Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST RETURNS

The trial date approached.

Without Robert’s testimony… our case was fragile. Margaret had successfully silenced him. And she knew it.

She sent us one final offer. Delivered by courier on the morning before the trial.

“Walk away. Leave the house. Leave the state. And I will not pursue criminal charges against you. Refuse… and you will lose everything.”

Daniel read the note. Then he tore it into pieces.

“Tell her no,” he said. “And tell her… we will see her in court.”

But as we prepared for the trial… I kept thinking about Robert. About his fear. About Margaret’s power.

And then… something happened. Something no one expected.

Two days before the trial… I received a phone call. From a woman I had never met.

“Mrs. Hale,” she said. “My name is Elena. I was your father-in-law’s nurse. For the last year of his life.”

My heart skipped.

“Why are you calling me?”

“Because I have been reading about the trial,” she said. “And I have been reading about the notebook. And Margaret Hale… she is lying. About everything.”

I gripped the phone.

“What do you know?”

There was a pause. A long, hesitant silence.

“I was there the night he died,” Elena said. “Margaret was there too. And I heard them arguing. I heard him threaten to expose her. To cut her off. To change his will.”

She took a breath.

“And then… I heard her say something. Something I have carried with me ever since.”

“What did she say?” I asked, barely breathing.

“She said… ‘If you will not give it to me willingly… I will take it. And no one will ever know.’”

My blood ran cold.

“I did not understand what she meant then,” Elena continued. “But hours later… he was dead. And the doctor signed the certificate without question. And Margaret paid me a bonus. And told me to take a vacation. And never speak of that night to anyone.”

“Why are you speaking now?” I asked.

“Because I have a daughter too,” Elena said. “And I cannot… I cannot let Margaret Hale threaten another child. Not when I know what she is truly capable of.”

She paused.

“I also kept his medical records. The real ones. Not the ones Margaret altered. They show he was healthy. That his heart was strong. That he should not have died that night.”

Tears stung my eyes.

“Margaret threatened you,” I said. “She could ruin you. Hurt you.”

“I know,” Elena said. “But some things are more important than fear. And the truth… it deserves to be heard.”

“Will you testify?” I asked. “Will you tell the court what you heard?”

Elena was quiet for a long time.

“Yes,” she said finally. “I will testify. And I will bring the records.”

I hung up the phone. My hands were shaking.

Daniel walked into the room. He saw my face.

“What is it?”

I told him. Everything.

When I finished… Daniel stood frozen. Pale. Silent.

“Elena,” he whispered. “I remember her. She was with him every day. He trusted her completely.”

He sat down slowly.

“If she testifies… and brings those records… everything changes.”

“Margaret will try to destroy her,” I said. “She will accuse her of lying. Of being paid. Of having an agenda.”

“Let her try,” Daniel said. “Because Elena is telling the truth. And Margaret… she knows it.”

He stood up. He walked to the window.

“Father knew,” he said quietly. “He knew what she was capable of. That is why he wrote everything down. That is why he kept the notebook. He knew she would destroy everything he loved. Unless someone stopped her.”

He turned to me.

“And now… someone finally has.”
