his mother did… it will destroy him too. Is that what you want? To punish her… or to protect your family?”

I stood up. My mind racing.

May you like

Margaret watched me.

“Choose wisely,” she said quietly. “You can have peace. Or you can have justice. But you cannot have both.”
