Chapter 14 - THE FINAL STAND

The trial began.

Margaret sat at the defendant’s table. Surrounded by lawyers. Confident. Composed. She looked every inch the respectable matriarch.

But I saw something new in her eyes. Fear.

She knew Elena was coming.

Margaret’s lawyers spoke first. They attacked Daniel’s character. They accused me of manipulating him. They called Robert — who recanted his earlier statement and claimed he had given me the notebook without reading it, saying he had only wanted to help me and had no idea what was inside.

Margaret smiled. She looked at us. Victorious.

Then it was our turn.

Daniel testified first. He spoke clearly. Calmly. He told the judge about the original deed. About the clause Margaret had forced him to add. About Christmas night. About the threats.

Margaret’s lawyer cross-examined him aggressively. He called him weak. Confused. Under my control.

Daniel stood firm.

“I was weak,” he admitted. “For years. I let my mother control me. I let her hurt people I loved. But I am not weak anymore. And I will not let her hurt anyone else.”

Then we called the handwriting expert. He confirmed the notebook was written by Daniel’s father. That every word was authentic. That Margaret’s claims of forgery were false.

Margaret’s lawyers argued. They objected. They tried to cast doubt. But the evidence was clear.

And then… we called Elena.

The courtroom went silent.

Elena walked in. Quiet. Professional. She carried a thick folder.

Margaret stood up. Her face twisted with rage.

“You cannot put her on the stand!” she shouted. “She was fired! She is bitter! She is lying!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Hale,” the judge ordered. “Or I will have you removed.”

Margaret sat down. But her eyes never left Elena.

Elena testified. She told the court about the last months of Daniel’s father’s life. About his health. About his fears. About the arguments.

And then… she told the court what she had heard that final night.

Margaret’s voice. Clear and cold.

“If you will not give it to me willingly… I will take it. And no one will ever know.”

When Elena finished speaking… the courtroom was silent.

She laid the medical records on the stand.

“These show he was healthy,” Elena said. “There was no medical reason for him to die that night. Not unless… something was done to him.”

Margaret’s lawyers objected. They shouted. They accused Elena of fabrication. But Elena stood firm. She answered every question. She produced every document. She remained calm. Professional. Unshakable.

When Elena stepped down… Margaret looked at her. And for the first time… I saw true terror in her eyes.

She knew.

The game was ending.
